Revealed: the areas in the UK with one Airbnb for every four homes | Airbnb | The Guardian
The Guardian cross-referenced a database of more than 250,000 Airbnb listings with government housing stock figures to calculate the “penetration rate” of Airbnbs in 8,000 areas across England, Wales and Scotland. Across the whole of Great Britain, there were 0.8 Airbnb listings for every 100 homes.
Listings data – covering the six months to January – was provided by Inside Airbnb, a non-commercial project that aims to highlight the impact of the service on residential housing markets.

Scottish taxpayers footing £2.6m Airbnb tax bill in Edinburgh - Edinburgh Evening News
Sure! The tax headline was the simplest of the three - used publicly available lists of business rate payers in Edinburgh who operate 'self-catered units' which is gov speak for short-term lets. Then, for each, worked out their rates payable and the non-domestic rates relief they got, and added it all together for the final figure. The unlawful properties is based off Inside.Airbnb data for Edinburgh of the number of full-property listings, and as described in the story, the fact the council are winning change-of-use planning appeals, just at a very very slow rate.
The last one was tougher, but using the same list as the first story, was all about linking the companies running large numbers of STLs with individuals and title deeds of the properties they're running as STLs.
Main thing to say with this is that the data on Airbnb is incredibly patchy. It's virtually impossible to match Airbnb listings with individual properties and therefore title deeds, but you can match Booking.com listings with Airbnb listings using photos, and Booking.com uses more detailed addresses than Airbnb's anonymised location data does. It's not 100% accurate, so I stuck to those publicly listed as STL business rate payers (edited)

In all their marketing material they are obliged to display clearly their registration number: "HG-0000xxxx". If you don't see a registration number they are illegal and will one day be shut down. Just so you all know. It is estimated that about 6000 places are on offer at any given time on Airbnb and similar websites. The list of registered homestays is now about 840 and declining from 1100+.

Airbnb Teams With Hearst on Magazine Guided by Travel Site’s Data - WSJ
Those data are expected to enable editors to assign stories for an audience eager to learn about local hot spots. Since Savannah, Ga., is one of Airbnb’s top search destinations, one piece in the first issue includes barbecue recommendations from a Savannah barbecue pit master.

There is also a piece about Porvoo, a city on the southern coast of Finland, because Airbnb data show an increasing number of people are interested in that destination.

London’s Luxury Homes Won’t Sell, So Now They’re on Airbnb - Bloomberg
The number of London properties listed on Airbnb almost doubled in a year to 50,000 at the end of 2016, according to data compiled by broker Jones Lang LaSalle Inc. London Mayor Sadiq Khan warned the city’s lawmakers this month that the rise of short-term rentals risks making fewer homes available for permanent residents.

Airbnb is driving up the rent in your urban neighborhood | Alexander Zaitchik | Opinion | The Guardian
But it’s not just activists who are worried – public officials across the country have been slowly collecting binders of data on Airbnb’s impact on cities. Two years ago, New York’s attorney general office released a study showing that commercial lessors operate a third of Airbnb rentals in the city, most in violation of zoning and tax law.

And last year, the Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy published a report estimating that close to 90% of Airbnb’s LA revenue was derived from absentee landlords and leasing companies. They estimate Airbnb keeps more than 7,000 units off the rental market – equal to seven years of affordable housing construction.

However, Airbnb disputes the findings and denies that a growing number of its clients are landlords.

Beware of Airbnb entering the hyperlocal travel guide business | Monday Note
Last November, Airbnb fired the first shot: Pineapple, a 128 page, ad-free, glossy quarterly magazine, mostly written by hosts and guests gently discussing their experiences. With a tiny print run of 20,000 copies, it was distributed for free in some Airbnb hotspots and sold at selected bookstores such as WH Smith in Paris, where I got my copy for €12. According to Pineapple publisher Christopher Lunekzic (interview on the FIPP site), “The idea came from a desire to capture the unique nature of traveling through Airbnb. We wanted to bring that sense of creativity, culture and connection to life”. All the talking points of an elegant PR campaign are checked, part of Airbnb recent rebranding. Nothing to freak out travel press behemoths.
