Invest in the Sustainable Development Goals with this new ETF - ImpactAlpha
SDGA will invest in public companies committed to the UN’s SDGs September 24, 2018 at 06:49PM https://ift.tt/2zrZIL8

ImpactAlpha, September 24 – As U.N. Week gets underway in New York, nonprofit investment manager Impact Shares has rolled out a Sustainable Development Goals-aligned exchange traded fund (ETF) on the New York Stock Exchange. It is the third impact-focused ETF Impact Shares has launched this year. Impact Shares partnered with the Rockefeller Foundation and the U.N. Capital Development Fund—an agency trying to usher capital into the world’s 47 poorest countries––to launch the fund.

The new fund, which is listed with the ticker SDGA, includes shares of companies that have committed to supporting the SDGs, particularly in low-income markets. Companies are selected for the fund based on four screening criteria: no U.N. exclusionary criteria (i.e. they aren’t selling alcohol or making nuclear weapons); low controversy rating (from Sustainalytics, based on issues like ethics, governance, and social issues); U.N. Global Compact signatory; and ranking based on 70 ESG metrics (like corruption, supply chain monitoring, and working conditions.) A fifth screen gives companies an additional boost based on how much revenue they generate in low-income countries.

“This new Social ETF not only addresses the estimated $2.5 trillion annual funding gap required to achieve SDGs in developing countries, it also provides UNCDF a critical new source of funding to continue its good work helping vulnerable people overcome many of the pressing global challenges that impact livelihoods,” said Rockefeller Foundation’s Saadia Madsbjerg. That source of funding will come from the ETF’s management fee, which will be donated to UNCDF.

Earlier this year, Impact Shares launched two other impact ETFs on the New York Stock Exchange, built around similar partnership models. It launched one in partnership with the NAACP, trading as NACP, built around companies focused on minority empowerment. In August, it launched a women’s empowerment ETF in partnership with the WYCA, which trades under the ticker WOMN.

“The goal is to have a platform that’s a barometer for social prioritization,” Impact Shares’ Ethan Powell told ImpactAlpha in July.

Craigslist founder backs news site to cover Big Tech's impact on society - ImpactAlpha
Craigslist founder backs news site to cover Big Tech’s impact on society September 24, 2018 at 06:42PM https://ift.tt/2NChhB1

ImpactAlpha, September 24 – Former ProPublica investigative journalists Julia Angwin and Jeff Larson are planning to launch a new news organization, called The Markup, to uncover and report the impact of big tech on society. Their idea is getting a $22 million grant-funded boost, with $20 million from Craigslist founder Craig Newmark alone.

The Markup, which will likely launch in early 2019, intends to explore issues like discriminatory software and algorithms and the spread of misinformation. The new endeavor comes at a time when traditional news organizations are struggling to stay afloat, much less become financially viable, and to compete in a time of political polarization, digital noise and misinformation.

The Markup’s particular area of focus, however, cuts to the heart of those issues. While the aim is to heighten awareness and scrutiny of big tech activities, Newmark told the New York Times that he believes it will also help Big Tech become more self-reflective.

“Sometimes it takes an engineer a while to understand that we need help, then we get that help, and then we do a lot better,” Newmark said. “We need the help that only investigative reporting with good data science can provide.”

In addition to Newmark’s grant, the Markup has raised $2 million from the Knight Foundation and additional funding from the Ford Foundation, MacArthur Foundation, and the Ethics and Governance of Artificial Intelligence Initiative.

MIT Solve competition selects 33 Solvers for open-sourced impact ideas September 24, 2018 at 06:28PM https://ift.tt/2xCaLjQ

ImpactAlpha, September 24 – MIT launched the Solve Challenge in 2015 to crowd-source promising ideas for global impact. The idea was to leverage the university’s minds and network to support anyone, anywhere in the world, with a good idea.

The competition has selected 33 “Solvers” out of 1,150 applicants for its four 2018 themes (work of the future, teachers and educators, coastal communities, front lines of health). Each receive a $10,000 prize and will be eligible for additional funding from Solve’s partners. The winners include:

Shimmy Upskill, a platform to help retrain workers vulnerable to job loss from automation, and seven other teams in the Work of the Future track.

