Red Dead Redemption 2 just broke a ton of records October 30, 2018 at 03:44PM https://ift.tt/2zjSp70

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a video game about robbing and fighting your way through the US’s Old West to survive—and it made a killing this weekend.

Developer Rockstar Games announced that Red Dead Redemption 2 (RDR2) generated over $725 million in worldwide sales, just three days after it launched on Friday (Oct. 26). That’s the biggest opening weekend in the history of entertainment. Variety points out that the game even beat Avengers: Infinity War, which has the highest-grossing opening weekend in film history—although at $59.99, RDR2 costs significantly more than a movie ticket. Still, the game’s success was enough to send the stock price ofRockstar’s Parent Company, Take-Two Interactive, up almost 12% on Tuesday (Oct. 30).

This also makes RDR2 the biggest entertainment launch of 2018. Earlier this year, Far Cry 5, developed by Ubisoft, was the top selling video game of 2018, which generated $310 million in its first week. Call of Duty: Black Ops IV beat that in October, generating $500 million within its first three days of sales, but RDR2 still beat them both handily.

And while Rockstar didn’t release exact numbers, the company claims that RDR2 is also the most pre-ordered game ever on the PlayStation Network (PSN), Sony’s online gaming service. In addition, Rockstar also notes that RDR2 generated the most sales on launch day on PSN ever. (Its near-flawless reviews are probably helping.)

However, the number one spot for the highest grossing entertainment launch goes to another Rockstar game: Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V), which racked up $1 billion in its first three days. GTA V was released on a Tuesday, however, leaving RDR2 to claim the biggest weekend opening to date. But while GTA V might currently be the highest-earning media title of all time, RDR2 is still gaining its fair share of accolades. And the game is just getting going: Rockstar plans to introduce an online multiplayer mode to RDR2, which it’ll being inviting people to test out in November. And if it’s anywhere near as popular as the online mode in GTA V, which is still played around the world even though it was released in 2013, Rockstar may have another long-lasting hit on its hands.

It’s not clear which MacBook laptop to buy anymore October 30, 2018 at 03:37PM https://ift.tt/2CRgg1h

Earlier today (Oct. 30), Apple released a new, confusingly named, MacBook Air. It rounds out the lineup of laptops that Apple has been releasing since 2015, with the launch of the MacBook.

But along with the 13-inch MacBook Pro that it released in 2016, Apple now has three laptop models that are roughly the same size, and all look pretty similar.

the new macbook air is good. what is not good is answering the question "what 13 inch laptop should i get" because there are now… *checks notes* eighteen base configurations pic.twitter.com/8CEwlBbvjx

— Owen Williams (@ow) October 30, 2018

To the average buyer who walks into an Apple store and sees these three machines next to each other, they’re likely not going to be sure which one is right for them. And it’s not entirely clear what the answer is:

Model

Starting Price

Screen size

Base memory

Base storage

Base Processor

Weight

MacBook Air

$1,199

13 inches

8 GB

128 GB

1.6 GHz

2.75 pounds

MacBook

$1,299

12 inches

8 GB

256 GB

1.2 GHz

2.03 pounds

MacBook Pro

$1,299

13 inches

8 GB

128 GB

2.3 GHz

3.02 pounds

There are some slight differences between the models: For example, the Air is the only one of the three to feature Apple’s TouchID fingerprint scanner, and the MacBook only has one USB port, while the others have two. But realistically, there isn’t much difference between the three devices.

Given that Apple hasn’t updated its MacBook since July 2017 (it refreshed the internals on the MacBook Pros this summer), it’s possible that it plans to phase the laptop out and return the Air to its rightful place as the company’s budget laptop. And given that it’s now charging $200 more for an Air than it was previously, there’s a case to be made that Apple’s entry-level laptop is now, in fact, the new $800 iPad Pro it also introduced today. It’s a lot easier to understand which iPad Pro to get, given that there’s only two of them.

