The Listening Machine
"The Listening Machine is an automated system that generates a continuous piece of music based on the activity of 500 Twitter users around the United Kingdom. Their conversations, thoughts and feelings are translated into musical patterns in real time, which you can tune in to at any point through any web-connected device.

It is running from May until October 2012 on The Space, the new on-demand digital arts channel from the BBC and Arts Council England. The piece will continue to develop and grow over time, adjusting its responses to social patterns and generating subtly new musical output.

The Listening Machine was created by Daniel Jones, Peter Gregson and Britten Sinfonia."

Welcome to the post-digital world, an exhilarating return to civility – via Facebook and Lady Gaga | Simon Jenkins | Comment is free | The Guardian
"Post-digital is not anti-digital. It extends digital into the beyond. The web becomes not a destination in itself but a route map to somewhere real. In Marshall McLuhan's terminology, it is cold where live is hot. This is why concerts did not die with the invention of records, but thrived on the difference. The screen relieves loneliness, as once did letters and phones, but it remains a window on the world, not a door. You cannot download the thunderous beat and sweaty presence of thousands at a Lady Gaga concert, any more than you can make love on Facebook, much as some try. You have to go somewhere for it to happen.

I find this return to civility exhilarating not from any animus against technology. I do not buy Carr's thesis that the internet is somehow scrambling our brains, that we are losing the ability to read long sentences or handle complex information critically…"

LiveWork Portland
"LiveWorkPortland is an effort to increase the visibility of the creative community in Portland, Maine, with the explicit goal of growing that community both in its numbers and it’s economic impact on the city. LiveWorkPortland is an ongoing marketing campaign—and advertisement for Portland, updated daily. Who is our target audience? Primarily talented and resourceful people who are living and working in other metro areas that have the means and drive to set up shop here and add to our community. As a virtuous benefit, we believe that the same kinds of content and community engagement that will make Portland more attractive and knowable to people “from away,” will also help us know ourselves better here and further integrate and energize the existing creative economy in Portland."

Warren Ellis: On real versus digital experiences (Wired UK)
"What we've discovered is that the physical experience still has meaning and, in fact, has become sharpened. Gigs are still attended not just because of the music, nor even for being in proximity to the human beings actually playing the music, but because they come with an atmosphere and shared sense of being there together. Even live albums or professional TV coverage won't give you that. I can't help feeling that watching a live stream of some distant gig you really want to be at would be somewhat saddening, if not deadening."

Future Perfect » The 3 Audiences
"There are 3 audiences to every presentation: the people in the room; the people tuning in online in real or close to real time; and history. The presenter needs to consider all three.

‘History’ is increasingly the digital memory of event – it starts with the conversations leading up to, during and after the event – it’s the photos posted online, the retweeted quotes, the barbs, the likes, the references, the downloads. The presenter can’t control history but she can nudge it in the right direction.

For any given presentation what artifacts do you leave behind? Where are they linked from? How can they be repurposed, reused? And what is the thread that links them back to you and what you’ve done?

Who is the gatekeeper of your history?

What is their motivation both now and in the future?"

Eddy
"Eddy is a media aggregation platform built for the public display of up-to-the-minute activity on realtime services like Twitter. It offers three primary features: rapid collection and curation of what people are saying about an event, moderation of acceptable material, and speedy, reliable republishing of these conversational streams. Setup of the application is fast and easy, and made specifically for use by interactive media designers. Eddy makes data available in formats specifically designed for publishing on the web, allowing developers to quickly iterate design concepts with real world data and to launch without fuss."

Computer says get a life – and we have | Simon Jenkins - Times Online - "The money is now being made in supplying a public craving not for technology but for human experience. It lies in flesh and blood. Live is live."
"What is happening is a reversal of history. Artists can no longer sell the products of their genius because the internet supplies it virtually for free. What can be sold is that genius in the flesh"
