Social Media Research Toolkit – Social Media Data Stewardship
"The Social Media Research Toolkit is a list of 50+ social media research tools curated by researchers at the Social Media Lab at Ted Rogers School of Management, Ryerson University. The kit features tools that have been used in peer-reviewed academic studies. Many tools are free to use and require little or no programming. Some are simple data collectors such as tweepy, a Python library for collecting tweets and others are a bit more robust such as Netlytic, a multi-platform (Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram) data collector and analyzer, developed by our lab. All of the tools are confirmed available and operational."

Catalogue 2.0 - facet publishing
"Will there be a library catalogue in the future and, if so, what will it look like? In the last 25 years, the library catalogue has undergone an evolution, from card catalogues to OPACs, discovery systems and even linked data applications making library bibliographic data accessible on the web. At the same time, users expectations of what catalogues will be able to offer in the way of discovery have never been higher. This groundbreaking edited collection brings together some of the foremost international cataloguing practitioners and thought leaders, including Lorcan Dempsey, Emmanuelle Bermès, Marshall Breeding and Karen Calhoun, to provide an overview of the current state of the art of the library catalogue and look ahead to see what the library catalogue might become."

CultureLab: How astrocoders have mapped the universe
Ann Finkbeiner is... in A Grand and Bold Thing, an inside look at the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), which has created the most comprehensive 3D map of the universe ever made.

Finkbeiner's story centres on Jim Gunn, the Princeton University astronomer who was awarded the US National Medal of Science in 2008. In the late 1980s, when Gunn began thinking about creating a massive digital survey of the sky, only around 10,000 galaxies had been catalogued. Fast-forward more than a decade, and the SDSS has mapped more than 230 million celestial objects, including more than 930,000 galaxies.

Galaxy Zoo 2
The Galaxy Zoo files contain almost a quarter of a million galaxies which have been imaged with a camera attached to a robotic telescope (the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, no less). In order to understand how these galaxies — and our own — formed, we need your help to classify them according to their shapes — a task at which your brain is better than even the fastest computer.