Eneza, an SMS- and app-based educational platform, and seven other teams in the Teachers & Educators track. (Eneza also just raised funding from FINCA’s new venture capital initiative, FINCA Ventures.)

Neopenda, which makes a device to monitor newborns’ vitals, and seven other teams in the Frontlines of Health track. Neopenda was also awarded $30,000 from Citi and SAP Next-Gen through Solve for its “gender-responsive innovation.”

Marauder Robotics, which makes autonomous underwater drones to support marine ecosystem balance, and eight other teams in the Coastal Communities track.

Solve has also raised new funding for current and past teams, through thematic grant opportunities. The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Atlassian Foundation have contributed $2.6 million to help teams from last year’s Youth, Skills and the Workforce of the Future track scale. Meanwhile RISE is making an additional $1 million available to this year’s Coastal Communities teams.

In all, Solve has facilitated more than $4.5 million this year in grants for its collective cohort of more than 120 winning teams.

"Ew," "yowza," and "OK" are now fair to play in Scrabble — Quartzy
“Ew,” “yowza,” and other new Scrabble words to up your game September 24, 2018 at 03:51PM https://ift.tt/2ONKN3m

Here’s a new way to score high during your turn in Scrabble: “Yowza!”

That’s one of 300 entries added to Merriam-Webster’s Official Scrabble Players Dictionary on Monday (Sept. 24), and playing it will earn you a minimum of 20 points. Two-letter words used in daily text-speak, such as “OK,” are now OK to use, too.

The addition of new words marks the sixth edition of Merriam-Webster’s Scrabble dictionary, the first of which was published in 1976. (Previously, game rules stated that any desk dictionary could be consulted.) The range of new words not only presents fresh opportunities for high scores, but also reflects a more globalized and social media-connected world.

“Ew,” for instance, is a newly added word and an example of what lexicographer Peter Sokolowski, editor at large at Merriam-Webster, calls “transcribed speech.” This refers to expressions, such as “mm-hmm” (not playable) that are colloquial and used frequently online. Sokolowski told the Associated Press: “Traditionally, they were not in the dictionary but because so much of our communication is texting and social media that is written language, we are finding more transcribed speech and getting a new group of spellings for the dictionary.”

Foreign words such as “bibimbap,” and “sriracha” are also now officially Scrabble-recognized, which is an indication that these terms are used frequently enough by English-language speakers to be deemed playable—and they’re sweet scorers, too.

To up your Scrabble game, here is a selection of the dictionary’s latest additions and their base totals (the minimum score based on tile values, without boosters such as a “double word” square). Some of these are power moves, but others are just terms we’re finally glad to throw down.

Zomboid: 21 points

Yowza: 20 points

Emoji: 14 points

Facepalm: 17 points

Ok: 6 points

Twerk: 12 points

Ew: 5 points

Sriracha: 13 points

Bibimbap: 18 points

Arancini: 10 points

Beatdown: 14 points

Zen: 12 points

Qapik: 20 points

Bizjet: 24 points (Fun fact: If used during opening play and as a plural, “bizjets,” this word could be worth 120 points due to the 50-point bonus for using all seven tiles, and the double word bonus typically used at the start.)

Nepal is set to double its wild tiger population — Quartz
Nepal is on track to double its wild tiger population in under 10 years September 24, 2018 at 01:22PM https://ift.tt/2OLPIlb

Once upon a time, the world was overrun with tigers. Less than a century ago, as many as 100,000 of big stripey cats may have prowled through Asia’s mountains and jungles. Today, the wild tiger population hovers below the 4,000 mark.

But there’s a bright spot on the horizon for Earth’s largest cat. As part of the World Wildlife Foundation’s efforts to double tiger populations by 2022, the next Chinese year of the tiger, governments of 13 countries are rallying around the animals. Now, as Al Jazeera reports, Nepal is the first country set to meet their target—four years ahead of schedule.

In 2009, Nepal’s tiger numbers were languishing at around 121. According to a national tiger survey held between November 2017 and April 2018, that figure has since risen to a booming 235, and is all but certain to hit 242 in the next four years. The pressure is now on for the other 12 countries with tiger ranges to follow suit, including India, which had 2,226 tigers in 2016, and Russia and Indonesia, which have 433 and 371 tigers respectively.

