Configure Windows Software Update Services at Registry Guide for Windows
Open your registry and find or create the key below.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU]

Create a new DWORD value called "UseWUServer" and set it to "1" to use custom update servers or delete the value to use the default Internet site.

In my case, because the "corporate" WU server suddenly stopped responding one day, the solution was to *remove* said registry key.

Diagnosis: error messages like "Windows Update failed to check for updates with error 0x80072ee2." in the "WindowsUpdateClient\Operational" system log. (see also: http://www.ghacks.net/2010/01/24/fixing-windows-update-error-0x80072ee2/)

...and that registry key appeared *again* over a year later. The Group Policy setting was found under Computer Administration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Update -> Specify intranet Microsoft update service location. Setting this to "Not Configured" will hopefully solve the problem for good.
