Jay Z-backed Ethos raises $35 million to simplify access to life insurance - ImpactAlpha
Jay Z-backed Ethos raises $35 million to simplify access to life insurance October 30, 2018 at 03:27PM https://ift.tt/2CQMqde

ImpactAlpha, October 30 – The San Francisco insurance tech company raised its Series B round led by venture capital firm Accel. Prior investors, including Jay Z’s venture capital firm Arrive, GV (previously Google Venture), and Sequoia Capital, also backed the round. The firm also raised an undisclosed amount of debt capital from Silicon Valley Bank.

Ethos operates an online platform to sell life insurance policies by life insurance company Assurity Life. Unlike most life insurance policies, where policy holders have to pay premiums indefinitely, the policies available through Ethos are term-life policies, which means policy holders only have to pay for a fixed period of time. The policies Ethos offers are therefore less expensive.

Applicants using Ethos platform can also be approved online in as little as 10 minutes. Most applications don’t require follow up medical exams as many other life policies do.

The company has raised $46 million since launching in 2016, TechCrunch reports.

Salesforce Ventures, Lumina Foundation and Robin Hood partner for workforce development - ImpactAlpha
Salesforce Ventures, Lumina Foundation and Robin Hood partner for workforce development October 30, 2018 at 03:20PM https://ift.tt/2OgAmnU

ImpactAlpha, October 30 – Salesforce Impact Fund, Robin Hood and Lumina Foundation are each putting up $5 million to back companies supporting adults with job retraining, equitable compensation, and inclusive work environments. The partnership will also invest in companies helping adults complete high school, learn math and science skills, and access higher education.

The investment initiative marks New York-based nonprofit Robin Hood’s first foray into impact investing. “The fight against poverty needs every weapon in our arsenal,” Robin Hood’s Wes Moore said in a statement. The organization has 30 years of experience and has committed $120 million to fighting poverty in New York City through legal services, housing, meals, workforce development training and education programs.

Salesforce Ventures is making its commitment as part of its $50 million impact fund, which launched last October. The fund has already made a couple of education and workforce investments, including RaiseMe and Guild. The $5 million commitment to the partnership with Lumina and Robin Hood is earmarked for new investments.

Indianapolis-based Lumina Foundation has an established track record in edtech and workforce-based impact investments. The foundation, which has its own impact fund, has backed ventures like literacy and workforce skills startup Cell-Ed and analytics company Cevitas Learning, as well as other funds, like New Markets Venture Partners’ second edtech fund.

Stop Initiative Overload
Stop Initiative Overload October 30, 2018 at 02:12PM https://ift.tt/2RqqeLo

Rose Hollister and Michael Watkins, consultants at Genesis Advisers, argue that many companies today are taking on too many initiatives. Each manager might have their own pet projects they want to focus on, but that trickles down to lower level workers dealing with more projects at a time that they can handle, or do well. This episode also offers practical tips for senior-level leaders to truly prioritize the best initiatives at their company — or risk losing some of their top talent. Hollister and Watkins are the authors of the HBR article “Too Many Projects.”

Total assets in public and private gender-lens products double to $4.65 billion - ImpactAlpha
Total assets in public and private gender-lens products double to $4.65 billion October 30, 2018 at 07:07AM https://ift.tt/2OfHqB4

Total assets in public and private gender-lens products double to $4.65 billion

Forest of Numbers by Emmanuelle Moureaux

Capital continues to move into investment vehicles betting on women.

Nearly three dozen publicly traded securities now hold $2.4 billion in investor capital, up 85% over last year, according to Veris Wealth Partners’ report on public gender-lens investment products.

Along with $2.25 billion in assets under management of private gender-lens funds (see, “More than two dozen new private gender-lens funds launched in 2018”), total gender-lens investing assets stand at $4.65 billion, up from $2.2 billion a year ago.

