Peter van Agtmael’s Eye on America - The New York Times
“There’s this pressure that war can be a shortcut to becoming a man that was appealing,” he explained. “I understood war was screwed up, but I also liked the idea of being respected for bravery,” he said, adding, “along with other dark and immature reasons.”

In his early stints, he said, he looked at the war mainly from the perspective of an American on the front lines. But he soon realized that the war was more about America in the Middle East and the people who lived there. Those people, he said, were the ones affected by it, the ones “who we generally refuse to see as three-dimensional human beings.”

As the wars continued, he said, he grew more interested in knowing what it was about America that made it “keep on fighting these reckless wars in reckless ways.”

In truth, he knew little about his own country.

“I started discovering America while on embeds in Iraq and Afghanistan because I was suddenly seeing a cross culture of race and class in American society that I hadn’t been exposed to growing up,” he said.

5 Lawsuits That Could Reshape the Art World in 2018 - Artsy
Even after the 2013 case, the judge in Graham v. Prince found Prince’s total and full use of Graham’s image—without any alteration beyond adding some Instagram comments—does not lend itself to a clear-cut fair use argument. The case will now proceed to trial. If Prince loses (a big if) and the ruling is upheld on appeal (an even bigger if) the resulting precedent could reign in the broader fair use interpretation afforded to artists by the earlier ruling.

Wilmette approves 16-unit affordable housing plan for old American Legion site - Wilmette Life
Village President Bob Bielinski told the audience that the benefits of having affordable housing in town outweighed any plan shortcomings.

“This is workforce housing,” he said. “Frankly I think this is a truly unique opportunity, and I will support it.”

Cleland Place supporters, many of whom wore stickers prominently displaying “YIMBY” for “yes in my back yard,” said the project would bring needed diversity to Wilmette housing stock, and would allow people such as preschool teachers, pharmacy technicians, waiters, retail salespeople and childcare workers to live in the town in which they worked.

“Over the years, I’ve heard the same arguments each time some type of affordable housing was proposed,” said Prairie Avenue resident Judy Goode, a former village Plan Commission member. “I think it’s time for us to mature as a village. We’re ready for this.”

Opponents repeated concerns that the project was too dense for the lot it will rise on, would add to traffic congestion at the nearby Wilmette Avenue-Ridge Road intersection and would lower nearby property values.

L.A. Photo Curator: International Photography Awards - 'Where Photography & Philanthropy Meet' : CURRENT CALL FOR ENTRY: 'Street Shooting' - Curator Julia Dean - Deadline December 13, 2017
Dean says, "This call is looking for photographs taken on the street, in Los Angeles or around the world. What is street photography? It is candid moments on the street or in any other public place such a grocery store, a mall, or a park. It is chance encounters and random incidents in public places. Street photography generally focuses on people and everyday life and shares the same ethics as photojournalism and documentary photography, meaning nothing is set up or changed in the digital darkroom. Street portraits are also considered to be street photography and like photojournalism, portraits are the only type of photograph that can be set up.

Some street photographers shoot in an artful way, with shadows and light. Others shoot like a newspaper photographer, concentrating on moments among people on the street. Don’t just photograph someone walking down the sidewalk. The genre is saturated with these images. Look for unusual locations and aesthetically pleasing backgrounds. The background content is as important as the subject. The combination of the two makes the picture. Do not photograph anyone less fortunate than yourself, meaning no photos of homeless people unless you can make a strong social statement."
