Coronavirus - Page 19 - Royal Orleans
I think the Diamond Princess is so far the best "coronavirus population data" we have so far to determine the potential danger of this pandemic. It's the only one that mostly a full data set. It was contained to those on a ship, it had enough time to spread/infect/resolve, the same types of lockdowns as we see today were implemented eventually (stay in room, wear a mask, hygiene practices, etc.), and the ultimate data tends to line up with what you’re hearing.
Recap: (I’m data driven, so here’s what I see. It's based on data found here:
3,711 passengers and crew ( ... oDbaYhKiUl) on board. 712 infected so approximately 20% - or 1 in 5 got it. Population was 100% tested and ~50% were asymptomatic ( ... lhulMPpTZ4). This explains how contagious this virus is. 10 have since died, so there’s a fatality rate of 1.6% but there are STILL 15 in critical care as of today. If all 15 end up dying, the fatality rate could be as high as 3.6%. Hopefully not. There’re also still 105 active cases since Feb 4 – almost 2 months from 1st infection! Anyone of those could potentially go to serious or even worse. One variable to consider is most cruises typically have an older population so this number “may” be skewed – we don’t really know. Clearly, on the low end the fatality rate is at least 10x more than the typical flu and as high as 20-30x more, based on this data alone. The recovery rate is ~85% of those infected, however we don’t really know the definition of “recovered” (i.e. recovered with major damage to lungs? Recovered fully? Recovered with ongoing complications that will resolve with more time?).

HTEWW Compilation v1.0 - Royal Orleans
Nearly five years in the making...
How The East Was Won, my compilation of the legendary Osaka shows!
Way back in 2015, when I first became a hardcore Zep fan, I heard the Osaka shows for the first time and have dreamed since then of having both shows combined into the greatest live album ever. The first night I started working on it, I became a bit emotional knowing that one of my dream projects was finally coming together.
And now I'm finally finished and proud to share it with all of you!
About 75% of the music comes from the soundboard sources, which was as much as I could possibly do. The rest of it comes from the best sounding versions of the stage source I could find. The versions used for the 29th are Ledsox, Winston, and Wendy; the 28th is the LZ Rarities remaster, and I thank them all for their hard work!
As the soundboards sound a bit different from each other, all songs are the full version from the respective night I chose with the exception of Dazed and Confused. Most of the song is from the 29th, except the last 4 minutes which are from the 28th. I decided not to fill in the gap in the soundboard with the stage source since this section of the song was performed better on the 28th anyway.
There are more songs I'd like to try and splice from both nights if the boards are ever remastered to sound as similar to each other as possible, namely Stairway and SIBLY, but overall, this is at least 90% what I wanted the album to sound like almost from the very beginning.
Hopefully v1.0 won't be the last (surely the rest of the WLL soundboard will show up sooner or later), but even if it is, I am very happy with it and I hope you enjoy it!

Rt 96 — Nextdoor
Debra Hogan, Fishers New
I get completely frustrated with people who speak without educating themselves. I regularly attend the meetings where topics like the above are discussed in full and usually there are only 5 or 6 people there. In fact, they held SEVERAL public meetings about the traffic problem in Victor. I live near the other side of the problem (Route 96 and Main Street Fishers). Each and every day people are endangering their lives and others as their "impatience" gives way to getting on the road. I've seen the same thing at Lynaugh.
So what needs to be done? A master plan referenced above ( was put together. Traffic engineers presented DATA about the impact of the overall proposal. This included data about lights vs roundabouts, widening roads, etc. If you are so inclined, get a copy of the study and READ it. The debate about a light vs a roundabout isn't one!
Life will be so much better when the entire plan is completed. But of course it will cost money and therefore a lot of time. The Town is looking to get help from the County, State and Feds to minimize our tax increases.
But when completed, I hope you will agree that life is better in Victor!

