For sustainable investors, expectations of returns and adoption go hand in hand

To be young, wealthy and sitting in emerging markets… means to dig sustainable investing.

A new UBS survey of 5,300 investors in ten global markets shows a clear link between views on returns and uptake of sustainable investments (UBS includes both exclusion and integration of ESG strategies, as well as impact investing in its definition of sustainable investing).

Investors in China (60%), Brazil (53%) and the United Arab Emirates (53%) are more likely to say they own sustainable investments than investors in the U.K. (20%) and the U.S. (12%).

The survey also found the majority of investors surveyed in China, Brazil and the UAE expect outperformance from sustainable investments. In the U.K. and U.S.: just 27% and 19% of investor expect sustainable investments to outperform.

“Sustainable investments benefit the investor and bring positive influence on the society,” one Chinese investor in his mid-thirties told UBS. “They help optimize an investment portfolio.”

Some other tidbits:

The abstainers: Nearly three-quarters of investors not yet making sustainable investments say it’s hard to know the impact of investments. A full 60% say they’ve never been offered a sustainable investment.

The levers: Financial advisors, more so than family and friends, influenced nine in 10 sustainable investors make their first bet.

The young and wealthy… means to dig sustainable investing. Investors between ages 18 and 34 and those with more than $50 million in assets say more than half of their wealth in invested sustainably. Both groups are bullish on sustainable investment returns.

Bloomberg selects Seattle and Atlanta for climate-challenge accelerator - ImpactAlpha
Bloomberg selects Seattle and Atlanta for climate challenge accelerator September 19, 2018 at 06:19PM https://ift.tt/2Ddm2fB

ImpactAlpha, September 19 – The $70 million Bloomberg climate challenge seeks to promote sustainability and climate change awareness in 20 American cities. Seattle and Atlanta are the first two winners of the challenge, and will join a two-year acceleration program providing access and resources to meet short-term carbon reduction goals. Each city is eligible for up $2.5 million from Bloomberg Philanthropies.

Seattle will use the funding to achieve energy efficiency and reach other sustainability goals by 2030. Atlanta will use the support to promote an affordable, resilient and equitable city for all residents by 2020.

The climate challenge is part of Bloomberg’s American Cities Initiative. Michael Bloomberg, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Climate Action and former mayor of New York City, launched the $200 million initiative following pres. Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement.

The challenge is designed to help mayors reach climate goals, Michael Bloomberg said. “We were looking for cities with ambitious and realistic plans to cut emissions in ways that improve people’s lives, and mayors committed to getting the job done,” he said.

The Meloy Fund closes $22 million for sustainable fisheries - ImpactAlpha
The Meloy Fund closes $22 million for sustainable fisheries September 19, 2018 at 06:05PM https://ift.tt/2Dd0TlA

ImpactAlpha, September 19 – The Meloy Fund, managed by conservation organization Rare, raised $5 million from FMO to reach a final close of $22 million. It puts the fund slightly ahead of the $20 million Rare hoped to raise when it launched last year.

Rare developed the fund around a mission to supporting sustainable coastal fisheries—both in terms of ecological and livelihood impact—in Indonesia and the Philippines. It’s one of a handful of impact funds trying to drive private sector investment in improving seafood sustainability.

The Meloy Fund made its first investment in December 2016, before fundraising officially launched, investing $1 million in Manila-based fish processor and distributor Meliomar. It then reached a $10 million first close in mid-2017, led by the Walton Family Foundation.

Meliomar is still the only investment The Meloy Fund  has publicly announced and listed in its portfolio.

LISC launches small-business venture to lend in all 50 U.S. states - ImpactAlpha
LISC launches small-business venture to lend in all 50 U.S. states September 19, 2018 at 05:58PM https://ift.tt/2MNM9cu

ImpactAlpha, September 19 – A growing number of financial instruments are targeting the 80% of businesses that are underserved by traditional debt and venture capital.

