Swarm Technologies will pay $900,000 to settle an investigation by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission into the startup’s launch of four picosatellites on an Indian rocket this January without regulatory approval, the FCC announced Dec. 20.

The Afternoon Constellation - A-Train
NASA and its international partners operate several Earth-observing satellites that closely follow one after another along the same orbital “track.” This coordinated group of satellites, constituting a significant subset of NASA’s current operating major satellite missions, is called the Afternoon Constellation, or the A-Train, for short. The satellites are in a polar orbit, crossing the equator northbound at about 1:30 p.m. local time, within seconds to minutes of each other. This allows near-simultaneous observations of a wide variety of parameters to aid the scientific community in advancing our knowledge of Earth-system science and applying this knowledge for the benefit of society. Six satellites currently fly in the A-Train: OCO-2, GCOM-W1, Aqua, CALIPSO, CloudSat, and Aura.

"ViaSat-1 was a technical marvel when it entered service over North America five years ago, with 10 times the capacity of any Ka-band satellite previously launched. But its beams filled up quickly. Boeing-built ViaSat-2, which was supposed to launch from Kourou on April 25, will have a throughput of 300 Gbps, offering more than double the capacity and seven times the coverage area of ViaSat-1."

"And as it prepares for the $600 million ViaSat-2 to come online later this year, the company already has embarked on an ambitious development of ViaSat-3, a family of three 1,000-Gbps satellites aimed at taking its network global by the early 2020s."

"In April, it was widely reported that Google was eyeing Skybox Imaging, a California-based startup that builds imaging microsatellites. Nothing appears to have transpired on that front, but WorldVu Satellites--a new company Google is reportedly backing--has secured spectrum rights for a low-earth-orbit satellite constellation."

"A recent Morgan Stanley research report suggest they are cooling on their view of SES, in part, due to the expanded capacity upcoming High Throughput Satellites (HTS) may bring the industry. Each of these satellites has 40x to 100x the capacity of a traditional single-beam satellite. The Morgan Stanley report estimates that industry capacity may increase by 75% by 2016. We suspect the actual capacity increase may much higher by 2017-2018."
