"My work is all related, in one way or another, to critical social theory in the tradition of the Frankfurt School. The hallmark of this tradition is that of close engagement with the social sciences, but in a way that involves a rejection of value-neutrality, in favour of a style of inquiry governed by what Jürgen Habermas once called the “emancipatory interest” of human reason. In the late 20th century, critical theorists became increasingly preoccupied with the so-called “normative foundations of social criticism.” Rather than doing critical theory, they spent most of their time worrying about how a critical theory of society might even be possible, given the all-encompassing nature of culture and ideology. The result has been a generation of critical theorists who seldom get around to actually criticizing anything. This is a dead-end that I have tried to avoid in my work. As a result, there are two distinct dimensions to my writing. I do academic work, which attempts to address questions of normative foundations, and I also do popular work, where I engage in critical commentary."

"David Fleming has been on the faculty of UMass Amherst since 2006 and was director of the University Writing Program from 2007-2011. He holds the Ph.D. in Rhetoric from Carnegie Mellon University (1996), the M.A. in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1989), and the A.B. in English from Davidson College (1983). Fleming's research spans the field of composition-rhetoric; he has published essays on the history of rhetoric, argumentation theory and practice, writing in the disciplines and professions, and the history and pedagogy of first year composition. His book City of Rhetoric: Revitalizing the Public Sphere in Metropolitan America was published by SUNY Press in 2008; another book, From Form to Meaning: Freshman Composition and the Long Sixties, 1957-1974, was published by the University of Pittsburgh Press in 2011. He is currently at work on a third book, about the past, present, and future of the bachelor's degree in U.S. higher education, tentatively titled American Baccalaureate."

"Dr. Henry Sauermann joined the College in 2008. His research focuses on individuals’ motives and incentives, and how they interact with organizational and institutional mechanisms in shaping innovative activity. In particular, he studies how scientists’ motives and incentives relate to important outcomes such as innovative performance in firms, patenting in academia, or career choices and entrepreneurial intentions. This stream of research also explores important differences in these mechanisms across contexts such as industrial versus academic science or startups versus large established firms. In new projects, Dr. Sauermann studies the dynamics of motives and incentives over time, and explores non-traditional innovative institutions such as “Crowd Science” or “Citizen Science” (e.g., https://www.zooniverse.org/). Additional work is underway to gain deeper insights into scientific labor markets and to derive implications for junior scientists, firms, and policy makers."

"Professor Crow is the Interim Dean and Associate Vice-President Graduate. Her research interests are in the social, cultural, political and economic implications of digital technologies. She has edited collections on mobile technologies, US radical feminism, and Canadian Women's Studies. She has worked on a number of large-scale interdisciplinary grants with engineers, designers, artists and communication scholars to produce technical and cultural content for mobile experiences, (MDCN, 2004-2007 and CWIRP, 2006-2008). She is one of the co-founders of the Mobile Media Lab, co-founding editor of wi: a journal of mobile media, and was the president of the Canadian Women's Studies Association (2002-2004). Her most recent SSHRC project is "Senior and Cells" with Professor Kim Sawchuk."

PebbleRoad: Organizing digital information for others
"When we interact with web and intranet teams, we find many struggling to move beyond conceptual-level discussions on information organization. Hours on end are spent on discussing the meaning of "metadata", "controlled vocabulary" and "taxonomy" without any strategic understanding of how everything fits together. Being so bogged down at this level they fail to look beyond to the main reason for their pursuit—organizing information for others (the end users) so that they can find the information easily."