“The growth of gender lens investing is one of the most positive developments in a year overshadowed by the gender pay gap, lack of women on boards and sexual harassment scandals,” said Veris CEO Patricia Farrar-Rivas.

Institutional support. Pension fund investments into public gender-lens products have boosted growth. The Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System, for example, seeded RBC Global Asset Management’s RBC Vision Women’s Leadership ETF with $100 million in January. CalSTRS (California State Teachers’ Retirement System) earlier seeded State Street’s “SHE” ETF with $250 million.

Across asset classes. The set of public gender-lens vehicles includes 14 separately managed accounts, nine exchange traded funds, seven mutual funds, three gender equality bond issues, one exchange traded note, and one certificate of deposit (see, “Investment vehicles that benefit women are proliferating across asset classes”). Since January 2017, 16 new public gender-lens strategies have launched.

Resolution success. Since 2015, Pax World has filed or co-filed 14 shareholder resolutions on pay equity. Twelve companies have enhanced their pay equity disclosure, including Apple, eBay and Amazon, says the firm. In March, for example, Pax withdrew resolutions following commitments from Discover, HP and KeyCorp to close their gender pay gaps. (Oracle is an outlier, Pax World says.)

GSMA launches digital inclusion fund for Africa - ImpactAlpha
GSMA launches digital inclusion fund for Africa October 29, 2018 at 06:43PM https://ift.tt/2Suro9G

ImpactAlpha, October 29 – GSMA, the industry network for mobile operators, is using a grant-based fund to seed companies in Uganda and Ghana focused on digital inclusion, particularly for rural residents.

Recent GSMA research notes that countries with “high levels of mobile connectivity have made more progress in meeting their SDG commitments.” Rural areas often lag in connectivity because they are the most expensive to reach due to the infrastructure costs.

GSMA’s fund, called the Innovation Fund for Rural Connectivity, is looking to help “close coverage gaps in rural areas so that more citizens have access to life-enhancing mobile services.” It is specifically targeting businesses working in core digital infrastructure, like base station technology, energy and backhaul, as well as passive infrastructure, operation and maintenance, or which are testing sustainable business models.

DFID, the U.K. development agency, provided £300,000 ($390,000) for the fund.

Geltor raises $18.2 million for animal-free collagen - ImpactAlpha
Geltor raises $18.2 million for animal-free collagen October 29, 2018 at 06:36PM https://ift.tt/2zczESZ

ImpactAlpha, October 29 – California-based Geltor’s $18.2 million Series A funding round was led by agtech investor Cultivian Sandbox and backed by the venture funds of two global food and agriculture companies: Archer Daniels Midland and Wilbur Ellis. Global collagen supplier GELTIA also committed funding, along with a number of seed and early-stage venture funds.

Collagen is used in everything from cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food and nutritional supplements. Most collagen on the market is produced from animal bones, skin and tissue through a chemical process. Geltor is developing a technology that produces collagen products by using plant-based products instead of animal byproducts.

The deal is the latest in a trend towards “alternative” and animal-free protein, like vegetarian and lab-grown meat, or animal-free “dairy” products. It’s also the latest alternative protein deal to include large global companies that helped pioneer industrial meat and agriculture.

SEAF women’s fund backs education company Dream Viet Education - ImpactAlpha
SEAF women’s fund backs education company Dream Viet Education October 29, 2018 at 06:07PM https://ift.tt/2qkAg4R

ImpactAlpha, October 29 – Washington, D.C.-based impact investor SEAF has invested an undisclosed amount in Vietnamese online education provider Dream Viet Education.

Dream Viet Education operates two platforms—Kyna and Kyna for Kids. Kyna offers training courses for adults and parents on everything from soft work skills to parenting instruction, while Kyna for Kids offers school-aged kids lessons in English and mathematics. In total, Dream Viet Education has developed and published 560 courses.

