Economic Security Index: Putting a Face on American Economic Security
"The survey was fielded in the spring and the fall of 2009 as part of the Panel Survey of the American National Election Studies. It measured a wide range of events and perceptions that could leave families feeling insecure, focusing on four broad domains of life: employment, medical care, wealth, and familial arrangements. "

Sacred Modernities: Rethinking Modernity in a Post-Secular Age – conference page
The aim of this conference is to take stock of these transformations in the context of what is often referred to as a ‘post-secular’ age comprised of ‘multiple modernities’. Its agenda is emphatically interdisciplinary and welcomes scholars from the fields of history, sociology, cultural studies, theology, and others. In the same spirit, the conference adopts a broad, abundant understanding of the term ‘sacred’ to encompass not only formal religious worldviews, but also that which, in whatever fashion, disturbs, complicates, and perhaps abolishes, the distinction between the sacred and the secular.

Johann Hari: The Republican Party Is Turning Into A Cult
These aren't fringe phenomena: a Research 2000 poll found that a majority of Republicans and Southerners say Obama wasn't born in the US, or aren't sure. ...No amount of hard evidence -- here's his birth certificate, here's a picture of his mother heavily pregnant in Hawaii, here's the announcement of his birth in the local Hawaiian paper -- can pierce this conviction.

This trend has reached its apotheosis this summer with the Republican Party claiming en masse that Obama wants to set up "death panels" to euthanize the old and disabled.

Watchdog: Accounting Tied to Lack of Loan Modification - BusinessWeek
In the Gordian knot that is the financial crisis, there’s a surprising thread that connects many of the most intractable problems, including toxic assets, the small-business lending drought and the apparent reluctance of banks to modify mortgages for struggling homeowners: Last spring’s accounting rules.

Peter Greenaway's multimedia vision of Christ
The thoroughly modern installation is based on a 16th-century painting. Wedding at Cana, Paolo Veronese’s huge painting, was made specifically for San Giorgio’s convent in 1562, but was looted by Napoleon’s army in 1797. Although the original painting is now in the Louvre, the Giorgio Cini Foundation commissioned an exact copy for its original home. It is not merely an imitation, but a clone realised with very advanced techniques developed by the Factum Arte workshop.

Hussman Funds - Weekly Market Comment: Green Shoots over Thin Ice - April 13, 2009
Last year, I didn't think it was conceivable that policy-makers would attempt to address this problem by making lenders whole with public funds. This is an ethical abomination, putting the public in the position of absorbing the losses that should properly be borne by those who provided capital to these institutions. It is not sustainable. What it does is place the public in the position of losing first, but it will not, and cannot prevent the ultimate failure of the debt – for the simple reason that without restructuring, the debt can't be serviced.

Seed: 2009 Will Be a Year of Panic
So 2009 will be a squalid year, a planetary hostage situation surpassing any mere financial crisis, where the invisible hand of the market, a good servant turned a homicidal master, periodically wanders through a miserable set of hand-tied, blindfolded, feebly struggling institutions, corporations, bureaucracies, professions, and academies, and briskly blows one's brains out for no sane reason.
