Dropbox is big enough to move off of Amazon's cloud to its own servers. It optimizes those for its use case, even using custom-built hardware. Their testing continued until they hit 180 days w/o a bug. They re-wrote the software in Rust, not Go.

Dropbox proposes to build a new Python implementation. It'll use LLVM as a back-end and will try different JIT techniques than PyPy uses. Personally, I think it's unlikely to be successful -- but I welcome the attempt.

He put his grandfather's memoirs on dropbox. Now they're backed up (even if the computer dies). Better yet, he can see them and say "I saw you wrote 2 more pages today". This makes grandpa feel like the effort isn't wasted.

A VC: There Will Be No Files In The Cloud
Interesting thought: eventually we'll deal with documents that completely live in the cloud and then we won't have "files" anymore, just documents that can reference each other. I'm not sure I agree, but it's an interesting thought.