Q Magazine March 2020. 10 COMMANDMENTS by Mark Lanegan | the forum
The self-confessed "curmudgeonly old vampire" shares his golden rules for living.
Don't ever let anyone give you shit because you don't fit society's idea of" normal". The false sense of security some get by joining the pack of lemmings, who would all don ridiculous red baseball hats originally designed to keep a criminal politician's terrible comb-over in place while he struts around in public, are somehow oblivious of the fact that they will be the first to get fucked over by these shitheads they support. Ignorance is at a place where next week a trip to the doctor's office will get you a chest covered with leeches to fix what ails you. Kids, be brave, be smart and don't buy into the shit you're being shovelled. Know who you are and fearlessly follow your heart. If you are out of step with those around you, embrace it. Look how you want to look, love how and who you want to love, don't take any shit.
If you can help one person not feel so alone, you've done a great thing. Music did that for me as a lonely kid.
There is nothing like the relationship between an animal and a human. The unconditional love received from a dog or cat, horse or more exotic animal, is like no other. The joy of a puppy tearing circles around the yard, so full of life and fire and the heartache as he grows into an old man and comes to the end of the line. The pain of saying goodbye, the gift of the time you had together and the infinite ways your life is enriched by these experiences.
I grew up in a small farming/cattle ranching community and, from my earliest memories, I wanted to leave. Through circumstance, drive, and a shit-ton of luck, I have been able to spend the last 35 years travelling for a living. I rarely return to my hometown and when I do, it is to see my sister and my youngest nephew, who still live there. My mother and her husband live there also, and they are your typical old, white, xenophobic/racist people who met while working at the Hanford Nuclear plant. I'm of the opinion that when people spend their life in a bubble it breeds fear. Much like Trump's imaginary"crisis" on the Southern border of the United States, the worldwide hysteria over immigration is driven by fear. I loved Anthony Bourdain. He was an enthusiastic and loyal friend but was so important because he spent a huge part of his life casually travelling to many places the US government and others vilified, embraced local culture and put a human face on those who the fear-mongers would have us believe are evil. He was a prime example of what love, courage, empathy and compassion look like. Keep learning, keep loving.
Every day is an opportunity to create a new future. Don't forget to create your own reality. Know the difference between what you own and what someone else’s idea of you is. It's none of my business what anyone else thinks of me if I know who I am.
Or at least one you can find some satisfaction in. Too many people spend the majority of their lives working a job they hate just to pay the bills. I have been blessed to do something I love for a living but it gets harder by the year for musicians as the cultural shift in how people get their music has driven many out of the business.
Homelessness and poverty are at epic levels in the United States and elsewhere across the globe. Addiction, untreated mental illness, personal tragedy, downsizing businesses, estrangement from or loss of family and friends to turn to for help are some of the countless reasons why people can find themselves in this predicament. Whenever I see a homeless person, I remember how close I am to such a situation and how my own experience with homelessness and addiction felt like endlessly climbing Everest - starting over every day, and never reaching the summit. The brutality of living out of doors takes an unbelievable strength of physical and psychic willpower, God forbid by circumstance you ever find yourself there.
I will never forget the music that changed my life. Where I grew up most people had no awareness of who Jimi Hendrix was, born just 100 miles away. My saving grace was a small record store run by a hippy who was curious for the new and weird. When he put on the 12-inch single of the Sex Pistols' Anarchy In The UK, it changed my life for ever. Later, The Gun Club, Joy Division, The Velvet Underground, Stooges, David Bowie and a hundred other artists continued my quest of discovery for the new, exotic and interesting.
The Earth is being pillaged and raped to the point where 18.7 million acres a year are being destroyed by deforestation - that breaks down to 27 football fields a minute, an area the size of Switzerland yearly. It is likely too late to turn back the clock on this planet's destruction bythe greed of men, but as an individual I tryto plant as many trees, flowers and shrubs on my property as possible. There is something meditative about doing some small gesture that gives to the Earth and takes my mind off the futility of my actions.
In this age of technology and social media, people like me who make music are privyto immediate criticism or praise and are able to comment in return just as quickly. I admit to being guilty of spending too much of my rare down-time taking shots at the low-hanging fruit of the clichéd descriptors, less-than-informed reviewers and the speculators who seem to know the motivation and meaning behind every song lyric. I sometimes find it irresistible to play the curmudgeonly old vampire and show up with a surprise ball-buster at a super-fan's feed on occasion as well. I'm probably the only guy out there who will find faux-fault when someone writes, "It's his greatest record ever!" Usually the ensuing brief internet conversation ends with me laughing and hopefully my target doing the same.

FDNY Reviewed 4chan Post About Jeffrey Epstein’s Death
About 38 minutes before news outlets first reported Jeffrey Epstein's death in prison, a 4chan user published a detailed post about it.
The Manhattan Correctional Center where Jeffrey Epstein was found dead on Aug. 10.
The New York City Fire Department looked into whether an employee posted about Jeffrey Epstein’s death on a notorious internet message board prior to officials announcing it to the public, BuzzFeed News has learned.
After telling BuzzFeed News the post was "under review," an FDNY spokesperson said authorities "determined this alleged information did not come from the Fire Department."
"An investigation is a formal act which brings about a process which includes interviewing witnesses, serving notice, determining credibility of witness statements — and that was not warranted nor did it take place here. This determination was made after a review of the incident. We looked at the information provided by [a BuzzFeed News] reporter and we looked at our own records and there was no match," said FDNY spokesperson Frank Dwyer, who added that the FDNY's Office of Healthcare Compliance conducted the review. "It doesn't match our medical records."
Almost 40 minutes before ABC News first reported Epstein’s death on Twitter, someone posted still-unverified details on 4chan, the anonymous message board popular with far-right trolls and white nationalists.

Tuesday’s open thread - True Blue LA
It’s been one day since the Astros received penalties from the MLB after sign stealing in the 2017 postseason. Houston received multiple punishments, including loses of 1st and 2nd round draft picks for the next two drafts and a $5 million fine. During the press conference, the Astros owner, Jim Crane, announced the firing of manager AJ Hinch and general manager Jeff Luhnow.
What a Monday morning.

Guys, could use some help please. This seems to be discussed in several places in this forum, but I was hoping for a discussion devoted to this and this alone.
From what I've read, there are many different audience sources of this gig. Also, many different labels have put this out.
My question is, what is the definitive version?

Not really a definitive version, because of all the source combos but the Winston Remaster is pretty damn good. A new label called Moonchild has been pressing Winston's freely shared work onto silver discs and selling them for $10 to $40 a title depending on the source. ( I don't like the fact that "Moon Child" is taking a freely shared version and pressing them onto silvers with some artwork and selling them but hey, that's the boot business).  I worked on a fan based version called Heavy Vibraphones which I think stands up to the best of them. The latest offering from Eat A Peach was quite good. The key with that show is to enjoy the different sources because they have different sonic qualities to enjoy. Mono, stereo, more ambient , more dry and focused. I still like the old Cobra boot!  But if you want the best source blend with smooth editing and correct pitch, then you can't go wrong with the Eat A Peach version.   Heavy Vibraphones is quite good IMHO and should be around the trading sites still. If you want silver pressed discs and artwork though you'll have to pay $ and take your chance. I would go for the Winston ( Moon Child) or Eat A Peach versions.

How to "repair" a PDF that opens in Acrobat Reader but not Preview - Ask Different
I have a PDF that won't open in Preview; it gives this error message...
However, it will open in Acrobat Reader, but cannot be resaved, or saved with a new file name from Reader...
As I can see all the pages (or most of them at least!) from this PDF, there must be some way to get them into a file that Preview can open. I can do this by copying pages from Reader one-at-a-time, but the PDF has 500 pages.
What is the easiest and cheapest way to export all these pages, and create a new PDF, from Acrobat Reader?
EDIT: I'd rather not have to sign up for online Adobe services...

