Companies that get paid by government to bring jobs are renegotiating
They requested records on publicly announced contracts where government pays money to a company to create new jobs. Many requests we're squelched by the companies. Also, many had later been "renegotiated" for fewer jobs.

Python gets a new governance model [LWN.net]
Python put in place a new policy on government (this replaces the BDFL). From what I can tell it was well-considered and a wise choice.

Contra Robinson On Public Food | Slate Star Codex
Capitalism, government, ALL systems have a failure mode where the forces of competition are more significant than the good intentions. The best solution is to "find a couple of elegant systems that all optimize along different criteria approximately aligned with human happiness, pit them off against each other in a structure of checks and balances, hope they screw up in different places, [...] keep enough individual free choice around that people can exit any system that gets too terrible, and let cultural evolution do the rest."

Another Major Scandal At The Copyright Office: $25 Million 'Fake Budget' Line Item | Techdirt
The registrar of copyrights is appointed by the president, but supervised by the librarian of congress. Apparently the previous holder of this post was terrible: doing things like submitting 1/3 of their budget as made-up numbers. With no firing authority, the librarian of congress could do nothing.

Tech nerds are smart. But they can't seem to get their heads around politics. - Vox
This is the best article on American politics that I have read in a long time. It exposes some common misunderstandings like "both parties are extreme and the sensible people are in the middle" (untrue!). Republicans are ideological and anti-government; Democrats are coalition of interests with political weaknesses; no one is in the middle.

Schneier on Security: Today I Briefed Congress on the NSA
Unbelievable. Six members of Congress interviewed Bruce Schneier (who has seen the Snowden papers) because they can't learn what they need to know from the NSA.

Entangled in red tape, Redbox eyes Internet with longing
This is why overregulation is a problem. Redbox can't set up kiosks without attend hundreds of local planning meetings and doing things like conforming with color schemes. On the internet they could just offer whatever they wanted.

The Sunday Herald - Scotland's award-winning independent newspaper
Astonishing. The secrecy around certain military items like a nuclear weapons program is so severe that they accidentally lose the blueprints and can't reproduce one of the steps in the process.

The Patry Copyright Blog: Secret Government Part III
Patry points out that the government doesn't HAVE to negotiate the ACTA agreement in secret, they choose to. And for the US at least, that leaves out important branches of government -- as well as leaving no room for public input.
