Dungeons and Dragons Online: behold the power of free - Ars Technica
D&D online MMORPG languishes for years at $15/month for subscriptions. They re-tune it to be offered for free, with subscriptions giving advantages and the option to purchase in-game stuff. The participation rate skyrockets. More people (in absolute terms) are subscribers now, and many non-subscribers are buying more than $15/month of stuff too. Is this a model for other expensive online services?

User Generated Quests and the Ruby Slippers » Elder Game: MMO game development
A game such as a MMORPG with user-generated content will always fail, because the users will *always* choose minimaxing over good content. I'm not sure I'm willing to believe it, but then that's exactly what the article predicts I would say.
