Pre-virtualization: soft layering for virtual machines (PDF)
When doing virtualization, the original way was to have an emulated machine that runs the guest OS. This was slow so they invented paravirtualization: they rewrite bits of the guest OS so it can interface effectively with the host VM. But that was a lot of work. This proposes an approach which is about as fast but doesn't require so much careful rewriting of the guest OS.