Jay Z-backed Ethos raises $35 million to simplify access to life insurance - ImpactAlpha
Jay Z-backed Ethos raises $35 million to simplify access to life insurance October 30, 2018 at 03:27PM https://ift.tt/2CQMqde

ImpactAlpha, October 30 – The San Francisco insurance tech company raised its Series B round led by venture capital firm Accel. Prior investors, including Jay Z’s venture capital firm Arrive, GV (previously Google Venture), and Sequoia Capital, also backed the round. The firm also raised an undisclosed amount of debt capital from Silicon Valley Bank.

Ethos operates an online platform to sell life insurance policies by life insurance company Assurity Life. Unlike most life insurance policies, where policy holders have to pay premiums indefinitely, the policies available through Ethos are term-life policies, which means policy holders only have to pay for a fixed period of time. The policies Ethos offers are therefore less expensive.

Applicants using Ethos platform can also be approved online in as little as 10 minutes. Most applications don’t require follow up medical exams as many other life policies do.

The company has raised $46 million since launching in 2016, TechCrunch reports.

Salesforce Ventures, Lumina Foundation and Robin Hood partner for workforce development - ImpactAlpha
Salesforce Ventures, Lumina Foundation and Robin Hood partner for workforce development October 30, 2018 at 03:20PM https://ift.tt/2OgAmnU

ImpactAlpha, October 30 – Salesforce Impact Fund, Robin Hood and Lumina Foundation are each putting up $5 million to back companies supporting adults with job retraining, equitable compensation, and inclusive work environments. The partnership will also invest in companies helping adults complete high school, learn math and science skills, and access higher education.

The investment initiative marks New York-based nonprofit Robin Hood’s first foray into impact investing. “The fight against poverty needs every weapon in our arsenal,” Robin Hood’s Wes Moore said in a statement. The organization has 30 years of experience and has committed $120 million to fighting poverty in New York City through legal services, housing, meals, workforce development training and education programs.

Salesforce Ventures is making its commitment as part of its $50 million impact fund, which launched last October. The fund has already made a couple of education and workforce investments, including RaiseMe and Guild. The $5 million commitment to the partnership with Lumina and Robin Hood is earmarked for new investments.

Indianapolis-based Lumina Foundation has an established track record in edtech and workforce-based impact investments. The foundation, which has its own impact fund, has backed ventures like literacy and workforce skills startup Cell-Ed and analytics company Cevitas Learning, as well as other funds, like New Markets Venture Partners’ second edtech fund.

This clever Halloween tradition makes your clutter disappear October 30, 2018 at 03:09PM https://ift.tt/2SCgjUm

My brother-in-law and his family invented a simple, genius Halloween tradition: Every year, they collect “used but perfectly good” toys to add to the bowl they present to trick-and-treaters.

New Yorkers who are dedicated to living as minimally as possible, Scott Matthews and his wife came up with the system to offload toys that their 14-year-old daughter, Sasha, had outgrown. Costumed visitors can walk away with a candy bar, a bag of chips, or, say, a toy gyroscope for budding physicists.

Trick-or-treaters almost always prefer the toy. And they’re not fussy about taking home something that’s not brand new, as long as it’s clean. “By the end of the night, everything is always gone,” Scott says.

I’m the daughter! Everyone in our building fricken loves this tradition, and it’s a win/win. Highly recommended! https://t.co/2uEypLso5f

— Sasha Matthews (@RumbleComics) October 30, 2018

Sasha, a high school student in Manhattan and a prolific political comic artist, never regrets the giveaways. The tradition aligns nicely with her environmental and social activism: As she’ll point out, toys are a prime contributor to the world’s mountains and floating islands of waste. She’s also careful not to offer toys with any small pieces that could be choking hazards.

For her parents, it’s a “relatively guilt-free way to declutter,” says Scott, who takes some satisfaction in nudging children toward a game or hobby, instead of more sugar. Still, he says, “The only way to help the environment is not to consume this stuff to begin with.”

Lauren Groff is the latest literary star to write “cli-fi” October 30, 2018 at 03:09PM https://ift.tt/2zjOaIC

In a new piece of fiction from Lauren Groff, climate change and motherhood are as dreadful as a bedtime ghost story.

With “Warmer,” a collection of stories out today (Oct. 30) from Amazon Original Stories, she and six other writers add to a growing body of “cli-fi” stories, fiction about the impact of climate change. “Warmer” is only available digitally from the Amazon publishing imprint, and is free if you have Amazon Prime.