A Year Later, Cybercrime Groups Still Rampant on Facebook — Krebs on Security
Almost exactly one year ago, KrebsOnSecurity reported that a mere two hours of searching revealed more than 100 Facebook groups with some 300,000 members openly advertising services to support all types of cybercrime, including spam, credit card fraud and identity theft. Facebook responded by deleting those groups. Last week, a similar analysis led to the takedown of 74 cybercrime groups operating openly on Facebook with more than 385,000 members.
Researchers at Cisco Talos discovered the groups using the same sophisticated methods I employed last year — running a search on for terms unambiguously tied to fraud, such as “spam” and “phishing.” Talos said most of the groups were less than a year old, and that Facebook deleted the groups after being notified by Cisco.
Talos also re-confirmed my findings that Facebook still generally ignores individual abuse reports about groups that supposedly violate its ‘community standards,’ which specifically forbid the types of activity espoused by the groups that Talos flagged.
“Talos initially attempted to take down these groups individually through Facebook’s abuse reporting functionality,” the researchers found. “While some groups were removed immediately, other groups only had specific posts removed.”
But Facebook deleted all offending groups after researchers told Facebook’s security team they were going to publish their findings.  This is precisely what I experienced a year ago.
Not long after Facebook deleted most of the 120 cybercrime groups I reported to it back in April 2018, many of the groups began reemerging elsewhere on the social network under similar names with the same members.

The Best of Liz Phair Compilation : What Would You Include? | Steve Hoffman Music Forums
I have all of Liz Phair's album releases along with a number of singles, compilation tracks, and all of the girlysound demos...but I haven't listened enough to know her stuff inside and out.
I'd like to put together a one disc "best of" disc and was hoping to find some help in deciding what should go on the disc. I'm looking at from a Marketers perspective by thinking up a collection that could be released to the public as a decent career overview...I don't want to load it up with a bunch of non LP tracks, but a few are okay.
Let's call it a LP/101 release.
Here we go:
Her charted singles in the US (one one chart or another) are:
Why Can't I
Everything To Me
So these belong on the CD.
She also released videos for the following:
Never Said
Rocket Boy
Polyester Bride
And He Slayed Her
So these tracks should likely be in the running as well since they made some sort of imprint on the public (whether that be small or big).
And then you have a 2003 promo CD release called Retrospective that was put together to promote her self-titled release. This nine track set included:
**** and Run
Polyester Bride
Love is Nothing
What Makes You Happy
Again -- in the running since Liz might have had some say in the tracks that went on this promo release.
"Flower" probably belongs on their somewhere...and I love "Little Digger" and "Love/Hate" from her S/T release. I'm not anti-Funstyle either - I like "Smoke" a lot and a few of the "normal" tracks are pretty good.
So there you have it -- what would you include on a "Best of Liz Phair" release?
PS: Let's try our best to not turn this thread into a "I don't know why, but I think she's hot" thread!

Analyzis of the Different Versions of THE CAGE - The Original Series - The Omega Sector BBS
Posted February 6, 2015
In the history of television, no television series has had the unique opportunity of seeing not one but two pilot episodes produced other than STAR TREK. Had it not been for "The Cage", shot at the end of 1964 and submitted in early 1965, we would have not had "Where No Man Has Gone Before" and everything that followed.
"The Cage" remains to this day unique in not just television history but STAR TREK history as well, in that the nucleus of what would be explored in the original series would be laid out for all 79 classic episodes as well as the myriad spinoffs over the next four decades. "The Cage" is also unique in that what was originally produced in 1964-65 would not survive intact at all, as it would be edited, reassembled, restored, and in some cases even lost forever.
Thanks to the advent of home video technology, we now have no less than four different versions of "The Cage" that have been commercially released to the public since 1986, due to the many VHS, laserdisc, and DVD releases, as well as two versions that have never appeared on video in any form. But along with those releases, there are some people who remain confused as to which version of "The Cage" is which. In this exclusive report, I will attempt to lay bare once and for all the facts behind the many variations of the original "Star Trek" pilot episode.
Where do we begin? Well, for starters, we must go back in time to 1966, when the series was in full production in its first season. Once STAR TREK was in full swing, Roddenberry wanted to present "The Cage" during the series' run but couldn't conceive of a convincing story in which to integrate the pilot. He soon came up with the idea of a framing story which saw Spock on trial for his life in abducting his former captain, Christopher Pike, and transporting him to Talos IV. For his evidence Spock presented a video testimony of the mission logs from thirteen years before - in reality, excerpts from "The Cage" were incorporated into the episodes which became the series' only two-part tale, "The Menagerie".
This is where the problem begins.

1Password Family user guide? — 1Password Forum
I have been using 1Password (single account) for a number of years, so am fairly familiar with its features. I am considering moving to a 1Password Families account. I know there is a free trial period, but I am looking for a user guide that explains how it works. Does such a guide exist? If no, let me ask three questions here.
Let's say there are 4 family members. I would want 5 vaults: one for each family member that can be accessed only by the specific family member, plus a 5th vault that can be shared by all family members. Is this how 1P Families works?
In the 5th, shared vault, can I limit updates to a single family member? In other words, only one family member can add / update items in the 5th vault, but all family members have "read access" to the vault?
I use Wifi Sync and do not store my 1P data in the cloud. Does 1P Families force me to move to the cloud? Or can I still keep my "master" 1P data on my iMac, and have each family member Wifi sync their own iOS device (and relevant vaults) to the iMac?
Thank you!

The James Bond 007 Dossier | Dr. No Rare Uncut Version 1st Beta/VHS release 1982
Back in 2013 I read a post on the MI6 Community Forums about the existence of an uncensored version of Dr. No that had been briefly released on video tape in 1982. I doubt this is where the legend began, but it's as good a starting point as any. I have read through the entire twelve page thread a few times now. Most of it is about the Goldeneye and Living Daylights workprints, so I have edited it down to just the highlights pertinent to our discussion...
...That last, rather skeptical sounding, post appears to be from Gavin Salkeld, who has his own page detailing all the cuts to the James Bond films over the years. According to the information on Salkeld's page, the BBFC required the following cuts for an 'A' rated cinema release in 1962.
- Bond's fight with the chauffeur has been trimmed, including the removals of blows to the chauffeur when he is unable to defend himself. A knee kick in this fight was also removed.
- The killing of Dent has been trimmed to so Bond only fires one fatal shot. Footage was removed of Bond shooting extra shots into Dent's back as he lies on the floor dying.
- Dr. NoDr. No's line "I'm sure she will amuse the guards" was considered too sexually suggestive, and has been redubbed instead to "I'm sure the guards will amuse her".
- Shortly after that, the scene where Dr. NoDr. No's henchmen are beating up Bond as he is sat at the table has been trimmed, introducing a dissolve to the next scene much earlier to cover the removal of violent footage.
"The cuts were presumably to the negative as was often the norm in the 60s, so cuts now persist to all prints worldwide".
The implication is therefore that these cuts have also persisted to all worldwide releases - including all home video formats - ever since.

