Mac external displays for designers and developers
If you’re considering an external display for your Mac, there’s a few important decisions to make. Apple doesn’t sell external displays any more, so you can’t just default to their wisdom. That’s an issue, because not all displays are well suited for Macs.

Is Your Computer Stable?
Everyone breathes a sigh of relief when their newly built computer boots up for the first time, no matter how many times they've done it before. But booting is only the beginning of the story. Yeah, it boots, great. Color me unimpressed. What we really need to know is whether that computer is stable.

Although commodity computer parts are more reliable every year, and vendors test their parts plenty before they ship them, there's no guarantee all those parts will work reliably together, in your particular environment, under your particular workload. And there's always the possibility, however slim, of getting very, very unlucky with subtly broken components.

Because we're rational scientists, we test stuff in our native environment, and collect data to prove our computer is stable. Right? So after we boot, we test.

I just leave it here — The conference wifi checklist
After organizing some conferences and attended even more I often experienced the struggle to setup a working conference WiFi. Although learnings and mistakes has been made multiple times I couldn’t find a easy to follow resource to get the basics right, so here is my take to create such resource. Its separated into two main sections “what to get” and “what to do”.

Technical Machine
Tessel is an Internet-connected microcontroller for software developers.

Embedded development is as easy as coding a web or mobile app. Or prototype a physical product, and refine the experience with telemetry and updates over Wifi. Create new ways to connect your life beyond a screen.

Tessel runs JavaScript right on the device—no server necessary. Use your own IDE and libraries to program it, just like web development. Uploading new firmware is as easy as tessel push!

Tessel supports packages from NPM to leverage the growing Node.js community and capabilities. That's HTTP, Twitter, web server, color, and async support right out of the box.

Retina MacBook Pro: maximizing battery life with gfxCardStatus | Ars Technica
But we've been using the Retina MacBook Pro a little more since our review published a couple of weeks ago, and have discovered that the massive 95Whr battery is actually capable of lasting at least 8 hours or more. To achieve this, we overrode Apple's automatic graphics switching using the donation-ware app gfxCardStatus to force OS X to rely solely on Intel's integrated HD4000 GPU.

How to Take Care of Your Li-ion Battery
Do not let it run out completely all the time. Full discharge puts a lot of strain on the battery; Do not keep a Li-ion battery fully charged all the time, either. If you don't use your battery it might suffer from capacity loss; Keep your battery in cooler temperatures. Hot hot heat is not good for it; If you're gonna store your battery, leave 40%-50% charge in and store it in a cool place (i.e. fridge).

Clonezilla
Clonezilla, based on DRBL, partclone, Partition Image, ntfsclone and udpcast, allows you to do bare metal backup and recovery. Two types of Clonezilla are available, Clonezilla live and Clonezilla SE (server edition). Clonezilla live is suitable for single machine backup and restore. While Clonezilla SE is for massive deployment, it can clone many (40 plus!) computers simultaneously. Clonezilla saves and restores only used blocks in the harddisk. This increases the clone efficiency. At the NCHC's Classroom C, Clonezilla SE was used to clone 41 computers simultaneously. It took only about 10 minutes to clone a 5.6 GBytes system image to all 41 computers via multicasting!

We’ll get in to the nitty-gritty about the impact of this in a bit, but first let’s start with Advanced Format. What is it? In a nutshell, it’s replacing the traditional 512 byte hard drive sector with a 4 kilobyte (4,096B) hard drive sector for a number of practical and technological reasons. Advanced Format is the name Western Digital is giving to drives implementing 4KB sectors.
