viraptor/reverse-interview: Questions to ask the company during your interview
This is a list of questions which may be interesting to a tech job applicant. The points are not ordered and many may not apply to a given position, or work type. It was started as my personal list of questions, which grew over time to include both things I'd like to see more of and red flags which I'd like to avoid. I've also noticed how few questions were asked by people I interviewed and I think those were missed opportunities.

How to run a small social network site for your friends
Since August 2018 I have run a social network site called Friend Camp for about 50 of my friends. I think Friend Camp is a really nice place, and my friends seem to agree that it has enriched our lives. I'd like to see more places like Friend Camp on the internet, and this document is my attempt to provide some practical guidance as to how you might run a social network site like this.

Friend Camp is an intentionally small social network so the home page doesn't look like much if you don't have a login. You can read some of our policies if you like.

Startup idea checklist | defmacro
I’ve been tinkering with different startup ideas and needed a good checklist to think through them. There are great templates for this already: The YC application, Amazon’s internal press release, and Sequoia’s Writing a Business Plan. I found myself mixing and tweaking these templates because they don’t exactly match my model of the world, so I wrote up my own list.

How to shoot with the ricoh GR by Jake Szymanski
The Ricoh GR and GR II are two of the most popular cameras for cyclists. It's a great choice because it fits perfectly into a cycling jersey pocket, is super durable, easy to use, and produces exceptional images for it's size.

I've been shooting with the Ricoh GR as my primary camera for around five years, since before the GR II came out. I get tons of DMs on Instagram and questions from friends about my recommendations and tips for shooting with this sturdy little camera.

End vibrating, noisy disc brakes with a proper bed-in process | CyclingTips
A bed-in process is required in any metallic brake system, including the brakes on a car, and your disc-brake gravel or road bike is no exception. It’s a simple procedure, less than 10 minutes long, and ensures that the first time you really need those discs, they’re working at full strength.

To put it in terms familiar to rim-brake aficionados, hopping on your bike without bedding-in new disc rotors and pads is like rolling down a mountain pass with rim brake pads that aren’t properly adjusted — toed out, for example. They’ll work, but not as well as they should.

How to Arrange Your iPad or iPhone's Home Screen from a Mac using Apple Configurator 2 – The Sweet Setup
A while ago, Apple updated iTunes and (unfortunately) we lost the ability to organize apps on the home screens of our iOS devices. There is, however, another app that is free and made by Apple that you can use to complete this task! Apple Configurator 2 is actually designed for managing devices for schools or businesses, but it’s available in the App Store and you don’t need to be in either of those groups to use it.

Mountainsides — Postlight — Digital product studio
In every proposal, we share an image that visualizes this more fluid approach to shipping great products. We call it the Mountainside:
It is a diagram that represents how we think about a product or platform effort. The X-axis is time and the Y-axis represents energy and resources. The four “ingredients” represent the various centers of discipline at Postlight. It’s a little messy. And we’re ok with that. It’s sort of like a Gantt chart that was left on the stove too long, leaving all those neat and tidy bars melting into one another.

Publishing games - Game development | MDN
HTML5 games have a huge advantage over native in terms of publishing and distribution — you have the freedom of distribution, promotion and monetization of your game on the Web, rather than each version being locked into a single store controlled by one company. You can benefit from the web being truly multiplatform. This series of articles looks at the options you have when you want to publish and distribute your game, and earn something out of it while you wait for it to become famous.

The Open Graph protocol
The Open Graph protocol enables any web page to become a rich object in a social graph. For instance, this is used on Facebook to allow any web page to have the same functionality as any other object on Facebook.

While many different technologies and schemas exist and could be combined together, there isn't a single technology which provides enough information to richly represent any web page within the social graph. The Open Graph protocol builds on these existing technologies and gives developers one thing to implement. Developer simplicity is a key goal of the Open Graph protocol which has informed many of the technical design decisions.

The Hacker's Diet - How to lose weight and hair through stress and poor nutrition
The Hacker's Diet, notwithstanding its silly subtitle, is a serious book about how to lose weight and permanently maintain whatever weight you desire. It treats dieting and weight control from an engineering and management standpoint, and provides the tools and an understanding of why they work and how to use them that permit the reader to gain control of their own weight. The book is intended primarily for busy, successful engineers, programmers, and managers who have struggled unsuccessfully in the past to lose weight and avoid re-gaining it. Computer-based tools and experiments in Microsoft Excel or the Palm Computing Platform are available, as well as an online Web application, but a computer is not necessary to use the techniques described in the book; paper and pencil alternatives are provided.

What every software engineer should know about search
Want to build or improve a search experience? Start here.

Ask a software engineer: “How would you add search functionality to your product?” or “How do I build a search engine?” You’ll probably immediately hear back something like: “Oh, we’d just launch an ElasticSearch cluster. Search is easy these days.”

But is it? Numerous current products still have suboptimal search experiences. Any true search expert will tell you that few engineers have a very deep understanding of how search engines work, knowledge that’s often needed to improve search quality.

Even though many open source software packages exist, and the research is vast, the knowledge around building solid search experiences is limited to a select few. Ironically, searching online for search-related expertise doesn’t yield any recent, thoughtful overviews.