Time Machine - Making it Work - Learn from My Suffering - Synology Forum
Hi all,
I got my Diskstation a couple of days ago and one of my primary purposes for its existence is to backup my Macbook Pro.
Unfortunately it didn't want to do that.
Being a Mac user, I feel that it should be as simple as clicking a button that says "turn on Time Machine backups" but oh no, it couldn't be that simple.
Here are the steps I had to go through.
Part 1 - Create a share
1. FIrst open Control Panel
2. Go to File Share
3. Click the [ Create ] button
4. Name the share something like Time Machine Backup (spaces are okay)
5. Uncheck "Enable Recycle Bin" (you're never going to need to fish your backups out of the trash, since you'll not be accessing the files directly yourself, so this feature would waste space)
6. Check "Encrypt this shared folder" (this makes the Diskstation do the encryption which will save resources on your Mac)
7. Input an encryption key
8. Click the [ OK ] button
Now one would think "great, I have a file share, I can just tell my Mac to use it as my Time Machine disk."
Nope. This is BSD. You can put a pretty UI on it, but it's still BSD. You have to tell it to open the peanut butter before taking the peanut butter out of the jar.
Next you need to create a user to access the share...

Led Zeppelin: Live in New York
A ledzepfilm Production
In Concert, Not Beyond
After nearly three months of work, I am proud to finally unveil Live in New York, my re-imagined version of a 1973 Led Zeppelin concert at Madison Square Garden. I don't want to flat out spoil anything, so just download, watch, and enjoy it! If you have any questions about the edit, feel free to ask!
I understand that these sources are in varying degrees of quality. Hopefully the concert experience makes up for it! I know .m2t is an unconventional file type, but you will be able to watch it using VLC.

iPhone Back Up to External Hard Drive OSX… - Apple Community
iPhone Back Up to External Hard Drive OSX 10.14 Mojave
Help Please.... Im backing my iPhone X up to my Mac Book Pro using iTunes 12.9. Also Im running Mojave. I watched all the videos on how to get to the "Library" then "Application Support" and then to "Mobile Sync." I then copied the "Backup" folder to my External Hard Drive. I then Erased the "Backup" folder from the Mobile Sync folder. After that I was told to paste something like this:
ln -s /Volumes/mac1tb\ 1/Backup /Users/djtee1tb/Library/Application\ Support/MobileSync/Backup
It was created with my external direction as well as my internal HD name. after 100 different variations and toys pasting it into TERMINAL I get this:
"Operation Not Permitted"
I see older posts where this worked. Is it not working for me because I updated to Mojave? Am I doing something wrong? Im confused. Anyone have any idea how to accomplish this task using Mojave? Thanks in advance.

Starman - loud and quiet keyboard versions - David Bowie Wonderworld
I've just read on Wiki that the single version of Starman had the loud morse code keyboard bit, whereas the album version had the quieter version.
I thought it wasn't as simple as that, and that different album versions (depending on the country?) had the loud keyboard bit, and others the quiet bit?
Also, this has been raised before, but didn't the first US pressing have a slightly different intro?

Starman - David Bowie. Original UK LP and 45 mix is AWOL!! | Steve Hoffman Music Forums
OK, I've brought this up a couple of times in the past - see here for the most recent post with sound clips:
Every re-issue of "The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars" on CD (RCA, Ryko, EMI, Virgin) and SACD (EMI) has used a mix of "Starman" that features a subdued "morse code" section between the verse and the chorus. These staccato notes on the piano and guitar are much louder on the 1980 RCA International re-issue LP I grew up with and ever since noticing the alternate "quiet mix" on the CDs and SACD I've always wondered what the source of that "loud mix" was. I've always much preferred the "loud mix" as it has much more impact - those staccato notes are one of the defining moments on the LP for me so I have always found the "quiet mix" to be a real anti climax.
Out of curiosity I tracked down an original UK "Starman" 45 and to my delight it was the "loud mix". Since then I have tracked down what I believe is an original 1st pressing UK "Ziggy Stardust" LP and it turns out it also has the "loud mix".
I have had reports that this was the case from fellow forum members in the past but wanted to make sure with a 1st pressing before posting about it again.
The UK LP pressing I have is on RCA Victor:
Cat no: SF8287 (LSP 4702)
Side A: BGBS 0864-1E
Side B: BGBS 0865-1E
Forum member Chaz has the UK LP with these stampers which also features the "loud mix":
Side A: BGBS 0864-7E
Side B: BGBS 0865-4E
In the thread linked to above Ken Scott (the original producer on the "Ziggy Stardust" LP) agreed that the sample I posted of the "loud mix" was indeed a different mix to that which is on all digital re-issues of the song but was in the dark as to the origins of this "loud mix".
Now it is clear that the original UK LP and 45 had this "loud mix" it seems to me it needs to be found and re-instated in future release of the album.
Not only that but every compilation I've ever heard in the digital age that includes "Starman" uses the "quiet mix". Surely the "loud mix" needs to be re-instated on future compilations too.
I still don't have a definitve answer as to where the "quiet mix" originated. I'd be grateful if those of you with original US "Ziggy Stardust" LPs and "Starman" 45s could check which mix is used and let me know

How a Norwegian comment section turned chaos into order—with a simple quiz | Ars Technica
SXSW: NRK’s dedicated tech team employs “open source” tactics to fight trolling.
AUSTIN, Texas—The five-person team behind a simple WordPress plugin, which took three hours to code, never expected to receive worldwide attention as a result. But NRKbeta, the tech-testing group at Norway's largest national media organization, tapped into a meaty vein with the unveiling of last February's Know2Comment, an open source plugin that can attach to any WordPress site's comment section.
"It was a basic idea," NRKbeta developer Ståle Grut told a South By Southwest crowd on Tuesday. "Readers had to prove they read a story before they were able to comment on it."
The story has since been told a few times, but Grut's recent refresh on the topic is just as compelling for its comment-section impact as it is for NRK's thought process on how to make Internet media a better place: invite readers to have an active stake in improving it.

