What White People Really Mean When They Say #AllLivesMatter | Dame Magazine
Look Becky and Connor, I know it is hard outchere in these streets being White. People are wearing shirts, writing hashtags, and carrying signs anshit that don’t prioritize YOUR lives. Sure, White people are free of any of the dangers, threats or consequences of actually being Black, but I understand it is a struggle to live in a world where you’re not reminded every moment that you matter more than others.
Where was the #AllLivesMatter crowd when we were debating health care and other social-welfare programs on chopping block from the Republican Party? You were too busy talking about welfare queens, moochers, and parasites.

What the Supreme Court Says About Sitting Out the National Anthem - Rolling Stone
Other parts of the opinion are worth noting as well. The Court did not ignore the fact that the pledge incites deep emotions, especially during wartime (when the case was decided). To the justices, that just meant that the students' free speech rights mattered even more: "Freedom to differ is not limited to things that do not matter much. That would be a mere shadow of freedom. The test of its substance is the right to differ as to things that touch the heart of the existing order."

The Court also explained that true patriots welcome dissent and protest, even when it touches the flag. To the Court, true patriots recognize that the U.S. is strong enough to appeal to people on its own, without mandates from above: "To believe that patriotism will not flourish if patriotic ceremonies are voluntary and spontaneous, instead of a compulsory routine, is to make an unflattering estimate of the appeal of our institutions to free minds."

Trump’s Attack on the Press Shows Why Protests Are Necessary - The New Yorker
What was this all about? Trump has a tender ego, of course. Perhaps he was simply angry at the comparisons with his predecessor, and he lashed out, as he often does, then dispatched his spokesman to follow up. My own suspicion is that Trump and Spicer were trying to distract attention from the indisputably huge crowds turning out in Washington and many other places to protest against him. Spicer spoke at about 4:30 P.M., insuring that his bad-tempered remarks would compete for space with the protest marches on the evening news shows.

What did the dual outbursts say about the new President and his fledgling Administration? Surely that the mass protests were entirely justified. That Trump has brought his blatant disregard for the truth, and his calculated enmity toward the media, into the White House with him. That his spokesman will engage in Orwellian Newspeak when given the order. And that a protester’s sign I saw on Fifth Avenue that said, simply, “NOT NORMAL” was right on point.

CEO behind Dakota Access to protesters: ‘We’re building the pipeline’ | PBS NewsHour
Well, first of all, I think this is well-known by now. We’re not on any Indian property at all, no Native American property. We’re on private lands. That’s number one.

Number two, this pipeline is new steel pipe. We’re boring underneath Lake Oahe. It’s going to go 90 feet to 150 feet below the lake’s surface. It’s thick wall pipe, extra thick, by the way, more so than just the normal pipe that we lay.

Also, on each side of the lake, there’s automated valves that, if in the very, very unlikely situation there were to be a leak, our control room shuts down the pipe, encapsulates that small section that could be in peril.

So, that’s that’s just not going to happen. Number one, we’re not going to have a leak. I can’t promise that, of course, but that — no one would get on airplanes if they thought they were going to crash.

And, number two, there is no way there would be any crude contaminate their water supply. They’re 70 miles downstream.

Guy keeps talking about "the federal government" and "the people of North Dakota" like he has no idea that Indian reservations are sovereign nations of their own.

San Francisco Quarterback Colin Kaepernick Could Have Protested More Effectively - The Atlantic
I also admire the veterans who have defended him by arguing, correctly, that they are defending his right to sit or stand when the national anthem plays. That’s what living in a free country means.

Angry Native American Tribesman Confronts White American Protestors - Culture - Nairaland
A Native American man criticized protesters at an Arizona rally against illegal immigration, calling them the real “illegals” for invading his country and killing Native Americans when Europeans first settled on US soil.
“You’re all fuc.king illegal. You’re all illegal,” the Native American man yelled at the protesters, who had gathered in Tuscon, Arizona to demonstrate their opposition to illegal immigration by Central and South Americans. “We didn’t invite none of you here. We’re the only native Americans here.”