Courtesy Amazon Original Studios

In “Boca Raton,” the author of Fates and Furies depicts a single mother, Ange, who’s haunted by the specter of climate change. She faces nights of sleeplessness after discovering a nest of dead chicks who have been fed plastic from a creek by their mother. Ange moves through her days zombie-like, contemplating the hurricanes of her life.

“Warmer” also includes stories by Jess Walter, author of the novels The Zero and Beautiful Ruins; and Jane Smiley, author of A Thousand Acres and Private Life. Taken together, the stories feel a little heavy handed: They read almost like sponsored content for climate change activism, where the theme risks looming too large and explicit to reach people who don’t already believe in the effects of climate change. Still, fiction moves people in ways news and policy can’t.

Journalist Dan Bloom is credited with coining “cli-fi” (rhymes with sci-fi) around 2007, and Margaret Atwood tweeted about it in 2012. Her dystopian trilogy, which concluded in 2013’s MaddAddam, and Barbara Kingsolver’s 2012 Flight Behaviour, for example, contain cli-fi themes.

“So far, climate and post-apocalyptic fiction has been good at firing a warning shot about what might happen when everything falls apart,” Walter says by email, “Perhaps another thing fiction can attempt to do is render the massive as personal, to make the societal problem an individual concern.”

“Warmer” is a collaboration between Amazon Original Stories and the literary studio Plympton.

The FBI is investigating a right-wing plot to discredit Robert Mueller October 30, 2018 at 02:55PM https://ift.tt/2P3NBh6

The FBI has launched an investigation into an alleged plot to discredit special prosecutor Robert Mueller after a woman said she’d been offered money to falsely say that he’d sexually harassed her.

“When we learned last week of allegations that women were offered money to make false claims about the Special Counsel, we immediately referred the matter to the FBI for investigation,” said Peter Carr, spokesman for the special prosecutor’s office, which is investigating possible ties between Russian operatives and Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign.

Word of a scheme was brought to the attention of the special counsel’s office by “a woman claiming she herself had been offered money to make up sexual harassment claims against Mueller,” according to the Atlantic, which first reported the story. The Atlantic reports that the unnamed woman told “several journalists” she had been offered “roughly $20,000 by a GOP activist named Jack Burkman” to “make accusations of sexual misconduct and workplace harassment” against Mueller when she worked with him as a paralegal in the 1970s.

Perjury is a criminal offense in the US, as is obstruction of criminal investigations. Both charges could carry a five-year prison sentence.

A journalist who writes for New York magazine and Huffington Post tweeted a copy of a “tip” he got from a woman alleging a similar attempt.

13 days ago I received this tip alleging an attempt to pay off women to make up accusations of sexual misconduct against Special Counsel Bob Mueller. Other reporters received the same email. Now the Special Counsel's office is telling us they've referred the matter to the FBI pic.twitter.com/oqh4Fnel5u

— Yashar Ali (@yashar) October 30, 2018

Far-right commentators recently have been broadcasting that a Mueller story was coming soon. Burkman put up a video on his Facebook page last week claiming, without evidence, that Mueller had harassed women. Early yesterday, right-wing columnist Jacob Wohl told his 173,000 Twitter followers that a “scandalous story” about Mueller would be published soon:

Several media sources tell me that a scandalous story about Mueller is breaking tomorrow. Should be interesting. Stay tuned!

— Jacob Wohl (@JacobAWohl) October 30, 2018

Burkman previously alleged that Democratic national convention aide Seth Rich was murdered in 2016 as part of a political conspiracy. Rich’s parents unsuccessfully sued Fox News over its claim that Rich—who police believe was killed in a random robbery—had leaked information to Wikileaks.

The MacBook Air’s name no longer makes sense October 30, 2018 at 02:26PM https://ift.tt/2zf7jvs

At Apple’s press event in New York today (Oct. 30), the company unveiled a revamped MacBook Air, its first redesign of the laptop in years.

When the Air was first unveiled a decade ago, there were audible gasps in the audience when Apple founder Steve Jobs pulled the slim laptop out of a manila folder. It was a massive shift from the chunky laptops Apple had been producing up to that point—it was very light, fast, and affordable (at least by Apple’s standards). As current CEO Tim Cook said onstage today, it has inspired the design of all Apple laptops since.

