cloudhead - knowmad
"if a nomad is a person that roams and wanders in search of new pastures and hunting grounds rather than settling down permanently in one location * then …

A knowmad is a person that roams and wanders in search of new knowledge, skills, and experiences, rather than settling down permanently in one specialized silo of awareness.

A knowmad is not a nomadic knowledge worker …
roaming from coffee shop to boardroom with a laptop under her arm. The term doesn’t belong to the workplace because
a knowmad doesn’t work, she plays … like a child or an artist.

“The primitive hunter or fisherman did no work, any more than does the poet, painter, or thinker of today. Where the whole man is involved there is no work. Work begins with the division of labor and the specialization of functions”—McLuhan

* (nomas = wander, nomos = pasture)"

cloudhead - school (part II)
"“The challenges of a new century demand more time in the classroom.”“Our school calendar is based upon the agrarian economyand not too many of our kids are working the fields today.” —Obama

Hold on …Our school system is based on the industrial economy:schools as factories, classrooms as assembly lines, knowledge as an endlessly repeatable product. The calendar is the least of our worries. Our education is as fragmented, disconnected and hierarchical as the industrial age jobs it was designed to prepare us for. Our entire school system is out of tune with our electronic culture.More time in the classroom is hardly the fix."

cloudhead - Cooperation vs Collaboration
"When collaborating, people work together (co-labor) on a single shared goal…

When cooperating, people perform together (co-operate) while working on selfish yet common goals…

For centuries collaboration has powered most of our society’s institutions. This is true of everything from our schools to our governments where we have worked together through consensus to build systems of increasing complexity.

But today, cooperation is fuelling most of the disruptive innovations of our time. In virtually every aspect of our culture, the old guard is being replaced by cooperative, self organizing, distributed systems."

"How can we ensure that collaboration and cooperation coexist without threatening the organic, self organizing nature of connectives?"

cloudhead - The Anti-Manifesto Manifesto
"Manifestos are from an era when information moved slowly, but at the speed of light, there’s no time to declare your intentions … everything is made public as it happens.

Today a traditional manifesto arrives as a footnote to reality, just in time to make sense of a motion that’s already transpired.

Our actions and the reactions they excite are now the only meaningful declaration possible. The manifesto can no longer be separated from the reality it hopes to manifest.

New crowd funding platforms like Kickstarter point to a new kind of manifesto - one that merges declaration, action, and response into a single connective motion.

The new manifesto turns goals into roles for both actors and audience alike … before the environment or the goals have a chance to change."

"Subjects and textbooks are just fences
arbitrary boundaries that corral learners
and keep them from wandering off into other territory.
A plot of land in exchange for a horizon.
Exploration replaced with Epcot Center.

Outside of school
science stumbles into art which tumbles into economics.
which is one click away from Picasso
which is right next to the photo you just posted on facebook.

Knowledge divided into subjects divided into classrooms
divided into textbooks divided into chapters
makes no sense
when everything touches everything."

cloudhead - hypercity
"the web is hypercity - virtualizing and extending every process and relationship that grew out of the urban environment. With the remediation of the city comes a new understanding of citizenship.

hypercity is quite literally the rebirth of the citizen … a reawakening of the city’s exhausted civic potential."

cloudhead - The revolution will not be centralized [via: http://bettyann.tumblr.com/post/6092631637 ]
"[…]

There will be no leaders or followers
no winners or losers
There will be no beginning, middle or end
because the revolution will not be centralized.

[…]

The revolution can not be built, designed, or engineered … The revolution can only grow. You are the seed, you are the soil, and you are the buzzing of the bee."

cloudhead - cross
"Science begins with a subject and an object.
Religion begins with a creator and the created.
The illusion is the same.
There is dogma in any.thing that claims to contain every.thing.

God is a verb
not some omnipotent ruler looking down on all of this.
And if there was a big bang,
you and I aren’t something at the end of the process;
You and I are the big bang …
The original force of the universe.
We are the creator and the created
Inseparable from the creating.

-x—x-x—-x-x-x-x-x—x-x—x—x-

Yet the conflict between science and religion drags on … while …
on the streets, the Beatles are still more popular than Jesus Christ,
quantum physics reads like a zen riddle,
and techno teenagers rely on rhythm and rhyme,
- not reason -
to make sense of living at the speed of light."

(hm) Electric Literacy Playground
[Wayback link: https://web.archive.org/web/20101028060343/http://www.headmine.net/electric-literacy-playground ]

"In the 20th century, youth culture gave birth to a new sensory training ground that helped us explore and adapt to the emerging electronic environment."

""To think of such a culture as 'preliterate' is already to distort it. It is like thinking of a horse as an automobile without wheels." - Walter Ong"

"Since we are, like the ancient Athenians, living through the beginning of a major technological revolution that is putting pressures on every aspect of our cultural fabric, de Kerckhove's study of the Greek theater should make us pause and ask ...

"What would a playground for electric literacy look like?" and "Have we already created such an environment?""

"What would a sensory training ground for electric literacy feel like?"

"The distinctions between art and utility are already beginning to blur in our digital world."

Play is Art in the Age of Networked Reproduction
"Play is Art... is an exploration into the evolving meaning of art in the 21st century. There are six parts, the first two are here as a draft. More to come .... peaceandlove from @shiftctrlesc // #playisart"

"The artist is no longer a fringe member of society but a role that all of us must play in order to sustain our electronic culture. In the 21st century, the distinctions between art and life will disappear, and play will once again become the ground for our cultural sense making."
