Study: the 4-day work week works | Big Think
The 4-day work week works. So why aren't we using it? July 22, 2018 at 07:07PM https://ift.tt/2uWJ96L

A study conducted by a New Zealand business confirmed what many of us have felt on Friday afternoons: a 5-day work week really isn't that effective. The study went one further and gave credence to slackers everywhere: a 4-day work week is actually more productive than a 5-day work week.

Perpetual Guardian, a wealth management firm in Wellington, New Zealand ran the experiment for 8 weeks and hired two researchers to report back on the findings of the study. According to the New York Times, which broke the story, employees found a 24% increase in productivity and a better work-life balance. That's not all: all meetings were truncated from two hours to half an hour each. Sound like heaven in an office setting?

The company's founder, Andrew Barnes, put the idea of the 4-day work week into motion after reading about a Business Insider article about how a 40 hour work week might be 5 hours too long and how workplace distractions are as productivity-killing as smoking pot or losing sleep.

An HR professor at the University of Auckland, Jarrod Harr, confirms that the findings were extremely beneficial to the company. “They worked out where they were wasting time and worked smarter, not harder,” he said, “Supervisors said staff were more creative, their attendance was better, they were on time, and they didn’t leave early or take long breaks. TTheir actual job performance didn’t change when doing it over four days instead of five.”

America, on the other hand, works more than any other developed country with an average of 47 hours a week, according to a 2014 Gallup poll. 1 in 5 American workers work through their lunch, while Republican lawmakers seemingly want to do away with retirement savings, meaning that we may all just work until we're dead. Which is an odd, Puritanical, and deeply troubling sentiment that some Americans are all too proud to crow about. With zero guaranteed maternity or paternity leave, American workers really are getting the short end of the stick.

It makes you wonder: are Perpetual Guardian hiring? Yes, they are.

Oh, you betcha that climate change is going to impact the internet | Big Think
Climate change’s impact on the internet July 22, 2018 at 03:27PM https://ift.tt/2uTRSXd

The underlying physical architecture of the internet is at risk due to the coming sea-level rise wrought by climate change. In a recently published paper from Paul Barford, Carol Barford, and Ramakrishnan Durairajan from the University of Madison-Wisconsin and the University of Oregon, the authors note that “4,067 miles of fiber conduit will be under water and 1,101 nodes (e.g., points of presence and colocation centers) will be surrounded by water in the next 15 years.”

That means that “communication infrastructure in New York, Miami, and Seattle, respectively, are at highest risk.” And though the authors are quick to note that “we find that the risks over longer time scales do not increase significantly,” that should not detract from the salient point that -- if no change is made in the next 15 years -- data centers (which house servers, routers, and other equipment), landing stations for underwater internet cables, and internet exchange points (which makes the querying process and process by which you receive information in return faster and more efficient) could be exposed to sufficient enough continual water damage that they could cease to function, nor should it distract from the variety of internet architecture that exists in different coastal communities. There are 43 data centers in New York City the study identifies -- but there are also 43 ‘long haul’ cables running through New Orleans that are worth ‘future-proofing’ as well (along with other areas of interest. (And, note: when you think of a ‘long haul’ cable, think of the telephone lines that cross the country that enable you to make a phone call from anywhere in the country -- but then switch that analogy over to the internet.))Current strategies to preserve communication architecture in the face of climate change includes -- per one of the paper’s recommendations -- potentially incorporating problematic networks into already existing infrastructure. The writers also see worth in checking to see what sort of impact something like a seawall can have on preserving the already existing infrastructure of the internet. Indeed, it does not seem to make sense to wait until the waters rise and cables fail and our only available path of response is to deploy cell on wheels and cell on light trucks as a way of ensuring that our communication networks remain secure. The expensive world of reactive ad hoc measures can be avoided if further steps are taken now.

Brett Kavanaugh questioned the Supreme Court's Nixon decision — Quartz
Trump’s Supreme Court pick questioned the Nixon decision. It could matter for Trump. July 22, 2018 at 01:58PM https://ift.tt/2LEOuGQ

Brett Kavanaugh, Donald Trump’s pick to replace Anthony Kennedy on the US Supreme Court, is a strong believer in the power of the presidency. So much so that he once wondered if the court erred in forcing former US president Richard Nixon to turn over the Watergate tapes.

Nixon was forced by a unanimous Supreme Court decision (pdf) in 1974 to turn over tape recordings from his offices that revealed he was involved in a cover-up tied to the Watergate break-in. Nixon resigned about two weeks later.

Kavanaugh might have made a different call. During a 1999 roundtable discussion with lawyers, Kavanaugh questioned whether the decision, which limited the president’s power to withhold information in a criminal trial, set the right precedent, the Associated Press (AP) reported.