It’s a big ask. But conservationists—and their Hollywood spokespeople—are feeling optimistic. ”This significant increase in Nepal’s tiger population is proof that when we work together, we can save the planet’s wildlife—even species facing extinction,” said Leonardo DiCaprio, a board member of the association and chairman of his own eponymous charity, which has funded tiger conservation since 2010.

19 banks likely to meet minimum capital requirement - Dr. Addison - MyJoyOnline.com
19 banks likely to meet minimum capital requirement - Dr. Addison September 24, 2018 at 01:16PM https://ift.tt/2DpYGDF

About 19 banks are likely to meet the new capital requirement of GH₵400 million by December this year, Governor of the Bank of Ghana has said.

According to Dr. Ernest Addison, this is based on documents submitted by the commercial banks, as well as BoG’s own analysis.

Dr. Addison disclosed this during an interaction with journalists after meeting to review health of economy last week.

Currently there are about 30 commercial banks in the country, according to the list of licensed banks issued by the Bank of Ghana in August this year.

Background

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) revised the minimum capital levels for banks in response to developments in the banking industry and the economy at large.

In 2003, the minimum capital requirement was raised from GH¢2.5 million to GH¢7.0 million to enable all banks convert to universal banks. The minimum capital requirement was also increased to GH¢60 million in 2007.

In 2013, BoG again raised the minimum capital requirement to GH¢120 million for new entrants and advised existing banks to take steps to increase their capital in line with their risk profiles.

BoG issued a Minimum Capital Requirement Directive in September 2017, increasing the minimum capital requirement for all banks to GH¢400 million from GH¢120 million.

Banks are therefore required to meet this requirement by December 2018 through the injection of fresh equity capital.

The recent GH¢400 million minimum capital increase was deemed necessary for a number of reasons; Solvency, Macroeconomic impact on capital, Credit expansion and good corporate governance.

According to the Bank of Ghana, it will closely monitor banks’ plans to recapitalize to ensure an orderly recapitalization process.

Directives

The BoG recently issued its Corporate Governance Directive, which it expects banks to comply with to strengthen their corporate governance practices, thereby promoting investor confidence in them and thereby facilitating access to new capital.

BoG has encouraged banks that may be unable to raise new capital on their own, to explore opportunities to merge with other banks.

Such mergers and acquisitions should lead to larger, stronger, and better capitalized banks for shareholders of the merging banks.

Former Google China pres. Kai-Fu Lee explains why paranoia's important - Business Insider
An investor who built 13 billion dollar companies explains why it's important to be paranoid if you want to succeed September 24, 2018 at 11:08AM https://ift.tt/2xL6CJn

Former Google China president Kai-Fu Lee has invested in 13 companies that have attained billion dollar valuations.

Among his portfolio companies' most successful entrepreneurs, Lee identifies one key quality: They're paranoid.

Kai-Fu Lee is the former president of Google China and a technology investor who has funded both American and Chinese startups. Among his portfolio companies, thirteen have achieved coveted unicorn status with valuations of a billion dollars or more.

Many of these successful companies have Chinese entrepreneurs at their helm, who operate under a different mindset than the typical American entrepreneur. A key quality that these entrepreneurs possess is what Lee describes as being effectively "paranoid."

Chinese entrepreneurs aren't afraid to duplicate good ideas, often resulting in a number of companies fiercely competing for industry dominance. In order to succeed, they build their companies early on with the intent to monopolize the market. ...

Slack acquires Astro Technology to bring togother email and chat — Quartz at Work
Slack has made its biggest acquisition to date September 24, 2018 at 11:07AM https://ift.tt/2DrkLSi

There’s a common understanding that there are two types of people in this world: Slack people and email people. In reality, most modern offices use both (if not Slack, one of its messaging competitors; here at Quartz we happen to use Slack). But there’s a cognitive cost to switching back-and-forth between multiple workplace communication apps.

So far, Slack has prided itself on its ability to play well with others through custom integrations with workplace tools like Salesforce and Google Drive. But Slack’s ultimate goal has always been to be a singular destination for getting work done—like a team’s virtual office that others can enter and leave throughout the day.

A new acquisition gets the company one step closer to achieving this goal, by bringing calendar and email functionality into Slack rather than having users constantly open and close tabs, whether physically or mentally, throughout the workday.