The latest is from the Local Initiatives Support Corp., or LISC, which is launching a new small business lending initiative that will roll out in all 50 U.S. states.

The new initiative, called immito (which is Latin for “to launch or send forth”), aims to issue $100 million in loans annually to small businesses in under-invested communities. “Nothing catalyzes opportunity in a community like new businesses launching and expanding,” said LISC’s Maurice Jones in a statement. Immito will focus in particular on sectors that have strong job creation and growth potential, like small manufacturing.

Immito is being established as a non-bank Small Business Administration lender, operated by LISC. It will be one of only 14 such licensed businesses in the U.S.

LISC already invests about $1 billion per year through its various activities, like affordable housing lending and property rehabilitation financing. It is also planning to leverage its 40-year track record in low-income community investment and engagement to raise a series of opportunity funds.

Immito, meanwhile, marks a significant geographic expansion for LISC, which has more than 30 sites and reaches 1,400 counties in 44 states.

Podcast: Open Road Alliance Helps Nonprofits Address What Can Go Wrong September 19, 2018 at 02:08PM https://ift.tt/2xyIYQn

This week’s Business of Giving features Maya Winkelstein, executive director of Open Road Alliance, which aims to bring conversations about risk to the forefront in philanthropy. Seventy-six percent of grant makers the organization interviewed said they do not ask charities at any time during their application process what could go wrong with the projects they’re seeking funds for. The organization makes grants and loans to nonprofits facing risk or unanticipated shortfalls that threaten a project’s impact.

How to Retain and Engage Your B Players
How to Retain and Engage Your B Players September 19, 2018 at 10:15AM https://ift.tt/2xofnKd

Peter Dazeley/Getty Images

We’ve heard for decades that we should only hire A players, and should even try to cut non-A players from our teams. But not only do the criteria for being an A player vary significantly by company, it’s unrealistic to think you can work only with A players. Further, as demonstrated by Google’s Aristotle project, a study of what makes teams effective, this preference for A players ignores the deep value that the people you may think of as B players actually provide.

As I’ve seen in companies of all sizes and industries, stars often struggle to adapt to the culture, and may not collaborate well with colleagues. B players, on the other hand, are often less concerned about their personal trajectories, and are more likely to go above and beyond in order to support customers, colleagues, and the reputation of the business. For example, when one of my clients went through a disastrous changeover from one enterprise resource planning system to another, it was someone perceived as a B player who kept all areas of the business informed as she took personal responsibility for ensuring that every transaction and customer communication was corrected.

How can you support your B players to be their best and contribute the most possible, rather than wishing they were A players? Consider these five approaches to stop underestimating your B players and help them to reach their potential.

Get to know and appreciate them as the unique individuals they are. This is the first step to drawing out their hidden strengths and skills. Learn about their personal concerns, preferences, and the way they see and go about their work. Be sure you’re not ignoring them because they’re introverts, remote workers, or don’t know how to be squeaky wheels. A senior leader I worked with had such a strong preference for extroverts that she ignored or downgraded team members who were just going about their business.

Insuring the world’s small farmers to boost incomes and food security - ImpactAlpha
Insuring the world’s small farmers to boost incomes and food security September 19, 2018 at 06:30AM https://ift.tt/2piT7gi

Fewer than one in five smallholder farmers have agricultural insurance. Some 270 million small farmers in developing countries require coverage for about $80 billion in farm inputs (and even more for their labor and harvest value). That represents an annual premium value of between $8 billion and $15 billion, according to a landscape analysis from ISF Advisors (formerly the Initiative for Smallholder Finance).

Risking prosperity. Small farmers on small plots are subject to health shocks, market fluctuations, severe weather and pests. Such risks limit income and economic advancement by causing farmers to underinvest in their own productivity, including in seeds, mechanization and irrigation. “Without adequate access to financial services— both credit and risk-management options— farmers simply do not make these investments,” write the authors.

