Strings
Windows equivalent of Linux/Unix strings command to list strings from within a binary file. Free download. Unzip, runs straight out of the box. Accept license first time run, won't ask thereafter. Useful for reverse engineering proprietary binary files.

GOCR
Free OCR software. Involved to setup. Not out-of-the box. Have to build it. Fails to build with make install on 1) DOS because it refers to a hard-coded path on the D: drive - most likely dependent on the developers' machine's setup. 2) Mandrake Linux because it tries to change the permissions of the machines own /usr/local/bin path. It shouldn't have to do this - altering what's already there.

Re: Assign a delimiter variable - nntp.perl.org
my $delimiter = "\\"; # for dos
my @pathComponents = split( /\Q$delimiter/, $pathAndFile );

The /\Q is so obscure. Yet another example of perl's obscurity; other languages would just accept the delimiter as parameter without that nonsense
