Top 10 data mining algorithms in plain English | rayli.net
Today, I’m going to explain in plain English the top 10 most influential data mining algorithms as voted on by 3 separate panels in this survey paper.

Once you know what they are, how they work, what they do and where you can find them, my hope is you’ll have this blog post as a springboard to learn even more about data mining.

The AI Revolution: Our Immortality or Extinction | Wait But Why
The reason this post took three weeks to finish is that as I dug into research on Artificial Intelligence, I could not believe what I was reading. It hit me pretty quickly that what’s happening in the world of AI is not just an important topic, but by far THE most important topic for our future. So I wanted to learn as much as I could about it, and once I did that, I wanted to make sure I wrote a post that really explained this whole situation and why it matters so much. Not shockingly, that became outrageously long, so I broke it into two parts. This is Part 2.

Machine Learning
In this course, you'll learn about some of the most widely used and successful machine learning techniques. You'll have the opportunity to implement these algorithms yourself, and gain practice with them. You will also learn some of practical hands-on tricks and techniques (rarely discussed in textbooks) that help get learning algorithms to work well. This is an "applied" machine learning class, and we emphasize the intuitions and know-how needed to get learning algorithms to work in practice, rather than the mathematical derivations.

trending topics in tweets about cheese; part1 « brain of matpalm
what does it mean for a topic to be ‘trending’? consider the following time series (430e3 tweets containing cheese collected over a month period bucketed into hourly timeslots). without a formal definition we can just look at this and say that the series was trending where there was a spike just before time 600. as a start then let’s just define a trend as a value that was greater than was ‘expected’.

bayes_motel – Bayesian classification for Ruby
As you can see, a tweet is just a hash of variables. So which variables are a better indicator of spam? I don’t know and chances are you don’t either. But if we create a corpus of ham tweets and a corpus of spam tweets, we can train a Bayesian classifier with the two datasets and it will figure out which variable values are seen often in spam and which in ham.