Swiss-based Pula is among the companies tapping the large, and largely unserved, market for smallholder-friendly agricultural insurance. Backed by Accion Venture Lab, Omidyar Network and a half dozen other investors, Pula has insured more than 600,000 small farmers in Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Nigeria, Ethiopia and Malawi for their seeds, fertilizer, credit and other farm inputs. Automatic payments are based on satellite and yield data.

New models. Advancements in tech, data and computer modeling are eliminating the costs of in-person farm visits by shifting to index-based products based on weather, satellite and area-yield data. Caveat: These new products “can be limited by their reliance on technology and skills that are difficult or impossible to access in some geographies.”

California Clean Energy Fund invests in Indian solar through cKers Finance

California gov. Jerry Brown speaks during a news conference | Photo by The Nation

The California Clean Energy Fund has made a $3 million commitment to Delhi-based cKers through its Sustainable Energy Bond.

India is trying to build 40-gigawatts of solar power by 2022. cKers, which launched last year, offers financing for small, decentralized renewable power projects in India.

Capital raised through the bond will be used to support both residential and commercial pay-as-you-go solar, micro- and mini-grids, and new energy service company models. The additional capital it raises will count among the more than $1.5 billion the nonprofit California Clean Energy Fund has leveraged towards renewable energy in its home state and globally.

How Companies Get Creativity Right (and Wrong)
How Companies Get Creativity Right (and Wrong) September 18, 2018 at 03:05PM https://ift.tt/2No5eac

Beth Comstock, the first female vice chair at General Electric, thinks companies large and small often approach innovation the wrong way. They either try to throw money at the problem before it has a clear market, misallocate resources, or don’t get buy in from senior leaders to enact real change. Comstock spent many years at GE – under both Jack Welsh’s and Jeffrey Immelt’s leadership – before leaving the company late last year. She’s the author of the book Imagine It Forward: Courage, Creativity, and the Power of Change.

UBS Optimus Foundation leads Indian education impact bond expansion - ImpactAlpha
UBS Optimus Foundation leads Indian education impact bond expansion September 17, 2018 at 07:20PM https://ift.tt/2PM8Z6q

ImpactAlpha, September 17 – The philanthropic arm of Swiss bank UBS is fronting $3 million for a development impact bond, or DIB, to support education for 300,000 children in India. The Dell Foundation and the British Asian Trust have joined the initiative as “outcome funders,” who will repay UBS Optimus, with interest, if the program is successful.

Nearly all school-aged kids are enrolled in school in India, but most don’t read at grade level, and only 30% can do basic math. The private sector in India – early edtech startups, low-cost private schools, and philanthropists and investors – has been testing and trying to scale learning models that can improve education access and quality for India’s schoolchildren.

The new impact bond, dubbed the Quality Education India DIB, aims to build on the success of a similar program that UBS Optimus Foundation funded three years ago. The foundation fronted $270,000 to nonprofit Educate Girls to improve girls’ school enrollment and education quality in Rajasthan. Earlier this year, the project was declared a success by surpassing both enrollment and learning targets; UBS’s investment was repaid—plus a return—by the project’s backer, the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation.

The DIB’s focus will be on improving literacy and numeracy for 300,000 students in Delhi and Gujarat over the next four years. The UBS Optimus Foundation is providing $3 million in working capital to three local organizations—Gyan Shala, Kaivalya Education Foundation and Society for All Round Development—to implement their education programs. Outcome targets have not been announced; but if the program reaches the pre-determined targets, UBS will be repaid, annually, and could earn as much as a 6% return.

Outcome funders include lead backer, the Dell Foundation, and a consortium of other supporters convened by the British Asian Trust: Tata Trusts, Comic Relief, the Mittal Foundation, and BT. The outcome funders have contributed $11 million for the DIB and hope it will serve as a foundation for raising additional capital in the coming years to expand the program.

In addition to this initiative and the original girls’ education DIB in Rajasthan, UBS Optimus Foundation has backed a $3.5 million DIB, also in Rajasthan, to improve maternal health.