But the Air had been neglected by Apple’s design team recently, as the company released new MacBook Pros, and a laptop called the MacBook in 2015, which many saw as the spiritual successor to the Air. Today’s redesign brings the Air into the same design language as its siblings, including an HD Retina display, a new wider keyboard and trackpad, and a TouchID fingerprint scanner.

But the new Air is a confusing one. It starts at $1,199—that’s $200 more than the old model, and only $100 less than the MacBook. It’s also not the lightest laptop Apple makes, as the name suggests: The Air weighs 2.75 pounds, whereas the MacBook weighs 2.03 pounds. (The Air also only weighs 0.27 pounds less than the MacBook Pro.)

The Air was traditionally Apple’s lightest laptop, and the only one that started at under $1,000. It is now no longer either of those things. Early indications suggest it’s going to be quite a decent laptop, but perhaps Apple should’ve thought about naming it something else.

Rose Hollister and Michael Watkins, consultants at Genesis Advisers, argue that many companies today are taking on too many initiatives. Each manager might have their own pet projects they want to focus on, but that trickles down to lower level workers dealing with more projects at a time that they can handle, or do well. This episode also offers practical tips for senior-level leaders to truly prioritize the best initiatives at their company — or risk losing some of their top talent. Notorious crime boss Whitey Bulger was reportedly found dead in a West Virginia prison October 30, 2018 at 01:22PM https://ift.tt/2PsM3fQ

James “Whitey” Bulger has been found dead in a West Virginia prison, NBC News reported, citing unnamed federal officials. Bulger, a notorious former Boston organized crime boss, was serving two life sentences for 11 murders. He was 89 years old.

Bulger began serving his sentence in 2014 at USP Coleman II, a high-security federal penitentiary in Sumterville, Florida. He was transferred during the past week to USP Hazelton in West Virginia, another high security facility with 1,277 inmates in the main prison and 108 in an adjacent satellite camp.

Authorities did not give a reason for the move. The Boston Globe recently reported that Bulger’s health “was deteriorating and [that]…his death appeared imminent.”

Bulger is survived by two younger brothers and his wife, Catherine Greig, with whom he evaded authorities as a wanted fugitive for 16 years. Greig is doing 8 years at FCI Waseca in Waseca, Minnesota for related charges including harboring a fugitive, identity fraud, and conspiracy to commit identity fraud. She has a scheduled release date of September 29, 2020.

Further details have not yet been released by prison authorities. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

Like everything else, classical music is getting faster October 30, 2018 at 01:08PM https://ift.tt/2P0Kw0U

People are not playing Bach like they used to.

Universal Music Group found that recordings of the work of Johann Sebastian Bach—the German Baroque composer who died in 1750—are being performed 30% faster than they were 50 years ago. The company’s sample size was small, though; it looked at three recordings of the Double Violin Concerto on two of the company’s classical-music labels. One from 1961 lasted 17 minutes; a recording from 1978 was just over 15 minutes; and the latest from 2016 lasted just 12 minutes.

If this is indeed a trend, it mirrors what’s happening in popular music, where the biggest hits are also getting shorter and faster. Intros to pop hits averaged more than 20 seconds in the 1980s. They are now about five seconds long and song titles are shorter than they used to be—often just a single word, according to one study in Musicae Scientiae, the journal of the European Society for the Cognitive Sciences of Music.

Earlier this month, Quartz suggested the reason pop songs are getting shorter has to do with the rise of streaming.

“Pop music follows the evolution of society in general: Everything moves faster,” said pop hitmaker Max Martin, the man behind 21 songs that have topped the Billboard charts, in 2016.

Who knew the same was true for classical music?

A low-cost airline is pioneering the flight of electric planes October 30, 2018 at 12:54PM https://ift.tt/2qkJmPg

“Electric flying is becoming a reality and we can now foresee a future that is not exclusively dependent on jet fuel.”

So says Johan Lundgren, CEO of the British low-cost airline easyJet, which wants electric airplanes flying in the sky by 2027. To get there, it has been partnering with US startup Wright Electric, which has been testing a two-seater plane. Lundgren told Reuters that they plan to test a nine-seat electric plane next year.

