DLAx | The Digital Liberal Arts Exchange
"Many schools have recently embarked upon initiatives in digital scholarship – those forms of scholarship largely in the humanities and humanistic social sciences that emphasize digital tools and infrastructure, as well as accompanying expertise and support. These initiatives bring new challenges, such as meeting the growing demand for technical support from faculty and students with trained staff and necessary hardware and software. Even institutions with well-established programs struggle to keep pace."

Home | Academic Preservation Trust
"The Academic Preservation Trust (APTrust) is committed to the creation and management of a sustainable environment for digital preservation. APTrust’s aggregated repository will help solve one of the greatest challenges facing research libraries and their parent institutions – preventing the permanent loss of scholarship and cultural records being produced today. APTrust offers new levels of confidence in the preservation of digital content, up to and including permanent deposit in the Digital Preservation Network (DPN) through our systems.  From the start, an institution that places digital content in APTrust will be able to use our capabilities to recover that content in the event it is lost from the local institutional environment. Disaster recovery is only the first in a list of services APTrust is already developing or considering, all in collaboration with our member community.  Such future services may include format migration, alert systems, access to APTrust-stored content (when that is the desire of the owning institution), and aggregated discovery. As our member institutions combine their expertise and resources to accomplish a common mission, together they will develop scalable solutions, new functionalities, and enriched services that will be offered broadly through APTrust."

Council of Canadian Academies | CCA | Leading in the Digital World: Opportunities for Canada’s Memory Institutions
"Memory institutions (libraries, archives, museums and galleries) are confronted with many challenges, from technological change, resource challenges, and shifting public expectations. Cultural documents are frequently “born digital”, while older materials need to be digitized for better public access. Furthermore, memory institutions of all types face the difficult task of preserving digital files in formats that will remain accessible over the long- term. As one of the most wired populations in the world, Canadians expect their heritage to be accessible and discoverable online. Today, past content and digital information is not always accessible. New ways of acquiring, preserving, and accessing materials are straining the resources of memory institutions but they are also creating new opportunities to present holdings, collaborate amongst one another, and engage the public."

Digital Projects for Special Collections | UCLA Library
"The UCLA Library Special Collections Digital Project Toolkit is designed to support a variety of digital projects that may occur in a special collections library, including collaborative digital humanities projects, boutique and large-scale digitization projects, and projects that include development of a digital platform to provide access to digital content. The Digital Project Toolkit supports the work of archivists and librarians in collaboration with undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, technical staff, and outside contractors. With that in mind, the documentation is designed to be accessible to all potential project participants. UCLA Library uses Confluence and JIRA for project management, collaboration, and tracking."

The InterPARES Project:
"The International Research on Permanent Authentic Records in Electronic Systems (InterPARES) aims at developing the knowledge essential to the long-term preservation of authentic records created and/or maintained in digital form and providing the basis for standards, policies, strategies and plans of action capable of ensuring the longevity of such material and the ability of its users to trust its authenticity. The findings and products of the first three phases of the project can be found on this website."

Home - 4C Project
"4C will help organisations across Europe to invest more effectively in digital curation and preservation. Research in digital preservation and curation has tended to emphasize the cost and complexity of the task in hand. 4C reminds us that the point of this investment is to realise a benefit, so our research must encompass related concepts such as ‘risk’, ‘value’, ‘quality’ and ‘sustainability’."

Huskie Commons: From Theory to Action: Good Enough Digital Preservation for Under-Resourced Cultural Heritage Institutions
"Libraries, archives, museums, and other cultural heritage organizations collect, create, and steward a rapidly increasing volume of digital content. Both research conclusions and professionals’ real-life experiences expose the inherent fragility of this content. The cultural heritage and information science communities have developed guidelines, best practices, policies, procedures, and processes that can enable an organization to achieve high levels of digital preservation. However, these protocols are often complex, leaving many practitioners attempting to address the challenge of preserving digital materials feeling overwhelmed. This is particularly true for professionals serving smaller institutions that are often operating with restricted resources like small staff sizes, a lack of specialized expertise, dated technical infrastructures, and/or limited budgets. This white paper is the result of a three year investigation, funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, of affordable, scalable digital preservation solutions that can be successfully implemented at under-resourced organizations. It reports the results of large-scale testing of several digital preservation tools and services, suggests pragmatic digital preservation options, including an incremental approach to digital preservation practices, and asserts that communities of practice are key to success."

Labor in the Global Digital Economy | The Cybertariat Comes of Age by Ursula Huws | Monthly Review Monthly Review Press
"Ursula Huws ties together disparate economic, cultural, and political phenomena of the last few decades to form a provocative narrative about the shape of the global capitalist economy at present. She examines the way that advanced information and communications technology has opened up new fields of capital accumulation: in culture and the arts, in the privatization of public services, and in the commodification of human sociality by way of mobile devices and social networking. These trends are in turn accompanied by the dramatic restructuring of work arrangements, opening the way for new contradictions and new forms of labor solidarity and struggle around the planet. Labor in the Global Digital Economy is a forceful critique of our dizzying contemporary moment, one that goes beyond notions of mere connectedness or free-flowing information to illuminate the entrenched mechanisms of exploitation and control at the core of capitalism."

Why We Engage: How Theories of Human Behavior Contribute to Our Understanding of Civic Engagement in a Digital Era by Eric Gordon, Jessica Baldwin-Philippi, Martina Balestra :: SSRN
"We present this literature review as a means of exploring the intersection of theories of human behavior with the motivations for and benefits of engaging in civic life. We bring together literature from behavioral economics, sociology, psychology and communication studies to reveal how civic actors, institutions, and decision-making processes have been traditionally understood, and how emerging media tools and practices are forcing their reconsideration. One on One: Jason Merkoski and the View of E-Books From the Inside - NYTimes.com
"So it is refreshing to see Jason Merkoski, a leader of the team that built Amazon’s first Kindle, dispense with the usual techo-utopianism and say, “I think we’ve made a proverbial pact with the devil in digitizing our words.” And this: “If you’re willing to overlook the fact that Big Brother won’t be a politician but an ad man and that he’ll have the face of Google.” Mr. Merkoski even has mixed feelings about Amazon, which he left two years ago. “It’s hard to love Amazon,” he notes. “Not the way we love Apple or a bookstore.”"