SEAF, which stands for Small Enterprise Assistance Funds, made the investment through its Women’s Opportunity Fund, a partnership with the Australian government’s Investing in Women initiative. The fund invests $1 million to $2.5 million in women-led businesses in the Philippines, Vietnam and Indonesia.

SEAF views the investment in Dream Viet Education as an impact play in women’s economic empowerment because the company provides “training and education for busy working mothers.” In March, the Women’s Opportunity Fund fund backed another Vietnamese company: maternal and infant care center Phuong Chau.

Women are increasingly supporting our families financially. It can feel empowering to be the sole or primary earner, but many of us feel pressure to be both an ideal worker and an ideal mother. We hear from a woman who supports a stay-at-home husband and three sons.

Then, Alyson Byrne fills us in about the research on women as financial providers — for example, the more we financially contribute, the better our psychological well-being. (Yay.) She has tips on managing the professional side and the personal side of being the chief breadwinner. And Maureen Hoch, Women at Work’s supervising editor, shares her experience of being her family’s primary earner.

Guest:

Alyson Byrne is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Business Administration at Memorial University of Newfoundland.

When Companies Should Invest in Training Their Employees — and When They Shouldn’t
When Companies Should Invest in Training Their Employees — and When They Shouldn’t October 29, 2018 at 11:12AM https://ift.tt/2CN7Ism

Photodisc/Getty Images

According to one industry report, U.S. companies spent over $90 billion dollars on training and development activities in 2017, a year-over-year increase of 32.5 %. While many experts emphasize the importance and benefits of employee development — a more competitive workforce, increased employee retention, and higher employee engagement — critics point to a painful lack of results from these investments. Ultimately, there is truth in both perspectives. Training is useful at times but often fails, especially  when it is used to address problems that it can’t actually solve.

Many well-intended leaders view training as a panacea to obvious learning opportunities or behavioral problems. For example, several months ago, a global financial services company asked me to design a workshop to help their employees be less bureaucratic and more entrepreneurial. Their goal was to train people to stop waiting around for their bosses’ approval, and instead, feel empowered to make decisions on their own. They hoped, as an outcome, decisions would be made faster. Though the company seemed eager to invest, a training program was not the right way to introduce the new behavior they wanted their employees to learn.

Aqua-Spark backs CageEye to improve fish farm management - ImpactAlpha
Aqua-Spark backs CageEye to improve fish farm management October 26, 2018 at 06:46PM https://ift.tt/2PstwjG

ImpactAlpha, October 26 – Oslo-based CageEye makes sensors that monitor salmon farms by tracking fish movements. The information allows fish farmers to improve decision-making and automate tasks like feeding, which improves efficiency and reduces costs. (Feed is the biggest input cost for aquaculture operations.)

Sustainable seafood venture fund Aqua-Spark has invested an undisclosed amount in the company, providing capital for additional research and development.

CageEye is Aqua-Spark’s 16th investment. The Dutch impact investor has €49.2 million ($56.2 million) under management, and aims to grow 30-fold to €1.5 billion by 2025.

Novastar raises $72.5 million to expand startup investing to West Africa October 26, 2018 at 06:32PM https://ift.tt/2OTazqM

ImpactAlpha, October 26 – Nairobi-based venture capital firm Novastar reached a first close for its second fund, which will invest in early and growth stage enterprises in East and West Africa.

Asset management firm AXA Investment Managers backed the fund through its second impact fund of funds, AXA Impact Fund II. European development finance institutions CDC Group, European Investment Bank, Dutch Good Growth Fund and FMO also participated.

Novastar is looking to raise $120 million to provide African businesses addressing demand for basic goods and services, particularly for low-income households. “Our vision is to see sub-Saharan Africa populated with a growing number of high-capacity entrepreneurs building innovative businesses that serve the common good,” Novastar’s Steve Beck said. The hope is that its early capital will unlock follow on funding for African entrepreneurs.