EasyJet wants electric planes to fly routes of about 500 km (310 miles) within the next 10 years—that would mean that flights from London to Amsterdam, Europe’s second busiest route, could become all-electric. (In the environmental stakes, though, that one-hour flight would compete more with trains than traditional planes, and the direct London-to-Amsterdam train is now as fast as 3 hr 44 mins.)

Airplanes have been trying to go greener for awhile; for Wired UK back in 2009, I wrote about Richard Branson’s efforts to get biofuels into Virgin Atlantic planes to mix with jetfuel, a process across the airline industry that is still quite slow-going. The Tesla-ization of the airplane is also taking some time—an Airbus E-Fan was the first electric plane to successfully fly across the English Channel last year but a Siemens electric-plane prototype crashed earlier this year, killing its pilot and passenger.

Wright’s aim is to quickly build a 150-seat plane to compete primarily with the Boeing 737 and Airbus 320, the short-haul planes from the world’s two biggest aircraft manufacturers.

GE is making one of the biggest dividend cuts in history—again October 30, 2018 at 12:40PM https://ift.tt/2AzW9Df

When General Electric fired its CEO a month ago, investors cheered the move. They might not be so enthusiastic about it now.

GE’s new chief, Lawrence Culp, today (Oct. 30) announced the once-mighty conglomerate was cutting its dividend for the second time in a year, quarterly earnings that failed to meet analyst’s (modest) expectations, and news that American securities regulators were expanding their investigation into the company’s accounting practices. Shares are down some 8% at the time of writing, a daily decline worth more than $8 billion in market cap.

GE has paid an annual dividend since the 1930s, helping cement its reputation as one of the bluest of Blue Chip stocks. The dividend, which was cut from 24 cents to 12 cents a share in Sept. 2017, will now pay investors just a penny per share. The move will save the cash-starved company around $4 billion, but punishes the retail investors who depended on GE’s dividend for income.

According to Howard Silverblatt of Standard & Poor’s, GE is now responsible for three of the largest dividend cuts, in absolute terms, since the S&P started tracking them in 1955:

2

9

Nov. 2017

GE

10

GE’s decline has been long and slow, until it became sudden and fast. Under celebrity CEO Jack Welch, the company was one of the most admired on Wall Street, and in 2001 it was the largest in the world by market cap (now, it’s 52nd). Much of that value was built not on the engineering products it was originally known for, but financial services. When the world’s credit markets collapsed in 2008, GE Capital was left badly exposed.

Welch’s successor, Jeff Immelt, presided over a clumsy, decade-long transition from a company dependent on finance to one that bet its future on green power. Investors eventually grew impatient with the stock’s long slide and forced him out last year. Immelt was replaced by John Flannery, who himself was fired Oct. 1.

Culp must be hoping GE is bottoming out in his first month on the job, and the only way to go is up. Investors don’t seem in the mood to give him much time to prove it.

A coven of paddleboarding witches took over an Oregon river for Halloween October 30, 2018 at 12:32PM https://ift.tt/2zjqF2m

A serene site greeted Oregonians yesterday evening as hundreds of witches (and wizards) took to the Willamette River in Portland for a group paddleboard session. The coven was in full witch garb as they swanned down the river, most sporting pointed hats and black robes with stuffed black cats strapped to their boards. Some even showed up Oz-style with green-painted skin:

This is the second year “Standup Paddleboard Witch Paddle,” has taken place. This year, participants donated clothes and coats to several Oregon charities for the winter.

Whether all of the witches are part of a genuine coven (which wouldn’t be surprising considering the growing population of US witches) is unclear.

Spooky or super chill? In any case, paddleboarding is harder than it looks, and it doesn’t look like any of these folks fell into the water. Perhaps they used a spell to stay balanced.

The new iPad Pro doesn’t have a headphone jack October 30, 2018 at 12:25PM https://ift.tt/2RpSTjE

Apple is hell-bent on removing the scourge of headphone jacks from the world.