“Maybe Nixon was wrongly decided—heresy though it is to say so,” Kavanaugh said during the discussion.

The AP reviewed a transcript of the roundtable that was published in a 1999 issue of the Washington Lawyer, which was submitted to the Senate Judiciary Committee along with other documents as part of the confirmation process. In the transcript, Kavanaugh said:

Nixon took away the power of the president to control information in the executive branch by holding that the courts had power and jurisdiction to order the president to disclose information in response to a subpoena sought by a subordinate executive branch official… Maybe the tension of the time led to an erroneous decision.

He reportedly reiterated that point three times during the discussion.

The remarks show how highly Kavanaugh values the authority of the executive branch, and how he might respond if Trump or another president were to find themselves in a similar position—for instance, if special counsel Robert Mueller were to subpoena Trump to testify on Russian meddling in the 2016 US election.

Air Force One is getting painted red, white, and blue — Quartz
Trump has ordered a new Air Force One and plans to paint it red, white, and blue July 22, 2018 at 12:40PM https://ift.tt/2my9LHr

Air Force One is getting a patriotic new paint job.

US president Donald Trump has ordered up a new Air Force One—two of them, actually—which he plans to have painted red, white, and blue, rather than the blue-and-white color scheme that has graced the president’s plane since John F. Kennedy was on board. Trump announced the new presidential aircraft in an interview with CBS last week.

“I said, ‘I wonder if we should use the same baby blue colors?’ And we’re not,” he said. “Red, white and blue… It’s gonna be the top of the line, the top in the world.”

The aircraft is expected to be delivered in 2024, Bloomberg reported. That means Trump will only get to enjoy it if he wins a second term. If someone else wins the 2020 election, they might choose a different paint job.

Boeing is developing the two 747 jumbo jets that will serve as Air Force One. The manufacturer inked a $3.9 billion contract to build the aircraft, according to Bloomberg. The deal was informally made in February and officially announced last Tuesday.

It comes after years of contract negotiations between Boeing and the US Air Force that runs the aircraft. Trump first inserted himself into the talks shortly before taking office in January 2017.

Boeing is building a brand new 747 Air Force One for future presidents, but costs are out of control, more than $4 billion. Cancel order!

The UK heatwave has turned the ground brown — Quartz
Satellite images reveal the true extent of damage the UK’s heatwave has caused July 22, 2018 at 11:15AM https://ift.tt/2mxNf1c

The United Kingdom and Ireland have been suffering unusually dry and hot weather for the past two months. It’s expected to be the longest heatwave since 1976.

In June, some regions in the UK received merely 6% of the expected rainfall. The upshot is scorched grass that’s visible from space (as the image above shows).

You can't help but have noticed the lack of rain in many areas over the last 10-12 weeks. It's even changed the way the UK looks from space! pic.twitter.com/T4Cjm8GMH3

— Met Office (@metoffice) July 18, 2018

Though some have welcomed the unusually warm and cloud-free weather as school holidays begin, many others are suffering. Northern Ireland instated a ban hosepipes and sprinklers in June. A similar ban is expected to come into effect in the northwest of England on Aug. 5. The heatwave has also been blamed for fires that raged across northwest England in June.

Updated Satellite images of Ireland showing the forty shades of green turning to shades of brown as #Drought continues with no rain in many areas since the 20th of June. Images from 24th June, 3rd and 10th of July during #Heatwave pic.twitter.com/EVqg9UbfSf

— Carlow Weather (@CarlowWeather) July 10, 2018

Met Office, the UK’s national weather service, has warned that the heatwave will continue for some time. It has also issued health warnings as some parts of the country could hit 34°C (about 93°F), breaking the 2018 record of 33°C (about 91°F) on June 28.

Human-caused climate change is expected to make such heatwaves more frequent, according to the Met Office. Expect more records to be broken.

KPMG survey of tech CEOs shows optimism for the future, fear of millennials - Business Insider
A new study shows that tech CEOs are optimistic about the future, even if they still don't understand millennials July 22, 2018 at 10:40AM https://ift.tt/2Lh33Er

Tech industry CEOs are bullish on the future of their companies, the sector, and artificial intelligence.

But they're worried about the spread of nationalism, cybersecurity — and millennials.

Those are some of the key takeaways from a new report by KPMG. After surveying more than 1,000 CEOs from all different sectors and from around the globe, the company zeroed in on the responses of 104 from the tech industry.

Compared with their non-tech peers, tech CEOs were more optimistic about their firms' prospects. But they were equally worried about the turn away from globalization and dealing with younger customers.

Here are some of the report's key findings.

SEE ALSO: Pandora is still alive after getting run over by Spotify and Apple, and the CEO says his comeback plan will open up another big business in music

Tech CEOs are bullish about their companies' growth prospects.

