"at 11, is considered…to be adult because he is alleged to have acted badly…how good must  [he] be to be considered an adult?…

…imagine now that you are btwn age 10 & 25. If you are you're in a bizarre never-never land where your age will always be used against you, but rarely get you anything…

Let's start by correcting juvenile justice laws…while we're doing that, let's make sure that we are moving kids toward freedom, that Middle School looks more open, more chaotic, than elementary school. That High School looks, & is, more open still. That, like adults, kids aren't badgered for being 5 minutes late, or for forgetting something. That, like adults, kids have the freedom to sit, stand, or walk around - freedom to use the toilet, freedom to eat & drink in most places. That, like adults, kids have the freedom to control their own learning.

If we are training our kids to be adults, lets first not make them adults for wrong reasons…then, lets show them what it actually means."

"Practicing a piece of music for four hours requires focused attention, but it is nowhere near as cognitively demanding as a sleepover with 14-year-old girls. Managing status rivalries, negotiating group dynamics, understanding social norms, navigating the distinction between self & group — these & other social tests impose cognitive demands that blow away any intense tutoring session or a class at Yale.

Yet mastering these arduous skills is at the very essence of achievement. Most people work in groups. We do this because groups are much more efficient at solving problems than individuals…

This skill set is not taught formally, but it is imparted through arduous experiences. These are exactly the kinds of difficult experiences Chua shelters her children from by making them rush home to hit the homework table.

Chua would do better to see the classroom as a cognitive break from the truly arduous tests of childhood…"

Education Research Report: Middle school is when the right friends may matter most
"The study's findings clearly show that in the middle school years "a great deal of learning is taking place that is not being attended to," said Dishion, director of the Child and Family Center and professor of school psychology. "Puberty is taking place. The brain is changing rapidly. Kids' brains are almost wired to be reading the social world to see how they fit in, and the school is the arena for it."

These transitional years may be pivotal, Dishion said. In a previous longitudinal study, he said, he and colleagues looked at the impacts of peer relationships of young people at ages 13, 15 and 17 to look for predictive indicators of life adjustments at age 24. Those influences at age 13 -- going back to middle school -- were the most influential, he noted. While instruction is school is vitally important, he said, it may be that more eyes should be looking at shifting peer relationships."

SpeEdChange: A Middle School that Works [Project-based everything, individually crafted, team focused, individual education plans for all, "extra" curricular]
"The middle school is really just junior high school continued, & that was always a bad idea. Kids stumble through a bizarrely carved up yet age-dependent curriculum, & nothing could be less appropriate. There is no age range w/ a greater range of individual skills no matter the birth date, & there is no age range where getting kids interested in school is harder…kids 11-14 have a million things, really important things, to learn - about themselves, society, life, their bodies, & almost none of those things are taught in schools.

Meanwhile, the grades, subject areas, sports teams, honor rolls - even corridors - of middle school are essentially designed (a) to encourage bullying, & (b) to make kids see school as worthless & irrelevant.

…divide Middle School Grades into 9 large, & 3 "mini" project-based experiences…which kids choose. Completely interdisciplinary…

Kids would pick three 10-week experiences & 1 shorter experience each year, and that is what they would do all day."

Young people appreciate that kind of experience. When I was a teenager I felt my life was constrained by rules, school, my parents. I wanted to feel like I was empowered & different, that's why super heroes, comics, manga, & video games filled my needs. When I got older I realized power is not free, it comes with responsibility. I wanted to have a better understanding of life & the world around us. A lot of the greatest artists, their work is always about life & the world. I think there needs to be that for video games…

"What Porter sees as most important is to teach teenagers and model for them are the seven grown-up skills:

6. ability to maintain boundaries, and
7. capacity for life-long learning.

Porter also offers five things teenagers need from adults:
1. articulating to them the difference between wants vs. needs,
2. responding to them vs. reacting with emotion,
3. relating to them vs. indentifying with them,
4. being friendly to them vs. being friends with them, and
5. focusing on their needs vs. focusing on one’s own needs.

The Do's and Don’ts section at the end of the book is worth the purchase price alone."

What Is It About 20-Somethings? - [This piece has popped up everywhere.]
"KENISTON CALLED IT youth, Arnett calls it emerging adulthood; whatever it’s called, the delayed transition has been observed for years. …“It’s somewhat terrifying,” writes a 25-year-old…“to think about all the things I’m supposed to be doing in order to ‘get somewhere’ successful: ‘Follow your passions, live your dreams, take risks, network w/ the right people, find mentors, be financially responsible, volunteer, work, think about or go to grad school, fall in love & maintain personal well-being, mental health & nutrition.’ When is there time to just be & enjoy?” Adds a 24-year-old: “…It’s almost as if having a range of limited options would be easier.”

While the complaints of these young people are heartfelt, they are also the complaints of the privileged.

The fact that emerging adulthood is not universal is one of the strongest arguments against Arnett’s claim that it is a new developmental stage. If emerging adulthood is so important, why is it even possible to skip it?"

Reading through the curriculum, I recognized how my life experiences could fit into a prescribed outline for an undergraduate education: the one I had supposedly missed out on. "Law enforcement has been stepping in to control sexting, but Lenhart worries they are of Phillip Alpert...[at] 18 years old he had a fight with 16-year-old girlfriend. In a fit of rage, he forwarded naked photo of her to their friends & family. Alpert was prosecuted and found guilty of sending out child pornography. He's now a registered sex offender. When Reading Becomes Work
"The authors of the Kaiser report attribute the decline in elective reading to greater amounts of homework; reading is viewed as work, so leisure becomes an escape from work. It's worth asking, then, what happens in these late elementary and middle school years to turn reading into labor — and one answer must surely be the prominence of textbooks. In most schools, education becomes divided along subject lines, and these subjects are taught through comprehensive (and extremely expensive) textbooks.

The rituals of textbook use are so familiar as to be part of the American landscape...Yet textbooks typically fail to provide the most basic conditions for readerly engagement. They are great vehicles for generating corporate profits, but poor ones for creating readers. They fail young readers on four dimensions of reading — authorship, form, venue, and duration."

"Investigating Systems is a free course of study designed primarily for adolescents and older students, working in small, cooperative groups. It's downloadable from this page. The program's overarching aim is expanding learner ability to "make sense" of reality, an aim we consider essential to the achievement of all other legitimate aims of a general education. The activities in Investigating Systems rely heavily on ordinary, first-hand user experience, require the use of all thought processes, progress slowly through increasing levels of conceptual (as distinct from textual) complexity, and, as is true in all attempts to make sense of experience, move constantly across and beyond arbitrary disciplinary boundaries. Its final "product" is meant to be a comprehensive, seamless, systemically integrated, permanent, "master mental model of reality"--a kind of template which, superimposed on real-world experience, routinely translates information into knowledge, and knowledge into wisdom."