Egypt’s FreshSource raises seed funds to link farmers to markets - ImpactAlpha
Egypt’s FreshSource raises seed funds to link farmers to markets September 17, 2018 at 07:12PM https://ift.tt/2xm5752

ImpactAlpha, September 17 – The Cairo-based agtech company is trying to boost farmer incomes, cut unnecessary costs, and improve the environmental footprint of Egypt’s agricultural markets. It has secured an undisclosed amount of seed funding from Egypt-focused venture investor HIMangel.

FreshSource launched last year to connect small farmers to urban produce buyers. “Extremely long and inefficient value chains contribute to significant food loss as well as heightened prices to the end consumer,” FreshSource’s Farah Emara said. The company buys farmers’ produce supply directly, and coordinates all of the delivery logistics, cutting out middlemen. FreshSource also provides technical support to farmers. Its hope is that the approach will help help farmers get a better purchase price, reduce end prices for consumers, and reduce food loss.

Companies like Twiga in Kenya, Agruppa in Colombia, and Doodhwala and Waycool in India have all developed similar models to support small farmers and improve food chain efficiency.

FreshSource is working with 50 vendors and more than a dozen farmers. With the seed funding, it intends to build an online platform to manage its operations.

Climate Fund Managers invests $50 million in Singapore’s Cleantech Solar - ImpactAlpha
Climate Fund Managers invests $50 million in Singapore’s Cleantech Solar September 17, 2018 at 07:05PM https://ift.tt/2PLWHuI

ImpactAlpha, September 17 – Climate Fund Managers, a Dutch climate-focused investment firm, has made a $50 million equity investment to support Cleantech Solar’s expansion in Asia.

Cleantech Solar, based in Singapore, partners with companies on large-scale rooftop solar installations. It has installed 120 systems in India, Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam and Singapore totalling 200-megawatts. The funding from Climate Fund Managers will enable Cleantech Solar to more than double its installed capacity.

Climate Fund Managers, a partnership between Dutch development bank FMO and South Africa’s Sanlam Infraworks, made the investment from its Climate Investor One fund. The fund was incubated by the Global Innovation Lab for Climate Finance as a financing tool to fund renewable energy projects in emerging markets. It has raised $535 million.

Women are expected and asked to do thankless tasks — order lunch, handle less-valued clients — more than men, and research shows that doing those tasks slows down our career advancement and makes us unhappy at work. We talk about why we wind up with so much office drudgery and how to get some of it off our plates. Guests: Lise Vesterlund and Ruchika Tulshyan.

Could you take notes? Would you mind ordering lunch? We need someone to organize the off-site event — can you do that? Whether you’ve just started your career or are the CEO of the company, if you’re a woman, people expect you to do routine, time-consuming tasks that no one else wants to do.

We talk with University of Pittsburgh economics professor Lise Vesterlund about why women get stuck with — even volunteer for! — tasks that won’t show off our skills or get us promoted, and how that slows down our career advancement and makes us unhappy at work. Women of color are asked to do more low-promotability projects, and we talk with inclusion strategist Ruchika Tulshyan about how they can say no. Lise and Ruchika tell us how they’ve handled these kinds of requests and what managers can do to assign work fairly.

Guests:

Lise Vesterlund is the Andrew W. Mellon Professor of Economics at the University of Pittsburgh. She is also a research associate with the National Bureau of Economic Research.

Ruchika Tulshyan is the author of The Diversity Advantage: Fixing Gender Inequality in the Workplace and the founder of Candour, an inclusion strategy firm. She is also adjunct faculty at Seattle University.

Beautycounter, HP, J&J Show Path to Chemical, Material Health Through Chemical Footprint Project | Sustainable Brands
Beautycounter, HP, J&J Show Path to Chemical, Material Health Through Chemical Footprint Project September 17, 2018 at 09:42AM https://ift.tt/2xp9SKh

Signatories of the Chemical Footprint Project — companies across a range of industries with $2.78 trillion in assets under management and over $700 billion in purchasing power — are asking their stakeholders: Where are you on your chemicals management journey? Are you participating in the CFP Survey? What are your CFP Survey answers?