Slack has acquired Astro, a productivity startup that uses artificial intelligence to surface important information from your emails and calendar. The Palo Alto-based company built Astrobot, a popular plug-in that lets you check your email and calendar information directly from Slack.

Astro is a 28-person company, the largest Slack has acquired to date. Besides the size of the acquisition, the move is notable because it represents an expansion of Slack’s workplace dominance. Last month, Slack acquired Stride and Hipchat, two former competitors, from the enterprise software giant Atlassian. With only 70,000 paying teams, which equates to roughly 3 million individual users, Slack has become a $7 billion company.

Slack did not release the terms of the Astro deal, but given that it raised half a billion dollars last month, it certainly has plenty to spend.

“Whereas last year we just needed to make it so that more people could use the Slack that already exists, now we’re starting to take steps to expand what Slack is,” says April Underwood, Slack’s VP of product.

Astro’s algorithms use artificial intelligence to learn what you care about and to separate the essential stuff from all the inbox clutter. Astrobot users loved the app’s Slack integration because it allowed them to continue working without missing out on important emails and calendar items.

Though Slack will sunset Astro’s services on Oct. 1o, it will integrate Astro’s technology and employees. Slack has taken a similar “acquire to integrate” approach with its other acquisitions to date.

Following a meeting with President Abdel Fattah El Sisi in New York today, Ms. Christine Lagarde, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, made the following statement:

"President El Sisi and I discussed the good progress under Egypt's economic reform program supported by the IMF's US$12 billion Extended Fund Facility. Egypt's economy is showing strong signs of recovery, and its economic growth is among the highest in the Middle East.

"We agreed on the importance of capitalizing on Egypt's macroeconomic gains to advance the authorities' home-grown structural reforms. These reforms will help achieve more sustainable, inclusive and private-sector led growth which will help create jobs for Egypt's young population, while also ensuring adequate resources are available for social protection. I reiterated the Fund's commitment to support Egypt and its people."

TPG Growth moves to raise second Rise Fund, and this time the target is $3 billion

Private equity firm TPG Growth closed its fundraising for the Rise Fund at $2 billion last year. The firm says it already has committed $1.5 billion. Now TPG Growth is planning a second Rise fund; it is reportedly looking to raise $3 billion.

The Rise Fund’s founder, Bill McGlashan, has described himself as “hell-bent on activating the trillions needed to achieve the U.N.’s Sustainable Development Goals.” The Rise Fund has been furiously ushering its own money out the door to that end, with an impact performance methodology it spent two years and millions of dollars developing in partnership with Bridgespan Group. A spokesperson declined to comment on the fund’s impact performance.

Rise Fund’s Impact Multiple of Money: A conversation with TPG’s Bill McGlashan

So far, 15 of the Rise Fund’s deals have made headlines. They include several $100-million-plus deals, like its $130 million investment in edtech company DreamBox and $120 million investment in EverFi. The portfolio also includes relatively smaller deals in the tens of millions, like Indian dairy company Dodla Dairy and energy company Fourth Partner Energy, as well as a number of earlier stage investments.

A portion of the $1.5 billion the Rise Fund has committed has been invested in small, co-investments. The fund also appears to have capital slated for follow-on investments.

India's alcohol consumption doubled in a decade, says WHO — Quartz India
Indians—men and women—are drinking more alcohol than a decade ago September 24, 2018 at 02:36AM https://ift.tt/2OM4JDF

Already among the world’s highest consumers of alcohol, India’s love for its drinks is growing rapidly.

Over the decade ending 2016, the country’s per capita spirits consumption more than doubled to 5.7 litres, according to a World Health Organisation (pdf) study.

Despite this jump, India is behind China where the figure (ie per capita consumption of alcohol) stood at over 7 litres, the report said. India is also behind developed countries where it is at 10 litres (pdf).

Drinking fads

Over the years, higher disposable incomes, change in attitudes towards alcohol consumption, and the proliferation of an eating-out culture have spurred demand.

At $38 billion (Rs2.7 lakh crore) India’s alcohol market is among the world’s fastest growing. Globally, 6% of the industry’s growth (pdf) was driven by India. Indians have a preference for whisky, consuming half of the world’s production. The country is also the world’s largest producer of whisky.

