How to shoot with the ricoh GR by Jake Szymanski
The Ricoh GR and GR II are two of the most popular cameras for cyclists. It's a great choice because it fits perfectly into a cycling jersey pocket, is super durable, easy to use, and produces exceptional images for it's size.

I've been shooting with the Ricoh GR as my primary camera for around five years, since before the GR II came out. I get tons of DMs on Instagram and questions from friends about my recommendations and tips for shooting with this sturdy little camera.

End vibrating, noisy disc brakes with a proper bed-in process | CyclingTips
A bed-in process is required in any metallic brake system, including the brakes on a car, and your disc-brake gravel or road bike is no exception. It’s a simple procedure, less than 10 minutes long, and ensures that the first time you really need those discs, they’re working at full strength.

To put it in terms familiar to rim-brake aficionados, hopping on your bike without bedding-in new disc rotors and pads is like rolling down a mountain pass with rim brake pads that aren’t properly adjusted — toed out, for example. They’ll work, but not as well as they should.

What every software engineer should know about search
Want to build or improve a search experience? Start here.

Ask a software engineer: “How would you add search functionality to your product?” or “How do I build a search engine?” You’ll probably immediately hear back something like: “Oh, we’d just launch an ElasticSearch cluster. Search is easy these days.”

But is it? Numerous current products still have suboptimal search experiences. Any true search expert will tell you that few engineers have a very deep understanding of how search engines work, knowledge that’s often needed to improve search quality.

Even though many open source software packages exist, and the research is vast, the knowledge around building solid search experiences is limited to a select few. Ironically, searching online for search-related expertise doesn’t yield any recent, thoughtful overviews.

How to change where screenshots are saved on Mac
Taking a screenshot on a Mac is effortless. Simply hold down Command-Shift-3 to capture the entire screen, or Command-Shift-4 to capture a highlighted area. You can even hold down Command-Shift-4 and then hit the space bar to screenshot a specific window or menu.

The only annoying part is that screenshots are saved to the desktop by default, which creates a cluttered mess if you take a lot of screenshots. The good news is that there is an easy solution for changing the location where screenshots are saved.

Is Your Computer Stable?
Everyone breathes a sigh of relief when their newly built computer boots up for the first time, no matter how many times they've done it before. But booting is only the beginning of the story. Yeah, it boots, great. Color me unimpressed. What we really need to know is whether that computer is stable.

Although commodity computer parts are more reliable every year, and vendors test their parts plenty before they ship them, there's no guarantee all those parts will work reliably together, in your particular environment, under your particular workload. And there's always the possibility, however slim, of getting very, very unlucky with subtly broken components.

Because we're rational scientists, we test stuff in our native environment, and collect data to prove our computer is stable. Right? So after we boot, we test.

BEST ROAD BIKE TIRES | In The Know Cycling
What tires should I get? It seems like a pretty easy question. Actually, it’s not.

If you don’t want to get into the details, here’s my bottom line. For the best combination of minimum rolling resistance, maximum aerodynamic performance and confident handling, order a pair of Continental Grand Prix 4000S II clincher tires online in the 23C/23mm size and pump them up to between 95psi/6.5bar (lighter riders, softer ride) and 115psi/8bar (heavier riders, firmer ride) and use a light butyl inner tube.

The God Login
How would God build this login dialog? The answer is, of course, God wouldn't bother to build a login dialog at all. Every user would already be logged into GodApp the second they loaded the page because God knows who they are. Authoritatively, even.

This is obviously impossible for us, because God isn't one of our investors.

But.. how close can we get to the perfect godlike login experience in Discourse? That's a noble and worthy goal.

How to Create a Large Wireless Network
One day I had to install a network for 8,500 square feet (850 m2) of living space, all on one level, and cover almost an acre of land outdoors. That required several wireless devices, all connected together.

It's easy to do, but only if you know which secret boxes to click in the set up program.

Oddly no one has written down how to do it — until now.

Here's how.

My Thoughts on Cycling and Weight Loss | The Radavist
That’s over four years of steady, slow weight loss. Any doctor I’ve talked to has told me that is the key. Weight loss should come from a lifestyle change, from diet, to physical exercise and it should happen over time. If you rush it, you’ll do your body more harm than good.
That said, here are the main changes I made with my lifestyle. Granted, you shouldn’t try to go all in here. Just make small changes. Cutting yourself off from your favorite foods sucks. Instead, treat them as a reward.

Structuring Sinatra Applications
I love Sinatra. I use it for practically everything. For me, Sinatra has the perfect blend of simplicity and abstraction. I can understand the full stack, dip into the source when I need to, and extend the framework how I see fit.

However the bare-bones nature of Sinatra can come at a cost. Sinatra leaves much more of the decision making around your application's structure, layout and libraries up to you. This can be a bit daunting if you're just getting into Ruby web app development, which I think is one of the reasons why Sinatra is mainly the realm of more experienced developers looking for a bloat-free alternative to Rails.

Over the years I've put together a few conventions that I share between all my Sinatra apps, and in this article I'm going to elaborate on those. I've also created a gem called Trevi which, if you want to follow this approach, will go ahead and do all the manual lifting for you by generating a Sinatra scaffold.