“Leadership in chemical and material health is participating in the CFP Survey,” highlighted Dr. Mark S. Rossi, Executive Director of Clean Production Action and co-founder of CFP.

The CFP Survey provides a replicable, independent and comparable framework for leading brands to report their organization’s progress towards environmentally sound chemicals management. Findings from the 3rd Annual Report reveal rising performance across the four pillars of the Survey:

Management Strategy: Creating and making public comprehensive chemicals management policies that state the position of the organization and senior management towards chemical and material health — companies achieved 67 percent of possible points for corporate policies in 2017 (up from 42 percent in in 2015).

Chemical Inventory: Collecting full chemical ingredient information from suppliers — that is, all chemicals, not just Chemicals of High Concern (CoHCs) or restricted substances lists (RSLs) — 84 percent of 2017 Survey respondents collected full chemical ingredient information for some of their products (up from 63 percent in 2015).

Footprint Measurement: Calculating chemical footprint. Chemical footprinting establishes the foundation for setting quantitative goals and measuring progress away from CoHCs to safer solutions — 75 percent of 2017 Survey respondents calculated their chemical footprint (up from 29 percent in 2015). Respondents to the 2017 Survey reported reducing 42 million pounds of CoHCs in products.

Disclosure & Verification: Making CFP Survey responses and scores publicly available. The signatories opening the door to their chemicals management journey are Beautycounter, BD, Case Medical, GOJO Industries, Humanscale, Levi Strauss & Co., Milliken & Company, Naturepedic, Radio Flyer, Seagate Technology and Seventh Generation.

For details on the CFP Survey and 3rd Annual Report, go to www.chemicalfootprint.org.

Streamline Your Impact with SDGs, Impact Management Project and Theory Of Change
Streamline Your Impact with SDGs, Impact Management Project and Theory Of Change September 16, 2018 at 12:36AM https://ift.tt/2MABYrN

Did you know that 62% of companies mentioned the SDGs in their reporting, 37% of companies selected priority SDGs, 79% of companies that prioritized the SDGs chose SDG 13 Climate Action, 28% of companies set quantitative targets and linked these to societal impact? (Source: SDG Reporting Challenge 2017) In other words, many companies are starting to align with UN SDG Goals, but are they moving beyond simple impact washing? While there are multiple impact frameworks, standards, and tools available today, most organizations are still struggling to understand and communicate their impact.

Jeff Bezos pledges $2 billion to build preschools and fight homelessness - ImpactAlpha
Jeff Bezos pledges $2 billion to build preschools and fight homelessness September 14, 2018 at 10:58AM https://ift.tt/2QstDcF

With a tweet, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos pledged $2 billion of his estimated net worth of $163 billion to the Bezos Day 1 Fund, which will back existing nonprofits that help homeless families and create a new network of nonprofit preschools in underserved communities. (No seed capital for “a new generation of makers, creators, and doers.” Sorry, Ross Baird!).

The Day 1 Families Fund plans leadership awards to needle-moving organizations sheltering and feeding young families without a home. The Day 1 Academies Fund, Bezos said, would launch a network of Montessori-style preschools in low-income neighborhoods.

“The child will be the customer,” he said. In a tweet that went viral, CNN economy reporter Lydia DePillis asked “Is this better than just taxing the wealth of the richest man in the world, and making that money democratically accountable?”

Alibaba’s Ja Mack (net worth: $36 billion) said last week he is stepping down to focus on education. “I will learn from Bill Gates, Warren Buffett and a lot of great philanthropists in the world, but I want to do something using my own way,” Ma told Bloomberg.

Gates (net worth: $96 billion) and Buffett (net worth: $89 billion) have pledged to give away at least half of their wealth. Bezos and Ma have not made the Giving Pledge.
