It's almost worth buying one of the iOS editions just for research purposes, even if you don't need a task manager. Live with it for a few days, feel how considered it all is, how there are no real dead-ends, wasted movement.

Is it weird that I feel like Things is made in a way I'd expect a Japanese temple carpenter to make an app? Does that make any sense? It feels like an app made of hinoki, like it could have been plucked from a nook inside of Ise Shrine."]

High Tower Walk in Hollywood Heights | Walking Tour | Travel | KCET
"Tucked between the Hollywood Bowl and Camrose Drive in the Hollywood Hills sits the cozy and unusual High Tower neighborhood, a place that feels like an exciting peek into old Hollywood. The homes along Alta Loma Terrace, the pedestrian pathway at the top of the hill, are accessible either by stairs or by the Bolognese-style "high tower" elevator at the northern end of High Tower Drive. The Carl Kay-designed duplex immediately adjacent to the tower was featured as Philip Marlowe's apartment in the 1973 classic "The Long Goodbye."

The following walking tour of the neighborhood is adapted from my book "Walking LA: 38 Walking Tours Exploring Stairways, Streets and Buildings You Never Knew Existed". Free street parking is available on Camrose Drive, although neighborhood parking restrictions apply when shows are playing at the Hollywood Bowl."

We have to stop daydreaming about this « Re-educate Seattle
"we’re trying something new: What if we invited people to come to campus and just to do something they love doing?

[Examples]…

This is a different kind of teaching in that it’s spontaneously responding to a student’s curiosity in the moment. This is the kind of activity that enriches the school environment.

* * *

Will these new ideas work? I don’t know. But we’re going to find out.

There are two things we’re not going to. We’re not going to force students to participate in a battery of required activities, then use punishments and rewards to ensure compliance.

And, we’re not going to sit around watching Sir Ken Robinson’s “Do Schools Kill Creativity?” TED talk, lament the sad state of education in this country, & daydream about what it would be like if school was different.

As a society, we have to stop daydreaming about this."

Systems/Layers by Nurri Kim & Adam Greenfield | Diffusion eBooks + StoryCubes
"Around the world, urban form and metropolitan experience are being transformed by the presence of networked computation. The urban fabric and discrete elements in it are newly empowered to capture, process, transmit, display and even act on information. At the same time, our daily tactics of doing and being — practices of citying that have remained invisible throughout recorded history, and have generally been lost to that history — are now being rendered explicit and gathered up by that same network.

Nurri Kim and Adam Greenfield of Do projects have run “walkshops” devoted to exploring these transformation and their consequences in cities worldwide. Through the Transformations series, they offer Systems/Layers, a quick guide to running a walkshop for yourself, covering the particulars of choosing a terrain, knowing what to look for, recruiting participants, and promoting your event."

San Diego Art News « Last Blog On Earth
"Hey art addicts—get ready to start making longer drives down south. If you want to keep up with the most interesting art shows in town, you’re going to have to add the Southwestern College Art Gallery to your list of go-to venues.

Longtime artist Perry Vasquez has stepped in as co-director of the gallery alongside John Lewis. Vasquez just sent CityBeat a list of upcoming exhibitions, and there are definitely some shows you won’t want to miss. What else would you expect from an artist like Vasquez, a guy whose poster images have proliferated around the globe (see “Keep on Crossin” pictured right) and whose performance art is always somewhat shocking?"

"Technomania Circus is difficult to explain, but easy to enjoy. You never know what you'll find happening in the Blackyard: blacklight illusion, performance art, dance, puppetry, music, and more. Whatever you find, it's never ordinary.

From our inception in North Park's Xanth Club in 1999, to a several-year stint in the Bay Area, to the current location at the Center for Amusing Arts in Barrio Logan, we've been breaking down the barriers between performer and audience, between culture and crudity, and changing everything you thought you knew about theater in the process. We strive to remain all-inclusive yet retain our edgy and experimental nature."

"Visual convergences that amuse and surprise" by Volumes and Visions
"Lawrence Weschler -- formerly a New Yorker staff writer, biographer of San Diego based artist Robert Irwin and current head of the New York Institute for Humanities at New York University -- is spending some time at the Getty Research Institute these days. And while he is in Southern California, he is giving some talks, including one at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library in La Jolla on March 11 at 7:30 p.m.

The title of his talk could be more forthright: "A Defense of Loose-Synapsed Moments: Towards a Typology of Convergences." But his topic is a good one: how images in the world, most often by chance, look a lot like other images. A photograph might look like a painting without even trying to."

BLDGBLOG Expedition to the Geoglyphs of Nowhere - Eventbrite
"In the desert 100 miles northeast of Los Angeles is a suburb abandoned in advance of itself: the unfinished extension of a place called California City. Visible from above now as a series of badly paved streets carved into the dust and gravel, the outer edges of California City are like some peculiarly American response to the Nazca Lines. The uninhabited street plan has become an abstract geoglyph—unintentional land art visible from airplanes—not a thriving community at all.

Confluence Project
"In 2000, a group of Pacific Northwest Native American tribes and civic groups from Washington and Oregon asked Maya Lin to participate in a project commemorating the bicentennial of the journey of the Corps of Discovery—the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804–06. These disparate groups were brought together by the hope that Maya Lin would rethink what the commemoration of the bicentennial could be. Out of this collaboration came the Confluence Project: a series of seven art installations along the Columbia River Basin created to evoke the history of the Lewis and Clark Expedition and the tremendous changes it brought to the Pacific Northwest. Cheese Making Illustrated
"How to make cheese at home. This recipe for a basic hard cheese works for any kind of milk. Iprimarily use my own fresh goats' milk, but have made it quite successfullywith cow's milk purchased from the grocery as well as raw cow's milk froma local farmer. I always use rennet tablets becauseof their dependability and availability from many supermarkets . I usually make 5 gallons of milk into cheese at a time in a 5 gallon Volrath stainless steel pot. Its thick aluminum bottom pad prevents scorching. Five gallons of milk produces a 5-6 pound wheel of cheese . I suggest you try several other simplier cheese related projects beforeyou try making a hard cheese. I have written a page on Beginning Cheese Making for this purpose. It might also be wise to master the process for one gallon of milk before making cheese from 5 gallons."
