6.12. pam_issue - add issue file to user prompt
Yeah, but in elementaryOS Luna, the pam.d/login thing mentioned in the README.Debian doesn't work. You have to edit /etc/init/ttyX.conf, and add '-f /etc/issue.linuxlogo' to each "getty" invocation.

Windows Explorer Navigation Toolbar Button - Change - Windows 7 Help Forums
Note that the font size set with the Control Panel will affect which set of bitmaps get used for ExplorerFrame.dll. A lot of visual styles don't bundle the hi-res BMPs you'd need for the larger font size, so it'll look like the new buttons didn't take effect.

DockMod - Customize Your Mac OS X Dock
Kinda sketchy. Doesn't work for Mavericks (10.9.5). Does include an uninstaller script on the disk image, though, which appears to rip out all the kernel extensions, SIMBL plugins, launched profiles, and whatever else.

Install Mint Display Manager (MDM) In Ubuntu 12.04 ~ Web Upd8: Ubuntu / Linux blog
You can download more MDM themes from Gnome Look. To use a theme, you'll have to extract the downloaded archives because you'll have to make some changes:

rename the "GdmGreeterTheme.desktop" file to "MdmGreeterTheme.desktop"
open "MdmGreeterTheme.desktop" with a text editor and change "[GdmGreeterTheme]" to "[MdmGreeterTheme]"

Once you're done, archive the theme folder to .tar.gz and use the MDM Configuration Tool (mdmsetup) to install the new theme.

unity - How I turn off backlight around switcher icons - Ask Ubuntu
For 14.04, it's now /usr/share/unity/icons/launcher_icon_back_150.svg.
You can replace the background image for the launchers with a transparent one. In a terminal, run the following (this is for Ubuntu 12.04, in 11.10 you'd change the path to say 4 instead of 5):

Backup the original:

sudo cp /usr/share/unity/5/launcher_icon_back_150.png{,.back}

Edit the file:

gimp /usr/share/unity/5/launcher_icon_back_150.png

In GIMP, press Ctrl+A to select everything. Then Del to remove it. Hit Shift+Ctrl+S to save it as a new picture to, e.g., /home/launcher_icon_back_150.png, and finally press Ctrl+Q to quit.

Move the new image to the right place:

sudo mv /home/launcher_icon_back_150.png /usr/share/unity/5/

Log out and back in.

If you want to go back, simply run:

sudo mv /usr/share/unity/5/launcher_icon_back_150.png{.back,}

and log out and back in again.

Linux / GNU June 2010 Desktops - Neowin Forums
One thing most people probably don't know is that undecorating maximized windows (removing titlebar) is really easy to achieve with compiz (as mentioned above), just open compiz config setting manager, go to 'window decoration' and paste !(state=maxvert | maxhorz) to 'window decoration' field. Window Applets just do that for you automatically, plus they offer buttons and title in panel as a replacement for titlebar.