In addition to nixing the port from its phones, the Cupertino-based tech company has now turned its reductionist attention to the iPad, which lost its headphone jack in the product’s newest iteration announced today (Oct. 30). Instead of a Lightning port and headphone jack, the new iPad Pro will only feature a USB-C port.

This means that if you want to listen to music on your iPad, you have to use Bluetooth headphones or buy yet another dongle to convert the USB-C port into a headphone jack. If you have an iPhone as well, you’ll have to carry two separate dongles for your wired headphones: a Lightning port-to-headphone jack for your iPhone and a USB-C-to-headphone jack for your new iPad.

Apple, a simple question: When are you going to have the courage to remove the headphone jack from your laptops?

The best-selling author of the Chinese-speaking world has died October 30, 2018 at 12:18PM https://ift.tt/2zhPI5W

Louis Cha, whose martial-arts fantasies about heroes who triumphed over the corrupt forces of society won him legions of lifelong fans, died on Tuesday at the age of 94 in Hong Kong.

Cha originally studied law and wanted to be a diplomat, taking up work as a journalist to pay his way. As fighters led by Mao Zedong were establishing a Communist Party-ruled China, Cha moved to Hong Kong with the newspaper he worked for. Seven years later he published The Book and the Sword, his first work of martial-arts fiction, or wuxia, as a serial in the paper, under the name Jin Yong. The Condor trilogy, possibly his most celebrated work, was published in 1957. He continued working as a journalist, co-founding Hong Kong newspaper Ming Pao in 1959.

Cha’s works, set in China’s own history and shaped by his worries about the fate of the individual in Maoist China, were only allowed in the mainland after 1984 under Deng Xiaoping, reportedly a fan of the novels. Over time, the books inspired movies, TV shows, radio programs, stamps, and video games, and many across the Chinese diaspora credit his books as the reason they kept in touch with the language.

Jack Ma, founder of Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, loved the books so much he adopted the nickname Feng Qingyang, a swordsman from one of Cha’s books, The Smiling, Proud Wanderer (1967). Alibaba’s values are also dubbed “Six Vein Spirit Sword,” after another Cha novel.

But Cha is little known in the English-speaking world. A professional English translation of the Condor trilogy is only underway now, with the first book, A Hero Born, having been published in February.

Tributes to Cha flew across Chinese social media platforms and on Twitter.

“Everyone, I mean everyone, on my WeChat timeline has something to say about Jin Yong,” wrote New York Times tech columnist Li Yuan. “We all read and reread his novels in our teens, 20s, 30s until today. His novels took us to a magical place that justice always prevails.”

Apple just made the iPad its new entry-level computer October 30, 2018 at 11:57AM https://ift.tt/2SwqWYK

True to form, Apple is making everything more expensive.

Each of the new devices Apple released today (Oct. 30)—updates to the iPad Pro, MacBook Air, and Mac Mini—are each pricier than their predecessors. The move marks a shift for the iPad and the MacBook Air, which are typically the most affordably priced computing devices Apple sells.

The MacBook Air has been the entry-level computer for most users since its release—it’s small and portable, but also the only Apple laptop you could buy for $1,000. For that reason, and the laptop’s durability, it’s become an institution for universities and businesses that want to be in the Apple ecosystem but not spring for pricier MacBook or MacBook Pro models.

At its inception, the iPad existed somewhere between the iPhone and the MacBook lines—it was priced less than a typical Apple laptop, but could also do less. The idea was that there were specific tasks like emailing and internet browsing that didn’t require a full computer, and could be done efficiently on a streamlined device.

But now that’s different: Apple is touting the iPad as a do-it-all machine, the new entry-level device for those wanting an Apple computer. The 11″ and 12.9″ iPads will start at $799 and $999, compelling price points if thinking about the devices as capable of everything a laptop can do. Of course, those costs don’t include the keyboard and Apple Pencil. On the other hand, the MacBook Air starts at $1,199 for the base model, and has similar specifications to its more powerful MacBook lines like the MacBook and MacBook Pro. It’s just smaller.

Apple is setting up a new paradigm for its computers, one that doesn’t necessarily suggest that you need a laptop if you want a computer. And for those who do, well, you’re simply furthering Apple’s plan of making more money selling the same thing.

