The Making of a YouTube Radical - The New York Times
“There’s a spectrum on YouTube between the calm section — the Walter Cronkite, Carl Sagan part — and Crazytown, where the extreme stuff is,” said Tristan Harris, a former design ethicist at Google, YouTube’s parent company. “If I’m YouTube and I want you to watch more, I’m always going to steer you toward Crazytown.”

Like many Silicon Valley companies, YouTube is outwardly liberal in its corporate politics. It sponsors floats at L.G.B.T. pride parades and celebrates diverse creators, and its chief executive endorsed Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election. President Trump and other conservatives have claimed that YouTube and other social media networks are biased against right-wing views, and have used takedowns like those announced by YouTube on Wednesday as evidence for those claims.

In reality, YouTube has been a godsend for hyper-partisans on all sides. It has allowed them to bypass traditional gatekeepers and broadcast their views to mainstream audiences, and has helped once-obscure commentators build lucrative media businesses.

Minitube, YouTube app for Mac, Windows and Linux
You really *do* need to set up a Google API key for YouTube (v3):
Google is now requiring an API key in order to access YouTube Data web services. Create a "Browser Key" at and enable the Youtube Data API.

The key must be specified at compile time as shown below. Alternatively Minitube can read an API key from the GOOGLE_API_KEY environment variable.

Also, when building 2.9 from source (since 3.x is broken on Ubuntu 18.x and elementaryOS 5.0, Juno), you need a few more packages apart from those mentioned in the GitHub README:
<code class="language-bash">
sudo apt install libphonon-dev libphonon4qt5-dev

On YouTube Kids, Startling Videos Slip Past Filters - The New York Times []
Josh Golin, executive director of the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood, argued that inappropriate videos on YouTube Kids showed hazards of today’s media reality.

“Algorithms are not a substitute for human intervention, and when it comes to creating a safe environment for children, you need humans,” Mr. Golin said. His group and the Center for Digital Democracy filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission in 2015 accusing YouTube Kids of deceptive marketing to parents based on inappropriate videos.

Using automation for online advertising has turned Google into a behemoth worth more than half a trillion dollars. The company has faced a new wave of criticism in the past year for lacking human oversight after its systems inadvertently funded fake news sites and hateful YouTube videos and most likely sold election-related ads to accounts affiliated with the Russian government.

These 'Surprise Egg' Videos Are Making Kids Obsessed |
“It’s so mind-numbing,” C says. “She doesn’t laugh at it or talk about it, except when she’s asking to watch it. She just sits there, transfixed. Plus, there’s something about seeing your kid sitting still and watching a video of somebody playing with toys, instead of actually playing with toys themselves, that makes you feel like the victim of some awful irony of modern life.”

As I write this he has done a total of 4,426 videos and counting. With so many views — for comparison, Justin Bieber’s official channel has more than 10 billion views, while full-time YouTube celebrity PewDiePie has nearly 12 billion — it’s likely this man makes a living as a pair of gently murmuring hands that unwrap Kinder eggs. (Surprise-egg videos are all accompanied by pre-roll, and sometimes mid-video and ads.)

I wanted to know; by this point I was weirdly titillated at the idea of a real conversation with a man I’ve only heard repeat things like “Mickey Chocolate Egg” and “Fashems NumNoms” to distraction. But when I asked him for an interview, he said he wasn’t interested. I wish I could have asked him how much Kinder chocolate he has to throw away.

Something is wrong on the internet – James Bridle – Medium |
As another blogger notes, one of the traditional roles of branded content is that it is a trusted source. Whether it’s Peppa Pig on children’s TV or a Disney movie, whatever one’s feelings about the industrial model of entertainment production, they are carefully produced and monitored so that kids are essentially safe watching them, and can be trusted as such. This no longer applies when brand and content are disassociated by the platform, and so known and trusted content provides a seamless gateway to unverified and potentially harmful content.

(Yes, this is the exact same process as the delamination of trusted news media on Facebook feeds and in Google results that is currently wreaking such havoc on our cognitive and political systems and I am not going to explicitly explore that relationship further here, but it is obviously deeply significant.)
This is content production in the age of algorithmic discovery — even if you’re a human, you have to end up impersonating the machine.
The second is the levels of exploitation, not of children because they are children but of children because they are powerless. Automated reward systems like YouTube algorithms necessitate exploitation in the same way that capitalism necessitates exploitation, and if you’re someone who bristles at the second half of that equation then maybe this should be what convinces you of its truth. Exploitation is encoded into the systems we are building, making it harder to see, harder to think and explain, harder to counter and defend against. Not in a future of AI overlords and robots in the factories, but right here, now, on your screen, in your living room and in your pocket.

The video at the end ( is chilling, like an AI's nightmare after watching a million videos off of YouTube Kids.

Cheaper bandwidth or bust: How Google saved YouTube | Ars Technica
At this time, YouTube was too busy trying to keep up with growth to worry about its equally escalating piracy problem. In March 2006, though, a month after the NBC complaint, it finally started to fight back. New videos were limited to a 10-minute runtime, making it harder to upload full TV episodes and movies to the service. The community responded the way you'd expect: it broke pirated content into 10-minute chunks.

To further complicate things, Google claimed that "Viacom continuously and secretly uploaded its content to YouTube, even while publicly complaining about its presence there." According to Google, Viacom understood the value of YouTube for promotional purposes, but it still wanted to sue the site for copyright infringement. Google says the company "hired no fewer than 18 different marketing agencies to upload its content to the site. It deliberately 'roughed up' the videos to make them look stolen or leaked. It opened YouTube accounts using phony e-mail addresses. It even sent employees to Kinko's to upload clips from computers that couldn't be traced to Viacom."

▶ Female Mongolian Throat Singer - YouTube
ThePatriotess1 2 months ago
What a sad, limited, closed mind. I listen to Andrea Bocelli and realize that in Western culture he represents what we appreciate as beautiful. But if you listen to her sing, you can hear 50 thousand years of can hear a shaman's chant, a hunter's victory song, a mother's cry of pain as a new child enters the world, a lament for a dead warrior, and a love song. My son hears this and does not hear s*it, he hears beauty. Your song will never be heard, the price of bigotry.