Led Zeppelin II - 1988 Technidisc CD with Different Mastering | Steve Hoffman Music Forums
Ok here's the whole story
From a FLAC dump of the original 1" Scully multitrack. And this is not a rap or dance remix - I tried to stay true to the intent Page and Kramer had back then.
My remix has no fade at the end. Interesting how they ended it, with a spoken farewell from Plant at the very end.
First a comparison:
And one with VU meters driven by my remix:
Listen to these on some good speakers.
This took well over 100 hours to do. I do a lot of mixing; this was tough to get to match the original; especially the middle fluff part.
I just wanted it cleaner and a bit more modern sounding.
I initially sent it to the webmaster at the official site - he said he couldn't here the difference. Cool... what I wanted. But to anyone that ever played WLL back on decent system might appreciate what I labored over. Not fun. And my poor wife - she hates Led Zep.

macOS Sierra Mail 10.3
When I define a mail account in Mail that account is automatically created as an IMAP account, no option to change the type to POP.
Does anyone know how to set-up a POP account in Mail ?
There used to be a trick available (pressing the Option Key when clicking the Continue button) for Mail to ask for the type of the account (imap or pop). That seems not to work anymore.
Any help would be much appreciated.
P.S. : btw, couldn't find a Mail Community. What am I doing wrong ?

New York Dolls - possibly the only band ever whose live bootlegs beat the studio albums | Steve Hoffman Music Forums
As much as I love the New York Dolls, I find myself listening to the bootleg live CDs more than the studio albums. I'm talking about things like French Kiss '74 and Hard Night's Day, which you can buy on Amazon.
Maybe they just weren't meant to be a studio band, or maybe their producers couldn't catch the energy, humor, and downright tightness that made them such a hit with audiences. These guys knew how to work an audience, and they were one of the all-time fun bands to watch.
If the Dolls never really did it for you, or if you've only heard the two Mercury albums, you owe it to yourself to spend a couple of bucks checking these out.

The Many Hats Club: An InfoSec Group For All Skill Levels
When it comes to the field of information security, the main goal is to protect consumers, businesses, and government entities from online threats and malware. As it is such fast moving field, new information is being discovered daily and it is important for this information to be disseminated quickly. Due to this, there tends to be a high level of information sharing where members of the InfoSec community provide insight into their own experiences in order to help others in similar situations.
A lot of this information sharing occurs on Twitter and blogs, but unfortunately these methods are not always the most efficient way to disseminate information that may be to sensitive or that needs to be spread quickly. With this in mind, security researchers Stuart Peck and David decided to create a group called The Many Hats Club where like minded people can share InfoSec information, build connections, and get to know each other.

Apple ME186LL/A Dual Driver Improved Revision? |
First off, a MUST read.
While the ADDIEM fell under the radar for a while [being vastly underrated?], Apple discretely revised the build of the ADDIEMs , but may have also tuned the sound a bit differently. The ADDIEMs labeled MA850G/A are now ME186LL/A. Certainly the performance of the new ME186LL/A is outstanding rivaling stuff that is way above it's price range. This IEM doesn't lack the bass presence of the Etymotics while having an airy, extended, smooth treble, that lacks any big resonants unlike a GR07, EX1000 or R50. With better treble bandwidth, treble smoothness, bass depth and soundstage than RE400. This is the IEM to beat at this price range.
Of course, there are some things to note as no IEM is perfect
A 30ohm adapter is a must, it decreases it's main distortion flaw and makes the midrange more clear and transparent.
This Cowon cable is a 33ohm adapter.
Almost all aftermarket tips kill an aspect of it's sound. Sony Hybrids and Comply Whoomp tips are the only ones that provide the best performance, besides the brilliant stock tips.
Feel free to post any questions or concerns.

The Complete Million Dollar Quartet - 50th Anniversary Edition | Steve Hoffman Music Forums
This 2006 re-issue has been discussed before:
However, since that thread is no longer active I thought I'd start a new one for those who may not know about this release.
For years I have wondered how it was that the original 1990 CD from BMG sounded so poor (not much better than the grey market releases around at the time) while the previously unavailable snippet of "Reconsider Baby" that appeared on the 1992 The King Of Rock 'n' Roll - The Complete 50s Masters box set sounded like it was from a source very close to the 1st gen master.
I figured that if BMG had the great sounding tape for "Reconsider Baby" in 1992 they probably had the same quality for the rest of the session material. After years of waiting for a release of this historical session from this better source that I was sure they must have I eventually gave up and forgot about the whole business......
Until today
I searched the forum to see if anything had happened in recent years and, lo and behold, I discovered that in 2006 a 50th Anniversary Edition had been released purportedly from a better tape - and with another 12 minutes of previously unavailable material!
So, I popped into my local HMV after dropping the kids off at school in the unlikely event that they might have one in stock (these days you are lucky to find anything you are looking for in store ). To my delight they had one - and I am listening to it right now......
Finally being able to listen to the session without the horrible distortion on previous editions it is like being a fly on the wall at one of the most important impromptu jam sessions in history.
During my search of the forum this morning I read that Bear Family put out a 2-LP set some years ago that was also from a better source than was used for the other releases up until then. I'm not sure how good that sounds but I doubt it would be any better than this 2006 release.
Anyway, I just thought it would be worth bringing this up again in case anyone had totally missed this release like I had.
This is truly one of the best re-issues of recent years - there's still no sign of Johnny Cash though.......