Apple has started its retreat from the Lightning port October 30, 2018 at 11:29AM https://ift.tt/2qh2bCV

Apple’s newest iPad Pro, just announced today (Oct. 30) at the company’s October hardware event, is thinner and lighter, and squeezes iPad-sized screens into smaller form factors.

There’s one thing that’s missing—the Lightning port. Apple has ditched the proprietary charging and data port in favor of a more universal option, the USB-C port. This means that the iPhone and Airpods are the only Apple products in this newest generation of offerings that have a Lightning port. Laptops, desktops, and now tablets all sporting the USB-C.

Apple switched to its Lightning port in 2012 with the iPhone 5. The new port was far smaller than the previous 30-pin cable originally used by iPods. It wasn’t just smaller—it was also reversible! For six years, every new mobile product Apple released has had a Lightning port—until the newest iPad Pro.

As the USB-C invades Apple’s mobile lineup, the company also has started adding wireless charging to iPhones. Coupled with Apple’s history of removing buttons and ports from its devices, it seems unlikely that the Lightning port will be included in future Apple phones. Maybe they’ll have USB-C. Or maybe they’ll have nothing at all.

Google’s addictive Halloween multiplayer game is a spooky way to procrastinate October 30, 2018 at 11:14AM https://ift.tt/2PuAiFE

In honor of Halloween, Google Doodle introduced its first-ever multiplayer game today (Oct. 30) called The Great Ghoul Duel—and it’s very addictive.

My prediction: Thousands of hours of work will be lost in the next day or so as people play the ghost game that is found at today's #GoogleDoodle … it's quite addictive – https://t.co/5YCdIaO89Q pic.twitter.com/LtM21nWopz

— Mike Johansson (@mikejny) October 30, 2018

The game is as ghostly and competitive as it sounds: Players form two teams of up to four ghouls and try to collect as many “Spirit Flames” as possible. These flames stack up to make a tail on each player. Ghouls from the competing team can intercept and steal them—the team that brings the most flames back to home base wins.

Players can also unlock special powers like speed boosts or win a title at the end (like “Most Spirited”). All the while, a creepy and catchy tune plays in the background to get you into the Halloween mood. Like Google’s adorable Halloween game from 2016, The Magic Cat Academy, this year’s doodle is likely to distract many people at the office.

The new #GoogleDoodle game is super addictive. I predict a big drop in productivity today. P.s. the green team suck #teampurple #Halloween2018 pic.twitter.com/Le98i5FiFo

— Laura Chisholm (@LauraChisholmPR) October 30, 2018

The Great Ghoul Duel is powered by Google Cloud and integrates Open Match, an open-source matchmaking framework that connects players to one another. After visiting Google’s home page to start playing, you can compete with random strangers or host a game and invite up to seven family and friends using a special link.

On a day when I'm behind in my work #GoogleDoodle gives me this. pic.twitter.com/RXnvjIWZqK

— Stella Stevens CFCW (@StellaCFCW) October 30, 2018

Luckily, each game only lasts two minutes—although that doesn’t mean you can’t play it on repeat.

Apple finally updated its cheapest laptop—and made it more expensive October 30, 2018 at 11:06AM https://ift.tt/2PsgXoK

After four years without a major redesign, Apple has announced a new MacBook Air.

The new model has a high-resolution 13.3″ Retina display, as well as updated Intel i5 processor. It also boasts up to 16GB of RAM and 1.5 TB of storage. Apple has also updated the MacBook Air’s keyboard and touchpad, making the keyboard thinner and the touchpad larger.

The laptop is also, of course, smaller and lighter, weighing just 2.75 lbs.

Apple says that it has engineered a new way of recapturing aluminum shavings from the production process, meaning every new MacBook Air is made from recycled aluminum.

You’ll pay more than ever before for the new Air. The laptop starts at $1,199, which is $200 more than the previous generation. That base model will only have a 1.6 GHz i5 CPU, as well as 8GB of RAM, and 128 GB of SSD storage.

The laptops are available today (Oct. 30) and will ship Nov. 7.