Novastar raised and invested $80 million along with a $10 million co-investment facility for its first fund, which supported 10 companies. With the new fund, Novastar is opening an office in Lagos.

It’s the year 2030. Climate change has slowed. Inequality is falling. The future is looking bright.

Back in 2018, photographer Kelly Pendergrast and I beat the pavement at Fort Mason to ask SOCAP18’s best-dressed: What happened that year to turn the tide?

“We had critical conversations with heart.” – Shuyin Tang, Patamar Capital

“The best minds came together to make the right investments in biofuels and carbon-free energy which drove systems change at every level.” –  Darsh Mann, Stanford U. Graduate School of Business

“We burnt capitalism down.” – Kesha Cash, Melissa Plotsky and Yusill Scribner, Impact America Fund

“Investors woke up and invested in for real change, not just wealth.” – Jeff Cyr, Raven Capital Partners

“We realized the power lies in us.” – Jorgen Bo, Native

“An end of silos and a beginning of collaborative partnerships!” – Michael Ibonye and Pumla Maswanganyi, Boabab Consulting

“The compost and recycling bins at SOCAP18 were overflowing and we realized that if we do without garbage at SOCAP, we could change the tide on everything.” – Qianhui Chia, BLOCK71 San Francisco

“An increased focus on gender lens investing acknowledging power, prejudice and bias.” – Stephanie Kimber, innovationXchange

“If was at SOCAP that we found ways to bridge strangers and unlikely allies, to understand community problems from all perspectives, at a deep level, and create solutions with community.” – Yassanna Nouri

“I was crying for (a) change and it inspired adults to unmake their mess.” – Björn Dilley, with mama (me!) Maura Dilley, Circular Economy Consulting

Survey: Tell Us About Your Workplace Relationships
Survey: Tell Us About Your Workplace Relationships October 25, 2018 at 11:04AM https://ift.tt/2qbJAba

Richard Morrell/Getty Images

Research has found that employees are more likely to flourish at work when they have high quality workplace relationships with people from diverse backgrounds. These relationships can contribute to greater trust, facilitate information sharing, and engender positive emotional connections. Taken together, this can lead to increased productivity and reduced turnover.

There’s still a lot we don’t know about these connections, however. How often do they occur? Between whom? And what can better facilitate them? We’re trying to dig deeper, and we need your help. This survey, which takes approximately 10 minutes to complete, is the first step. We’d love to hear from you, and we’ll share what we learn both on this site and via an episode of the new season of HBR’s Women at Work podcast. You can also stay up to date by including your email address in the survey itself. All responses, of course, are anonymous.

We also wanted to let you know that this survey may be a bit different than ones you’re used to coming from HBR. It asks a series of questions about your personal relationships and activities both inside and outside of work, as well as some questions about you. We want to make sure we receive enough feedback from you in order to contribute to the literature on workplace relationships — and to help managers and employees better understand how to cultivate them. Thank you so much for being a part of what we hope is a project that will change work for the better.

Take the survey.

PepsiCo Foundation anchors Circulate Capital initiative to fight ocean plastic - ImpactAlpha
PepsiCo Foundation anchors Circulate Capital initiative to fight ocean plastic October 25, 2018 at 07:07AM https://ift.tt/2EHJlyQ

ImpactAlpha, October 24 – PepsiCo Foundation has committed $15 million to an investment initiative by Circulate Capital, an investment firm that launched in July to combat the global ocean plastic problem. Circulate Capital is looking to make debt, equity and quasi-equity investments in recycling and waste management ventures in India, Indonesia, and other Asian markets.

Circulate Capital is a spin-off of Closed Loop Partners, which invests in U.S.-based recycling initiatives and technologies. Circulate’s founder, Rob Kaplan, told ImpactAlpha that the impetus for the initiative was companies looking for similar investment opportunities in emerging markets, particularly Asia, where half of the plastic that ends up in the ocean comes from only five countries.