If iCloud Photo Library cannot be turned on aga... | Communities
Turning on iCloud Photo Library again can be a problem after moving the library to a new drive or restoring it from a backup. Even if the library is still identical to the library in iCloud, iCloud will upload it again to iCloud.
Whenever there is the least doubt that the library you are trying to enable for iCloud may changed slightly, Photos will upload the complete library to compare it to iCloud, after restoring from a backup or moving the library to a different drive, or after repairing the library, even after turning iCloud Photo Library off and on again (Why is iCloud uploading my entire iCloud Photo library again after I moved its location?). The restored library from a backup may contain photos that already have been deleted from iCloud, or may have different edits and metadata applied. When Photos estimates the amount of iCloud storage needed for the additional upload, it will estimate the required storage using the worst case assumption that all photos are different. If there is not enough free iCloud storage to upload the complete library again in addition to the photos already in iCloud, Photos will not allow you to enable iCloud Photo Library.
You have now two options:
Sign up for more iCloud storage for a month, so you can start the upload, then cancel the additional storage again.
Or create a new, empty Photos Library and download the library from iCloud to your Mac. This will not require additional cloud storage, since the library is empty. This will work, if you did not import any new photos since the last sync with iCloud.

Why is iCloud uploading my entire iCloud Photo ... | Communities
That is unfortunately what will happen, when you move a Photos library to a different drive. You have to enable iCloud Photo Library again for the moved library, and iCloud will upload all photos again to merge them into the library in iCloud.  There are many reasons for iCloud to upload the library again and to merge it again with iCloud:
When you move the library to a different drive.
When you restore the library from a backup.
When you temporarily toggle iCloud Photo Library off and on again
When you switch the iCloud library temporarily to a different library and back to your original library.
When you enable My Photo Stream for a different library, for example an Aperture library and then switch back.
When you repair your current iCloud Library.
All these events will cause Photos to upload the library again to iCloud and to compare it to the current iCloud Photo Library in iCloud.
You may not be able to enable iCloud Photo Library again, if your library is very large and you do not have much free cloud storage. Then see this user tip:
If iCloud Photo Library cannot be turned on again because of lack of Cloud storage after moving or restoring the Photos …
If your Photos Library is large, be prepared for a long upload time if you repair your Photos Library, change its location, or disable iCloud Photo Library. Sometimes there is no help for it, but uploading the library again may take a week or longer, depending on the size of your library.
Apple is confirming that repairing the library will result in uploading it again in this document (Fix missing or incorrect thumbnails in Photos - Apple Support).

Rockasteria: The Yardbirds - Glimpses (1963-68 uk, classic influental blues garage 'n' roll, five disc box set, 2011 release)
Easy Action deserves an award for perseverance in the face of impossible odds, taking three years to realise the DVD of 2008’s historic MC5/Primal Scream Meltdown double-header, spending two years longer putting together this ultimate collection of aural Yardbirds documentation; they’ve used microsurgery where necessary to graft sections together and spice up ancient recordings.
This inestimably influential group was only active for five years, but gave the world three of its all-time stellar guitarists in Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page, while creating a unique mystique through their string of evocative, groundbreaking singles between 1965’s For Your Love and 1968’s Goodnight Sweet Josephine swansong.
First of all, the packaging is gorgeous: a 45-shaped box accommodating 32-page booklet (boasting remarkably candid photos), gig postcards, 7” single coupling 1963’s Baby, What’s Wrong with I Wish You Would, and five CDs. With the aid of numerous radio interviews conducted in the US or Europe at the time, these effectively tell the band’s story, from the previously-unheard alternate take of 1963’s Honey In Your Hips to March 1968’s landmark Peel session, on which Dazed And Confused pointed to where Page’s creative seeds were soon to blow and change the world.

CrashPlan is shutting down consumer side, going business only - Cloud Storage - RESET Forums (
That is not a link bait headline!
What about your data? If you are a home subscriber you will get 60 days on top of your normal expiration date.
You can migrate your data to their Small Business Plan for the remainder of your subscription and 75% off for the next 12 months.
Surprisingly enough, CrashPlan is pushing home subs to Carbonite!
How much does a Small Business Plans cost?
$10 a month
It's $10 a month per device though. If you are using multiple your price is going up. There are a lot of caveats however. You can move over 5TB and there is no computer to computer backup option. The 75% discount sounds like a decent deal but it makes me nervous with so much data moving about and changes happening. I would first and foremost, make sure you have your CP data backed up somewhere else. Then decide what your next move is.
If you are a CrashPlan subscriber you need to read up and read well. It's a sad day in my opinion. CrashPlan was held in very high regard throughout the years here in these forums. Stay tuned to this thread and the RESET podcast as we break this down and discuss options.

Rolling Stones Mickboy remasters. | Steve Hoffman Music Forums
I have recently traded for a copy of "Get what you need", Mickboy's version of the Rolling Stones "Le it bleed". I traded for it basically because I was interested in the bonus tracks, but the guy really got it. This cd sounds so much better than my vinyl version. I wonder how Mickboy does his remasters. To me it doesn't sound like a needle-drop... For example Dr. Ebbetts Beatles needle-drops don't compare to this cd. Does anybody know more about the Mickboy remasters and how they compare to the official remasters?
By the way I'm not a Stones afficcionado, but LIB (no, not Let it be...) is a great record and this version really rocks.

(Un)fortunately temptation, impatience and ebay finally got the better of me and I picked up the 30 track boot known as "Neue Revue Great Lost Kinks Album" (digipak version) which pops up quite often on ebay and sells for about $25. In a collection of 3,000 CDs it's my first boot.
Forget the first 15 tracks, but the next 15 are pretty great and include all of the yet to be officially released Great Lost tracks except Dave's Groovy Movies, plus lots more.
The sound quality on these tracks is about as good as any officially released 60s Kinks CD, so I'm absolutely (relatively) thrilled.
How wonderful it is to hear tracks like "Till Death Us Do Part "and "Where Did My Spring Go" etc again after all these years (having owned it on vinyl).