Pharrell has issued Donald Trump a cease-and-desist for using “Happy” at a rally October 30, 2018 at 10:43AM https://ift.tt/2RmM4PD

Just hours after a mass shooting at a synagogue in Pittsburgh, the Pharrell Williams song “Happy” was played at a Donald Trump political rally in Indiana. The songwriter says he did not authorize use of the song and a cease-and-desist letter sent by the musician’s lawyer, Howard King, outlined the specific horror the musician felt given the context.

Dear Mr. Trump,

We write to you an behalf of our client, Pharrell Williams, composer and performer of the hit song, “Happy.” On the day of the mass murder of 11 human beings at the hands of a deranged “nationalist,” you played his song “Happy” to a crowd at a political event in Indiana. There was nothing “happy” about the tragedy inflicted upon our country on Saturday and no permission was granted for your use of this song for this purpose.

Pharrell Williams is the owner of the copyright in “Happy,” with the exclusive right to exploit same. Pharrell has not, and will not, grant you permission to publicly perform or otherwise broadcast or disseminate any of his music.

Williams, a Grammy winner, Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters in France, and a supporter of arts education, is not the first musician to object to use of one of their songs at Trump rallies and campaign events. Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, Neil Young, R.E.M., Queen, Prince’s estate, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones have all protested.

WOWZA. Check out this cease and desist sent by Pharrell Williams to Donald Trump for using “Happy” on “the day of the mass murder of 11 human beings,” as the letter puts it. pic.twitter.com/Mst83Vp0kO

How to watch Apple’s October event October 30, 2018 at 09:01AM https://ift.tt/2AzWHJk

Apple apparently has more to show off.

A little over a month after it unveiled the new iPhone Xs and Apple Watch Series 4, Apple is coming to New York today (Oct. 30) to host another event, where we’re expecting to see new iPads, Mac desktops and laptops, and perhaps a few other surprises.

Quartz’s Mike Murphy will be in attendance, so be sure to follow along with him. Here’s how to watch the event live:

The event is scheduled to begin at 10am US Eastern time, 7am US Pacific time, 2pm London time, and 10pm Hong Kong time.

Apple will stream the event at this link.

The details: Apple’s livestream is best viewed on its Safari browser on iOS devices running iOS 10 or later, or Macs running macOS Sierra 10.12 or later. The event will also be streamed to second- and third-generation Apple TV devices running the latest software. To watch on a PC, users will need to use the Microsoft Edge browser from a machine running Windows 10. Apple says the stream also should work on recent versions of Chrome and Firefox.

Fair warning: The stream isn’t always reliable.

The UK border’s latest rule change is pretty rude to the EU October 30, 2018 at 08:47AM https://ift.tt/2JoGlpI

Yesterday, at the UK’s annual autumn budget announcement, Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond included details of a new rule at the UK border, one that will make visiting the UK much easier for visitors from certain nations.

He said:

We’ll open the use of e-passport gates at Heathrow and other airports…

…currently only available to EEA nationals…

…to include visitors from the US, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Japan;

Currently, when you arrive at a UK airport, UK citizens and all members of the European Economic Area (which includes the 27 EU member states as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway) who have a biometric passport do not have to interface with a border patrol agent. Instead, they can move straight through the automatic e-passport gates. It’s the type of automated, seamless travel that architects of the EU’s “freedom of movement” principle probably envisaged.

It’s unclear whether Hammond meant that the e-passport gates would be open, post-Brexit, to visitors from those nations in place of those from the EEA, who could be subject to more stringent checks. It’s also not yet clear when the change will take place. (Quartz reached out to the Home Office for clarification, and will update this post with any response.) But then again, nothing about post-Brexit Britain is particularly clear at the moment.

It appears the announcement is part of the broader “registered traveller” program that streamlines entry into the UK for a range of nations. And, as Bloomberg noted, allowing these nations’ citizens to “jump the queue” is “part of the UK’s bid to open more broadly beyond Europe as it prepares to separate from the EU.” It could also be a not particularly subtle message to Europe: “We still have friends.”

This may be good news for Americans, Canadians, New Zealanders, Australians, and Japanese, but it doesn’t do much to dispel the uncertainty looming over the nature of post-Brexit movement between the UK and the rest of Europe. And announcing the change at the final annual budget before leaving the EU is a bit, well, rude.
