Windows Vista: Security Through Endless Warning Dialogs
The problem with the Security Through Endless Warning Dialogs school of thought is that it doesn't work. All those earnest warning dialogs eventually blend together into a giant "click here to get work done" button that nobody bothers to read any more. The operating system cries wolf so much that when a real wolf-- in the form of a virus or malware-- rolls around, you'll mindlessly allow it access to whatever it wants, just out of habit.

Reduce the size of Vista's WinSxS Folder | Andrew Berry Development
Cleaning out the directory is pretty simple. Click the start menu, and in the search field type vsp1cln. A single result should show up. I have UAC disabled on my system, so if it's an issue run cmd first, and run the utility through that.

I started with a WinSxS folder of 10.9 GB. After running the cleaning tool, it dropped to 8.48 GB - nearly 2.5 GB! While this doesn't matter so much on desktops, it could make a big difference in virtual machines, or on laptops.

VirtualBox VMs and Windows Vista license keys
Odd thing: booting from a Vista DVD in VirtualBox, I get asked for a license key; then, after entering a presumably valid one, I get an error about some file on the setup drive being missing or corrup...

Open Save As dialog boxes display text in a foreign language
When you open an application, say WordPad and attempt to save a document, the Save As dialogs prompt are in a different language than English. Or, only an underline and question mark will be seen. (_________?)

This happens if the file MFC42LOC.DLL is present in the System32 folder. To resolve the problem, rename the file MFC42LOC.DLL present in the C:\Windows\System32 folder (for Windows 2000/XP systems) and C:\Windows\System (for Windows 9x systems)

The above applies to the following products:

Microsoft Paint
Microsoft WordPad
Microsoft Image Composer
Microsoft MapPoint 2000
Adobe PhotoDeluxe
Corel Photo-Paint

The dark side of IT: Unable to initialize windows sockets interface, error code 10107
The actual solution in my case was a System Restore (just prior to botched Windows updates).

The Invisible Things Lab's blog: Why do I miss Microsoft BitLocker?
The Static Root of Trust approach (also known as Static Root of Trust Measurement or SRTM) is pretty straightforward — the system starts booting from some immutable piece of firmware code that we assume is always trusted (hence the static root) and that initiates the measurement process, in which each component measures the next one in a chain. So, e.g. this immutable piece of firmware will first calculate the hash of the BIOS and extend a TPM's PCR register with the value of this hash. Then the BIOS does the same with the PCI EEPROMs and the MBR, before handling execution to them. Then the bootloader measures the OS loader before executing it. And so on.