Some 88% of tech CEOs surveyed by KPMG said they were confident in their growth potential for their companies over the next three years. More than half — 52%, to be precise — said they expected their companies to grow by at least 2% a year over that time period.

That's more optimistic than CEOs as a whole. Overall, 44% of CEOs said they expected their firms to grow 2% annually over the next three years.

In fact, many expect to boost their headcount significantly in coming years.

Some 44% of tech CEOs expect to increase their employee base by at least 6% over the next three years, and 2% expect to increase it by at least 11%.

Again, tech leaders were more bullish than their peers. Overall, just 37% of CEOs from all industries expect to increase their headcount by at least 6% over that time period.

Tech CEOs are optimistic about their industry too.

According to the survey, 77% of tech CEOs were confident in the growth prospects of the industry over the next three years.

"Shazam" trailer: Warner Bros. is betting on a new kind of DC movie — Quartz
Warner Bros. is betting on a new kind of superhero movie with “Shazam” July 22, 2018 at 10:18AM https://ift.tt/2zWfLDk

Shazam could show a new side of Warner Bros.’s dark, gritty DC movie universe.

Warner Bros. dropped the first trailer for the upcoming film, due out in spring 2019, at San Diego Comic Con on Saturday.

Based on a comic book character, the movie follows foster teen Billy Batson as he’s granted super powers by an ancient wizard. By speaking the magic word, “shazam,” he morphs into a costume-clad, bulletproof adult, Captain Marvel, who has superhuman strength and other abilities. Unlike DC’s brooding heroes Batman and Superman, Batson appears to actually be enjoying his newfound powers.

The trailer invokes some the dark, gritty style director Zack Snyder set up for the DC extended universe that began with Man of Steel, now officially called the Worlds of DC. But it quickly abandons all of that to show the lighter, brighter side of being a superhero. Snyder, whose vision has defined much of the Worlds of DC thus far, doesn’t have a hand in this film. It’s directed by David Sandberg of Annabelle:Creation and stars Zachary Levi, best known for Chuck.

Since launching its DC movie universe in 2013, Warner Bros. has struggled to match the success of rival Marvel Studios, which has churned out hit after hit for a decade. Some DC movies, like Wonder Woman, were raving successes, but the majority, like Justice League, were duds. Shazam could open the DC movie-verse to new audiences.

Like Deadpool and Kick-Ass before it, it appears to be a refreshing entry into the genre that shows superhero movies don’t have to be so serious.

The Cute But Controversial Cat Breed That’s Gaining Popularity

By Emily | source:Here Jul 22nd, 2018

I thought I was a dog person until I saw a munchkin cat in real life — they’re cute beyond belief. What is a munchkin cat, and why are they controversial?
Also called “sausage cats” due to their hot dog-like appearance, these cuties were discovered in the early twentieth century and only recognized as an official breed in 2003. This was after a long time of discussion and controversy. The International Cat Association was reluctant at first: one of the judges even resigned, calling the new breed (and its breeders) an affront to any breeder with ethics because the cats are intentionally bred with genetic mutations.

Some people still stand by the opinion that Munchkins shouldn’t be bred. Munchkin lovers state that in contrast to their dog counterparts, the breed doesn’t suffer from chronic illness associated with their short legs. Unlike breeds like the Dachshund that are known for their back problems, Munchkins are as healthy as more conventional cat breeds.

Even so, the American Cat Fanciers Association and other European groups don’t consider the Munchkin a recognized breed. Studies show that Munchkins do showcase some diseases like lordosis and pectus excavatum (a condition when the breastbone sinks into the chest of the cat), but as other cat breeds also suffer from these, experts are still on the fence about whether or not these conditions are breeding-related or are just a normal occurrence like with other cats.

Even so, Munchkins are thought to be a generally healthy breed, and they usually live between 12 and 15 years. If you want a lifetime of fun with your furry friend, consider a Munchkin!

Born to run, I would spend all day running and surfing if I could. In the meantime I'll just chase dreams.

A Pokéball lets Harvard scientists study delicate sea creatures without harming them. — Quartz
Harvard researchers made an origami Pokéball that safely captures delicate sea creatures July 22, 2018 at 06:03AM https://ift.tt/2NzOp7X

Researchers at Harvard University have devised a real-life Pokéball, but it’s not to collect otherworldly creatures for battle. Instead, they’re working with marine biologists to capture little-studied sea creatures in a way that does not harm them.

Their cutting-edge technology is inspired by origami, and built with 3D-printed panels and soft edges to make sure marine animals don’t get hurt when the device closes around them. Watch the video above to see it in action, and hear the researchers explain how the design could be a breakthrough in ocean research.