The philanthropic arm of PepsiCo, which also backs Closed Loop Partners, provided early support to Circulate Capital’s founding team as it was conducting a feasibility study for a similar investment thesis geared towards emerging markets. Its new commitment to Circulate’s investing initiative was the first capital in the door.

“Never have I seen an environmental topic explode onto the public mainstream psyche like the plastic waste crisis has in the last 18 months,” PepsiCo’s Roberta Barbieri told ImpactAlpha.

Barbieri, who works for PepsiCo proper rather than its foundation, adds that the company’s evolution on the issue and motivation to steer away from single-use plastics mirrors the public’s growing awareness and concern. “It’s as much about [business] risk mitigation as much as environmental protection. This is one issue where the two coincide really well.”

Circulate’s portfolio approach will be different from Closed Loop Partners to reflect the different needs and market gaps in emerging markets. “In the U.S. and Europe, municipalities own waste management; in emerging markets, it’s the informal sector that manages most of the waste,” Kaplan says. “There’s also a leapfrogging opportunity. In the U.S., [we’re doing] waste and recycling with legacy systems. In Asia, there’s an opportunity to build new value chains out of waste streams.”

Circulate Capital is expecting $90 million in commitments from corporate backers, including Procter & Gamble, Dow, Danone, Unilever, and Coca-Cola in addition to PepsiCo.

The four “missing middles” among small and growing businesses - ImpactAlpha
The four “missing middles” among small and growing businesses October 25, 2018 at 06:32AM https://ift.tt/2PorFMM

The financing gap for small businesses around the world is a yawning $940 billion. A new Collaborative for Frontier Finance is trying to tackle the problem by breaking it into segments.

The collaborative’s early work is to identify breakthrough financing strategies for high-growth and niche ventures as well as “dynamic” enterprises in bread-and-butter industries and livelihood-sustaining enterprises in the formal or informal economies, including family-run businesses.

“We’re not making progress fast enough,” Omidyar Network’s Chris Jurgens said in announcing the effort at SOCAP18. “Millions of businesses are not making impact and billions of dollars is sitting on the sidelines.”

Small-and-growing businesses are defined as business seeking between $20,000 and $2 million in working capital, capital improvements or growth capital. They fall into the “missing middle” because they are too big for microfinance but too small for private equity, too staid for venture capital and too risky for banks (see, “Emerging-markets impact investors turn away from small businesses, at their peril”)

The consortium, founded by the Dutch Good Growth Fund and the infoDev unit of the World Bank, along with Omidyar, will convene practitioners to explore alternative capital structures (think quasi equity and revenue-sharing) and lending products (mezzanine debt) and new financial technology to evaluate risk and lower transaction costs. Other backers of the consortium include Australia’s DFAT and the Argidius, MacArthur and Small foundations.

Moringa backs Ghanan agribusiness company B-BOVID - ImpactAlpha
Moringa backs Ghanan agribusiness company B-BOVID October 24, 2018 at 08:43PM https://ift.tt/2JfEGmd

European impact investment firm Moringa has made its first investment in Ghana with $5 million for agribusiness company B-BOVID.

B-BOVID works with small farmers to teach sustainable farming practices, particularly for palm oil production.

Farming palm fruits, which are harvested and processed into oil for a wide range of consumer products, is a culprit in global deforestation. B-BOVID has provided sustainable farming training to more than 2,000 small farmers. It then sources the farmers’ product and processes it into oil.

Moringa, a €84 million ($96 million) investment fund, makes equity investments of €4 million to €10 million in sustainable agroforestry projects in Latin America and Africa. Its investment in B-BOVID will support the expansion of B-BOVID’s farmer training program, which aims to reach 4,000 farmers and students. The funding will also be used to upgrade B-BOVID’s manufacturing plant and expand production capacity.

Last year, Moringa backed Brazilian farming business Florestra Viva to support its expansion and build new production facilities.
