Implicit in the drug-approval process is a trade-off between Type I and Type II error. We explore the application of Bayesian decision analysis (BDA) to minimize the expected cost of drug approval, where relative costs are calibrated using U.S. Burden of Disease Study 2010 data. The results for conventional fixed-sample randomized clinical-trial designs suggest that for terminal illnesses with no existing therapies such as pancreatic cancer, the standard threshold of 2.5% is substantially more conservative than the BDA-optimal threshold of 27.9%. However, for relatively less deadly conditions such as prostate cancer, 2.5% is more risk-tolerant or aggressive than the BDA-optimal threshold of 1.2%. We compute BDA-optimal sizes for 25 of the most lethal diseases and show how a BDA-informed approval process can incorporate all stakeholders’ views in a systematic, transparent, internally consistent, and repeatable manner.

"Google operates a little-known program to harness the brain power of university researchers to help sway opinion and public policy, cultivating financial relationships with professors at campuses from Harvard University to the University of California, Berkeley.

Over the past decade, Google has helped finance hundreds of research papers to defend against regulatory challenges of its market dominance, paying $5,000 to $400,000 for the work, The Wall Street Journal found.

Some researchers share their papers before publication and let Google give suggestions, according to thousands of pages of emails obtained by the Journal in public-records requests of more than a dozen university professors. The professors don't always reveal Google's backing in their papers, and few disclosed the financial ties in later articles on the same or similar topics, the Journal found."

He then suggests three “tracks that have the potential to drive a new and exciting research in communication theory over a longer period”

1. Communication under adversarial impact: “when dealing with adversarial impact instead of dealing only with physical limits, it is much more difficult, if at all possible, to reach a saturation point for research, since the adversary is doing his/her research as well”

2. Interaction among vertical services: “What are the fundamental communication-theoretic problems that arise from interaction among multiple vertical connections, each with different requirements? … In spectrum regulation, and especially for unlicensed spectrum, there is the tendency to make spectrum usage rules generic, as much as possible independent of the requirements of the vertical service. Net neutrality also ... Building a communication theory that addresses the fundamentals of interaction among multiple vertical services, has the potential to change the way we configure communication systems, as well as utilize and regulate the spectrum and communication services.”

3. Communication beyond dedicated electronic circuits: “communication theory leans towards a mathematical sub-discipline. The latter means that communication theory is not necessarily applied only to electronic circuits that are built for communication and has wider implications.”

So for the finding that smoking causes lung cancer, the credibility estimate would be 99.99999 per cent. Conversely, for findings where we have only seen a few cases that drug X may cause severe bleeding, for instance, the credibility estimate might be 1 per cent. It may still be worth publishing because it is important to make sure the drug doesn't cause severe bleeding."

"The journal Science is adding an extra round of statistical checks to its peer-review process, editor-in-chief Marcia McNutt announced today. The policy follows similar efforts from other journals, after widespread concern that basic mistakes in data analysis are contributing to the irreproducibility of many published research findings.. . . Working with the American Statistical Association, the journal has appointed seven experts to a statistics board of reviewing editors (SBoRE). Manuscript will be flagged up for additional scrutiny by the journal’s internal editors, or by its existing Board of Reviewing Editors (more than 100 scientists whom the journal regularly consults on papers) or by outside peer reviewers. The SBoRE panel will then find external statisticians to review these manuscripts."

Better spectrum management leads to more efficient utilisation and an increase in value for all stakeholders.This study involved deploying measurement equipment on the roofs of the vehicles used by a UK-wide sales force to capture information on frequency bands from 10MHz to 6GHz. "Diederik Stapel, a Dutch social psychologist, perpetrated an audacious academic fraud by making up studies that told the world what it wanted to hear about human nature." "But the scientific misconduct that has come to light in recent years suggests at the very least that the number of bad actors in science isn’t as insignificant as many would like to believe. In his early years of research — when he supposedly collected real experimental data — Stapel wrote papers laying out complicated and messy relationships between multiple variables. He soon realized that journal editors preferred simplicity. “They are actually telling you: ‘Leave out this stuff. Make it simpler,’ ” Stapel told me. Before long, he was striving to write elegant articles."

"Writing in the Wall Street Journal, biologist E. O. Wilson asks if math is necessary for doing great science. At first glance the question seems rather pointless and the answer trivial; we can easily name dozens of Nobel Prize winners whose work was not mathematical at all. Most top chemists and biomedical researchers have little use for mathematics per se, except in terms of using statistical software or basic calculus. The history of science is filled with scientists like Darwin, Lavoisier and Linnaeus who were poor mathematicians but who revolutionized their fields. But Wilson seems to be approaching this question from two different perspectives and by and large I agree with both of them. The first perspective is from the point of view of students and the second is from the point of view of research scientists. Wilson contends that many students who want to become scientists are put off when they are told that they need to know mathematics well to become great scientists."

"By reviewing the acknowledgements in immunology papers since 1950, I have found that when principal investigators (PIs) who were frequently thanked by others died unexpectedly, the quality of the papers of their collaborators dropped. In contrast, the quality of co-authors' work changed little after the passing away of PIs who were not particularly helpful to others"