Hello Geniuses!in Mac mail, is there a way to KEEP the flagged emails IN the inbox, rather than have them go their own island? It is having the opposite effect of letting me know that this is an important email and I have to make an effort to go to find them. Suggestions?
Tim Stringer You can flag emails in the Inbox (or anywhere else). Though, I find it works best to just use the inbox as a collection point…and never keep anything in the inbox. For convenience, you could create a Smart Mailbox that shows all Flagged emails and add it to the Favorites Bar.

The first shots of Mavka. The Forest Song won the European professional audience over: at Cartoon Movie animation forum, the Ukrainian project stood out the most and spurred a lot of discussion.
On March 9, FILM.UA Group and Animagrad producers pitched Mavka. The Forest Song internationally for the first time, and did so with great success.  The pitching took place at the biggest European animation forum Cartoon Movie, with Ukraine participating in it for the first time. The main task producers put up before themselves – and fulfilled – was to attract the attention of potential European co-production partners, investors, distributors and broadcasters. This was facilitated by a comprehensive approach towards project presentation, which included much more than the pitch itself. In the end, Mavka. The Forest Song became the highlight of the forum and received a huge impetus for development. After the pitching, negotiations on film co-production already started; its release is planned for 2019.

This fix noted by lidorS post above also helped me but it resets iBooks to having nothing in it. You will need to download any purchases from iBooks and reload anything you have downloaded from other sources. The folder that you will move to the desktop contains all the books I had downloaded from other sources so in my case it was just a matter of moving them from the folder to iBooks. The Bourne Identity: Explosive Extended Edition (2002)
Matt Damon doesn’t come to mind as the actor I’d cast as an expert assassin. However, he indeed took on that kind of role in 2002’s The Bourne Identity, a film that proved just successful enough to spawn a sequel with 2004’s The Bourne Supremacy.
A ship in the Mediterranean finds Jason Bourne (Damon) floating in the sea, apparently near death with bullets in his back. When the boat’s doctor pulls out the slugs, he finds an odd one that displays text. Bourne wakes up and goes a little nutso, as he also reveals he can’t remember much.
Bourne remains on the ship and helps out, but he grows frustrated as his memory fails to return. When the boat docks, he heads off on his own and goes to Switzerland, the location mentioned in the capsule’s text. There he discovers he possesses some surprising abilities.

In the meantime, we see the goings on at the CIA’s headquarters. African businessman Wombosi (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) claims he survived a CIA assassination attempt and will write a book about the agency’s work in Africa. Director Abbott (Brian Cox) chats with chief Conklin (Chris Cooper) about a failed mission.

Ever heard the cliché “If it ain’t broke, why fix it”? Well, I think the makers of The Bourne Supremacy kept that question clearly in mind while filming the follow-up to the successful action-thriller The Bourne Identity. Really, not much has been tinkered with, and the entire principal cast not killed off in the previous film returns, including stars Matt Damon and Franka Potente. The screenplay also bears many similarities to the initial film, as Tony Gilroy authored it.

Based (loosely) on Robert Ludlum’s novel, The Bourne Identity doesn’t boast the most substantial storyline (it mostly facilitates the flow from action set piece to action set piece), but it sure is a fine throwback to espionage thrillers of the past! And although I would hesitate to call it a “great” movie, it is an enjoyable way to pass two hours, and a nice alternative to those who may be a little weary of the James Bond and Jack Ryan franchises.

He was the perfect weapon until he became the target
I'm a real sucker for a good spy thriller, but have
continuously grown tired of the James Bond franchise
which has become sillier with every new film. For
this reason, you'll find me more ready to cozy up
to such films as Spy Games, Mission Impossible
or Patriot Games. This year's most worthy entry
of this genre is The Bourne Identity, based
very loosely on the Cold War thriller by Robert Ludlum.

(2) How to buy: Bob Marley the early years | Steve Hoffman Music Forums
I'm talking Pre-Catch A Fire here. His Jamaican period up to 1972.
I think I have every track Marley recorded in this era, on my iTunes, culled from about 25 different CDs, and it comes to about 200 tracks. At its best, this material is a revelation: mystical, enigmatic, powerful and beautiful. In recording quality terms and feel they remind me of Dylan's Basement Tapes.
Now...what is the best route to collect this material on CD with the least amount of purchases? What are the best compilations? Which versions sound the best?

sierra - Disable Documents and Desktop iCloud sync but keep all files locally? - Ask Different
macOS Sierra

But is there a way of keeping the local content and deleting the iCloud content of the Documents and Desktop folder? Essentially, how can I revert my enabling and have everything local again?

Help Me Stop iCloud Sync in Mac OS Sierra! | Official Apple Support Communities
I upgraded to macOS Sierra 2 days ago. During the installation process, I selected "Use iCloud Drive" since i had been using it with El Capitan on my MacBook Pro. The installation completed, and I started opening my apps to see what had broken in the install process. I also decided that I did NOT want to use the new Sierra feature that synced documents to iCloud and removed older ones to save space. I opened System Preferences and deselected Optimize Mac Storage in the iCloud preferences, but I DID check the Documents and Desktop setting in the same pane. I closed the preferences and started working on something else, but when I returned to the desktop later, I discovered that EVERYTHING I had on the desktop had disappeared! I opened my iCloud Drive icon and, sure enough, the Desktop folder shows with a cloud next to it. I next received a warning from Box Sync that my Box folder had disappeared and needed to be relinked. I opened the folder and ALL the files inside of it were gone. I immediately went to System Preferences and de-selected the Documents and Desktop option, hoping things would return. They did not. Now, iCould Drive is trying to upload files to the cloud (which there is enough room to do in the cloud) but it won't stop the sync. It has moved 1 of 99 Gb of data at a very slow rate. Now, when I go to System Preferences to open iCloud and turn sync off, System Preferences hangs and I have to force-quit the program. I open the iCloud Drive folder and a spinning sync shows in the lower right corner but it apparently never connects.
What do I have to do to stop the iCloud sync, pull the files it has uploaded back to my Mac, and fix my System Preferences pane so I can open iCloud preferences again?