Alcohol consumption in India has grown across genders, though men remain way ahead of women.

But there is also the inevitable negative side to it. On an average, India reported 2,60,000 alcohol-related deaths annually caused by ailments and road accidents, WHO said in its study.

Yet, per capita consumption is only set to grow by another 2.2 litres by 2025, one of the highest jumps in south and east Asia, WHO said.

WaterEquity’s third fund reaches $33 million first close - ImpactAlpha
WaterEquity’s third fund reaches $33 million first close September 23, 2018 at 04:26PM https://ift.tt/2O6Inj9

ImpactAlpha, September 21 – WaterEquity, a subsidiary of Matt Damon’s Water.org, announced it has reached a $33 million first close for its WaterCredit Investment Fund 3 (WCIF3) almost 18 months after it raised the first slug of capital from Bank of America.

The fund backs microfinance institutions and water and sanitation-based ventures like micro-utilities, toilet manufacturers, and water kiosks to improve access to clean water worldwide. Thirty percent of the world’s population lacks access to safe water and 60% lack adequate sanitation services, according to the World Health Organization.

The company’s first fund, which focused on lending to microfinance organizations, leveraged the $11 million raised to support improved access to safe water and sanitation for 320,000 people in India. It also returned 3.6% to investors annually.

The third fund is looking to reach 4.6 million people and return 3.5% to investors.

In addition to the $5 million in interest-free debt BofA committed last April, WCIF3 is backed by $20 million from OPIC, which was raised last September. The remainder has been committed by Ceniarth, Niagara Bottling, and the Conrad N. Hilton, Skoll, and Osprey Foundations.

WaterEquity expects to announce a second close later this year.

Townhall Ventures secures $115 million for health access fund - ImpactAlpha
Townhall Ventures secures $115 million for health access fund September 23, 2018 at 04:26PM https://ift.tt/2PWIX04

ImpactAlpha, September 21 – Townhall Ventures was launched in May to spur a “massive and necessary shift” in healthcare for low-income Americans. It’s investment focus is on companies trying to improve healthcare services, access, and the social determinants of health for 120 million low-income, elderly, and underserved Americans.

Less than six months later, the investment firm, led by Obama’s former Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services’ head Andy Slavitt and Oxeon Ventures partners Trevor Price and David Whelan, has reached a $115 million first close, with backing from “four of the five largest non-profit health systems and non-profit health payors” in the U.S., according to a company statement. The organizations were not named, however they collectively serve 23 million people in 42 U.S. states.

Townhall Ventures has not stated how much it ultimately hopes to raise for the fund. It has already begun deploying the capital it has on hand, however. So far, the firm has made eight investments, including three recent deals: affordable home-care provider Landmark Health; health insurance provider Bright Health; and Strive Health, a company working with specialists, patients and data to improve treatment for kidney diseases.

Last US nuclear weapons test took place 26 years ago today — Quartz
The last US nuclear weapons test took place 26 years ago today September 23, 2018 at 02:19PM https://ift.tt/2QRuBiO

The last US nuclear weapons test took place on Sept. 23, 1992, at the Nevada Test Site. It was the 1,030th such experiment, the most conducted by any country since the first US atom bomb was exploded in 1945.

Onsite protests and a campaign of political activism at the end of the Cold War led the US to enact a moratorium on further tests shortly after the final one, which was called “Divider.” Russia, no longer the Soviet Union, had announced its own halt to such tests a year earlier, in October 1991.

Preparations for the final nuclear weapons test in US history.
The moratorium would be continued under president Bill Clinton and eventually extend into the global treaty banning nuclear tests, the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, in 1996. Though 183 nations have signed on, the US has yet to ratify the convention and bring it officially into force.

Some lawmakers feared that the US nuclear deterrent would be compromised if the country was unable to test its weapons stockpile. However, scientists and engineers argue that the US can maintain an effective arsenal without actually exploding the weapons.

The unintended consequences of testing are still being felt today: Fallout from the Nevada experiments was likely responsible for the deaths of as many as 690,000 American civilians, according to new research into the radioactive contamination.

The only nuclear weapons tests in the 21st century have taken place in North Korea. The program there is the subject of fraught diplomacy as South Korea and the US urge strongman Kim Jong Un to move toward denuclearization.