MX-03 Concept Car from 1985 - Mazda MX-6 Forum
Anyone have any information on it? I watched a whole video on it in my Auto Internship class that explained the rotary...but not much about the car. I just think it's interesting that the MX series was initially meant to be rotary powered and then they switched over to the KL series. Also find the ext/int body styling to be interesting. It's like an MX-6 in the front and NSX in the back.
Here is an interesting site I found when searching for some pictures. It looks like it's a bunch of Mazda concept cars including another one called the mx-04:
Any enthusiasts from way back when remember hearing anything about this? It's dated 1985 so I wasn't even a sperm yet when talk about this was going around.

Not Even IMDb Is Safe From Trolls
At a time when many websites are scrapping their comment sections, the movie database’s decision to shut down its popular, long-running message boards feels especially poignant
The message boards on IMDb long served as a home for film geeks. For popular movies — even ones that were decades old, like 1977’s Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope — it wasn’t uncommon for a half-dozen or more threads to be active at once, with users swapping theories and debating possible plot holes or filming errors. The boards, a de facto comment section for films, TV shows, actors, directors, producers, and Unnamed Man With Mole at the Bars, was where songs from trailers were tracked down in the pre-Shazam era, where a Q&A from a Teen Mom cameraman gone rogue was preserved and a Brittany Murphy conspiracy theory was invented. It was, enthused a New York Times commenter in 2008, a great place for “messing with Harry Potter fans … by purposely getting key facts wrong and then arguing as if they are right.”

One of the worst comments sections on the internet is shutting down | TechCrunch
Good riddance to one of the worst places to socialize on the internet. Amazon-owned IMDb announced today it will be closing down its discussion board later this month, and turning off the ability for users to private message each other. The company claimed the decision was made because the boards were “no longer providing a positive, useful experience for the vast majority of our more than 250 million monthly users worldwide.”
Anyone familiar with the boards would say that’s putting it mildly. Like many large, internet gathering places without strict moderation capabilities in place, IMDb’s boards didn’t serve the community as intended. That is, they failed to offer a place to have productive conversations about movies, shows, actors, and other members of the entertainment industry.

(2) ? and the Mysterians | Original Version of "96 Tears"? | Steve Hoffman Music Forums
The issue of Rolling Stone currently on newstands dealing with the 500 greatest songs of all time has an entry for "96 Tears" by ? and the Mysterians that I found interesting.
It states that the original version has never been released on CD and that all versions on CD are re-recordings. Can anyone confirm this?
Wikipedia states that it was first released on the small Pa-Go-Go label and then picked up by Cameo Records for national distribution.
Is the Cameo Records release the original version as released on the Pa-Go-Go label or was the song recorded new for Cameo and the Pa-Go-Go version is unique (and I assume rare).
I tried searching the archive, but couldn't find anything that ties in to my question.
Any one have insight?

All about Ray Gillen... -- Sleaze Roxx

Subject: All about Ray Gillen...
I seriously doubt Ray abused drugs; somehow that just doesn't fit--tho very little of the man's real and private life is known. I've tried to find info on him online, but even when people are asked about him in interviews, no one says much except "great guy," "phenomenal talent" or just "I knew him, RIP." I've never had so much difficulty finding information on someone before.
Ray commented in a late-80s interview that while he drinks his share, he's not excessive and doesn't party because "I want to stay healthy" (he was dead about 5 years later). Glenn Hughes has said that Ray was in serious denial about his disease and would always tell him he didn't have it, he said they both watched the tribute to Freddie Mercury together and Ray told him again he didn't have AIDS. Hughes said Ray once showed him bloodwork to prove it, only later Glenn found out it was actually Ray's brother's-in-law--not Ray's. Even Ray's mom denied it was AIDS.

Can Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior be used on an... | Communities
KJBNomad wrote:
...My question is, can either Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior be used in the same manner on this new SSD as it has been on a disc type hard drive?...
Haven't used Tech Tool in a long time, but with respect to DiskWarrior, yes. While hard disks and SSD's are very different animals, the directory used to find files on them isn't, and that's what both Apple's Disk Utility (First Aid: "Verify and/or Repair Disk") and DiskWarrior work on, with DiskWarrior generally doing better with really problematic directories.
Note that even if you had an optical drive, the CD that comes with DiskWarrior won't boot the rMBP and you need to boot from another drive to run DiskWarrior on the internal SSD. What I've done is get a USB flash drive (16GB+) and install Mountain Lion on it by booting from the Recovery Partition and choosing the flash drive as the destination for the fresh install. When that's done, you can install DiskWarrior on the flash drive and boot from that to run DW on the SSD.

What does Disk Warrior do? | Communities
...With all due respect to John Huber, who is a seasoned Forum contributor, I have a different opinion about this. I have no technical or progamming background but am an experienced longtime Mac user. DiskUtility (formerly Disk FirstAid) is an important tool for checking & repairs. It serves as a first line utility for dealing with disk or OS problems.
However, my experience has been that it detects only some types of problems . There are various third party products designed to address this area also: Norton System Utilities, TechTool Pro, Disk Warrior, and others. Each was designed to address specific types or ranges of problems. While there is a bit of overlap in types of tests they perform, each package has some unique features it addresses while not addressing others. Each product has its own strengths and weaknesses. There are some Mac users who will swear by one product and berate another...

cloudd and bird processes hogging the processor? | Communities
I have a fresh installation of Yosemite on a mid-2010 MBP. I'm seeing two processes, "cloudd" and "bird," consistently running the proc at about %60 and %40 consistently, along with the expected heat, fan and battery consumption. My first thought was that this was tied to iCloud Drive indexing, but we're deep into hour three at this point, which seems little excessive to index less than .5G in data.
Anyone else seeing this?

This happened to me also on 10.10.2 after a cleaning session with Onyx. It took a couple of restarts to fix it.
